ArchiveWhen stimulating human acupoints with methods such as acupuncture or electrical pulses, the subjects experience a special sensation of sourness, fullness and numbness, which starts from the stimulated acupoints and can be transmitted along the classical meridian pathways, which is called propagated sensation along the meridian (PSM). From a physiological point of view, its formation must include the whole process of activities from peripheral receptors, afferent nerves and various links of the central nervous system. However, as the PSM is a subjective sensation phenomenon, although a very important means of acupuncture treatment is how to get the goal of “Qi arrival at affected area”, whether PSMcan be stimulated is the key to “Qi arrival at affected area” and it is also the main manifestation of “Qi arrival at affected area” in traditional Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion. At present, it is currently difficult to show it with objective representation. Thus, it affects the clinical application and promotion. With the rapid development of science and technology in China, artificial intelligence (AI) image recognition technology and data analysis provide excellent conditions for the study of meridians in traditional Chinese medicine. This article took this as a starting point, applying AI infrared image recognition technology and data analysis to clarify the objective manifestations of PSM, providing a scientific basis for improving the clinical efficacy and mechanism of action of acupuncture.
The classical formula Qingning Powder (清宁散) was originally documented in Youyou Jicheng by CHEN Fuzheng during the Qing Dynasty. It possesses the effects of clearing lung heat, calming the heart, purging lung fire and relieving cough. Modern research indicates that Qingning Powder exhibits anti-inflammatory and antitussive activities, and it is clinically applicable for treating pediatric lung-heat-induced cough and lung disorders caused by phlegm-heat accumulation and failure of purification and descent of lung. This paper provided a comprehensive review based on medical classics, modern literature and clinical research, covering the formula composition, chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of individual herbs, compound compatibility principles and modern clinical applications. Following the “Five Principles” of quality markers (Q-Markers) in traditional Chinese medicine, the potential Q-Markers for Qingning Powder were predicted and analyzed. The results suggest that geniposidic acid, verbascoside, 6-gingerol, betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, sanggenon B, mulberroside G, poricoic acid A, dehydrotumulosic acid, quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucosyl-7-O-β-D-gentianbioside, sinapic acid glucoside, morusin A and liquiritin may serve as the Q-Markers for Qingning Powder. This study offered a reference for the clinical application, pharmaceutical development and quality standard establishment of the classical formula Qingning Powder.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) eye diagnosis, as one of the quintessences of TCM inspection, holds a significant role in clinical diagnosis. It also enjoys a solid theoretical foundation and a long history of development. The five-wheel and eight-region theories are the most important theories in TCM eye diagnosis. With the trend of TCM diagnosis objectivity, the modernization of TCM eye diagnosis has a strong development momentum. The author traced the evolution of TCM eye diagnosis theory, introduced the current technologies of eye diagnosis, and presented the team's latest research—TCM eye image recognition system. This system integrates TCM foundational eye diagnostic theory of “eight zones and eight acupoints” with detailed indicators from “four forms” and “eight colors” to establish a modern, precise framework for white eye image acquisition, processing and analysis by leveraging modern artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The paper outlined the construction of the eye diagnosis image recognition model, delved into the key technologies of system development, and proposed targeted solutions to existing challenges to promote the objectivity and precision of TCM diagnosis.
Gusuibu (Drynaria fortunei Rhizoma) contains flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, triterpenoids, phenolic acids and glycosides and other chemical components. Studies have shown that Gusuibu (Drynaria fortunei Rhizoma) has various pharmacological benefits, including anti-osteoporosis, accelerating the recovery of bone injury, reducing inflammation, promoting tooth growth, regulating blood lipid levels, preventing toxic ear injury, maintaining renal function, protecting nervous system health and improving cognitive functions. It has great potential and good development prospects. In this paper, the current situation of its quality control was briefly summarized. The 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia uses naringin as the quality index component. At present, the quality control of Gusuibu (Drynaria fortunei Rhizoma) is single and the specificity is poor. Based on the concept of quality marker (Q-Marker) of traditional Chinese medicine, the potential quality markers of Gusuibu (Drynaria fortunei Rhizoma) were predicted and analyzed from eight aspects, including traditional medicinal properties, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, network pharmacology, different producing areas and processing methods, compound compatibility and new pharmacodynamic uses. It is preliminarily speculated that naringin, neoeriocitrin, luteolin, kaempferol, eriodictyol, naringenin, protocatechuic acid, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and caffeic acid 4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside are the main Q-Markers of Gusuibu (Drynaria fortunei Rhizoma), which provides a scientific and reasonable reference for the construction of quality standard evaluation system of Gusuibu (Drynaria fortunei Rhizoma).

This paper summarized the current status of quality control of Huangjing (Rhizoma Polygonati), and predicted the quality markers of Huangjing (Rhizoma Polygonati) from different aspects such as chemical component detectability, component efficacy, processing methods, network pharmacology and new pharmacological uses. In order to provide a scientific basis for the quality control of Huangjing (Rhizoma Polygonati), polygonatum polysaccharides, fructose, DFV, baicalein, dioscin, isorhamnetin, β-sitosterol, kaempferol, rutin, quercetin, liquiritigenin and other components can be considered as the reference for the quality markers of Huangjing (Rhizoma Polygonati).
To investigate the intervention effects of Astragalus polysaccharide on peritoneal fibrosis related to peritoneal dialysis in mice and its possible mechanisms.
Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into a blank control group (Control), a model group (Model), a low-dose group of Astragalus polysaccharide (APS 100 mg/kg) and a high-dose group of Astragalus Polysaccharide (APS 200 mg/kg), with 10 mice in each group. A mouse model of peritoneal fibrosis was established using high-glucose peritoneal dialysis fluid, and the treatment was administered daily for 28 days. After the final treatment, peritoneal function (glucose transport and urea nitrogen levels) was assessed. Hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE) and Masson staining were performed to observe the pathological changes, fibrosis and peritoneal thickness. Western blot analysis was conducted to detect the expressions of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) related proteins in peritoneal tissue. The immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry methods were used to assess the expressions of macrophage polarization-related proteins in peritoneal tissue.
Compared to the Control group, the Model group showed significant increases in peritoneal thickness and collagen fiber deposition, elevated glucose transport and higher urea nitrogen levels. The expressions of EMT-related proteins[α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen Ⅲ, fibronectin)]significantly increased, while E-cadherin protein expression significantly decreased, and M2 macrophage markers[Arginase-1 (Arg-1), CD163]were significantly elevated. In comparison to the Model group, the treatment with Astragalus polysaccharide led to significant improvements in the above indicators, with the high-dose group showing better effects than the low-dose group. After the clearance of macrophages, the inhibitory effect of Astragalus polysaccharide on the peritoneal fibrosis was weakened.
Astragalus polysaccharide inhibits the peritoneal fibrosis in mice by suppressing epithelial-mesenchymal transition and regulating M2 macrophage polarization.
To observe the regulatory mechanism of Yupingfeng Powder (玉屏风散) on “activation of Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) signaling pathway inhibiting fibroblast autophagy in pulmonary fibrosis”, and to explore the mechanism of Yupingfeng Powder in improving idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
Forty-eight Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into 8 groups with 6 rats in each, including blank group, sham-operated group, model group, positive control (prednisone) group, STAT3 inhibitor (sorafenib) group and Yupingfeng Powder high, middle and low dose groups. The rats in the model group and in each administration group were injected with bleomycin (BLM) intratracheally to establish the lung fibrosis model. Gastric administration was started after the 14th day of modeling, and prednisone [6 mg/ (kg·d)]was given to the positive control group, sorafenib[30 mg/ (kg·d)]was given to the STAT3 inhibitor group, and Yupingfeng Powder solution was given to the high dose group[6 g/ (kg·d)], the middle dose group[3 g/ (kg·d)]and the low dose group[1.5 g/ (kg·d)], respectively. The equal volume of saline was given to the blank group and the model group. The drug was continuously administered until the 30th day. The symptoms and signs, the changes in lung tissue morphology, the α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) protein expression, the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway and respective phagocytosis index in lung tissues were observed before and after treatment.
Compared with the blank and sham-operated groups, the model group showed severe symptoms, signs and lung tissue injury status, significantly higher levels of IL-6 andTGF-β1 (P<0.01), significantly higher expressions of α-SMA, JAK2, phosphorylated Janus kinase 2 (p-JAK2), STAT3, phosphorylation signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (p-STAT3) proteins (P<0.01) and myeloid cell leukemia 1 (Mcl-1) protein and mRNA (P<0.01). The protein and mRNA expressions of Beclin1, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase catalytic subunit type 3 (PIK3C3) and Atg14 were significantly reduced (P<0.01), the binding between Beclin1 and Mcl-1 was significantly enhanced, and fibroblast autophagy was significantly reduced. After treatment, compared with those in the model group, all the indexes of the rats in the high and middle dose groups of Yupingfeng Powder, prednisone group and sorafenib group were significantly improved (P<0.01 or P<0.05), the binding between Beclin1 and Mcl-1 was significantly weakened, and the autophagy of fibroblasts was significantly increased, while the indicators of the low dose group basically showed no significant changes. Overall, the efficacy of the high dose group of Yupingfeng Powder was better than that of the middle and low dose groups, and equal to that of the prednisone group and close to that of the sorafenib group.
Yupingfeng Powder is able to reduce collagen fiber deposition by increasing fibroblast autophagy to inhibit pulmonary fibrosis, and this process may be related to the inhibition of the phosphorylation and activation of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway by decreasing the levels of IL-6 and TGF-β1, thus blocking the binding of Mcl-1 to Beclin1, further increasing the formation of type Ⅲ PI3K complex, and enhancing the ability of Beclinl to activate autophagy.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the relationship between the liver and the eyes in the theory of visceral manifestations is one of the important cornerstones of the theory of visceral manifestations, which profoundly reveals the physiological and pathological associations between the liver and the eyes. This paper systematically reviewed the theoretical origin, modern research and clinical application value of this theory. The statement that “the liver governs the eyes” was first recorded in Plain Questions·Treatise on Correspondence Between Yin-Yang and Manifestations ofthe Cosmos. Its physiological basis lies in “the liver opening into the eyes”, “the liver meridian connected to the eye system”, “the liver storing blood to nourish the eyes”, “the smooth flow of liver Qi reaching the eyes” and “the liver being Yin and soft to moisten the eyes”. Modern research has confirmed and expanded its connotation from multiple perspectives: with the “liver-eye biological axis” as the core framework, the liver maintaining the structural and functional homeostasis of the eyeball by regulating the metabolism of key substances such as vitamin A, lipids and sugars, affecting the intraocular pressure, tear secretion, etc. through the neuro-endocrine pathway. In terms of clinical application, the prescriptions based on the principles of soothing liver and strengthening spleen and clearing liver fire have shown significant efficacy in treating eye diseases such as optic atrophy, dry eye syndrome and keratitis. In addition, the external therapies for the eyes, such as acupuncture at the liver meridian acupoints Xingjian (LR2) and Taichong (LR3), have also achieved good results. There are still limitations in current research. For example, the specific neural pathway of the liver meridian-eye system has not been clarified, and the specific molecular pathway by which the abnormal dispersion of liver Qi affects the normal physiological functions of the eyes still needs to be explored. Future research needs to comprehensively and deeply explore the biological mechanism of “the liver governing the eyes” and construct a scientific knowledge system that combines traditional Chinese medicine theory with modern medicine to promote the modern transformation of this classic theory.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a metabolic bone disease characterized by reduced bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue microstructure. With the global aging population, the incidence of OP is progressively increasing. Current Western medical treatments primarily rely on bone-forming agents and bone resorption inhibitors, which often exhibit significant side effects and are unsuitable for long-term use. OP is a condition where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) demonstrates therapeutic advantages, and Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) is a commonly used traditional Chinese herb for treating OP. This article reviewed Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) and its primary active components, such as pinoresinol diglucoside, aucubin and geniposidic acid, focusing on their multi-pathway regulatory mechanisms against OP. Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) and its components promote bone formation by modulating the Wnt/β-catenin and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) /Smad signaling pathways, while inhibiting bone resorption through the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) /receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) /nuclear factor-κB receptor activating factor receptor (RANK) signaling pathways. Additionally, they regulate the coupling of bone formation and resorption by influencing the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) /protein kinase B (AKT) and estrogen signaling pathways. Furthermore, Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) and its components can regulate bone angiogenesis by stimulating the expression of vascular factors in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells via the BMP/Smad pathway or by modulating the secretion of platelet-derived growth factor in osteoclast precursor cells through the mitogenactivated protein kinase (MAPK) /nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) pathway. Moreover, Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) and its components can modulate the polarization state of macrophages, alter the expression of inflammatory factors and improve the bone immune-inflammatory microenvironment, thereby maintaining bone homeostasis. In summary, Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) exerts anti-OP effects through multiple mechanisms and pathways, providing valuable insights and references for its clinical application and development.

Metabolic syndrome and coronary heart disease often coexist, forming complex pathological interactions. Based on the six-meridian syndrome differentiation system from Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, this study explored the synergistic application in etiology, pathogenesis, progression patterns and dynamic therapeutic strategies. From the initial stage of Taiyang disease (exogenous pathogen invasion and disharmony of nutrient-defense systems), Yangming disease (internal heat accumulation and epigastric fullness/pain), Shaoyang disease (impaired pivot mechanism and chest-hypochondrium discomfort), to the advanced stages of Taiyin disease (spleen Yang deficiency with cold-damp obstruction), Shaoyin disease (heart-kidney disharmony and imbalance of water-fire equilibrium) and Jueyin disease (complex deficiency-excess and cold-heat interweaving), this paper proposed a full-cycle treatment strategy encompassing “prevention before disease onset, disease progression control and recurrence prevention post-recovery”. Six-meridian syndrome differentiation precisely captures disease progression trends, balances deficiency-excess and cold-heat patterns and reflects the holistic and personalized advantages of traditional Chinese medicine, offering novel insights for managing complex metabolic cardiovascular diseases.

This paper provided a reference for the optimization of the processing technology and the processing of “syndrome” of Amomum.
To evaluate the effect of Zuogui Wan (左归丸, ZGW) on reducing ovarian toxicity of Tripterygium glycosides (TG) and to explore its attenuated mechanism by proteomic methods.
Thirty-two 2-month-old female SD rats with SPF grade were randomly divided into control (CON) group (10 rats) and model group (22 rats). The model group rats were given continuous intragastatic administration of TG (50 mg·kg-1·d-1) for 2 weeks to construct the ovarian injury model. The rats with successful model (20) were randomly divided into TG group and ZGW group (1.875 g·kg-1·d-1) with 10 rats in each group. The estrus cycle of the rats was measured during continuous gavage for 4 weeks. After gavage, the body weight, ovarian and uterine indexes were measured, and serum sex hormone levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was used to observe the pathological damage of ovarian tissue, and label free quantitative proteomic analysis was performed. Western Blot was used to verify the protein expression of the enrichment pathway.
ZGW could effectively regulate the estrous cycle and sex hormone level of TG-induced female rats, and significantly reduce the production of atretic follicles (P<0.000 1). Proteomics showed that compared with those in the CON group, there were 203 differential proteins in the TG group, and 28 differential proteins were significantly reduced after TG treatment. KEGG enrichment analysis involved signaling pathways such as sphingolipid biosynthesis, glycosaminoglycan degradation, degradation of other glycans and cell apoptosis. Western Blot results showed that ZGW could down-regulate the expressions of Cycs, Parp3, Bax and Caspase-3 and up-regulate the expression of Bcl-2 protein in apoptosis signaling pathway.
ZGW can regulate the apoptosis signaling pathway mediated by Cycs, Parp3, Bax, Caspase-3 and Bcl-2 and plays a role in alleviating the damage of ovarian tissue caused by TG.
To investigate the sensitization effect of traditional Chinese medicine compound Huangjing (Polygonati Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) on the anti-tumor effect of cisplatin (DDP), and further investigate its potential mechanism.
A subcutaneous tumor model of lung cancer in mice was constructed, and Huangjing (Polygonati Rhizoma) -Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (HH), DDP and HH combined DDP (HH+DDP) were administered to observe the changes in tumor volume in mice. Lewis cell lines were cultured in vitro, and the corresponding interventions were applied to detect the cell proliferation activity, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, as well as the changes in mitochondrial membrane potential.
In vitro and in vivo results showed that the HH+DDP group significantly inhibited the growth and proliferation of LLC cell lines compared to the DDP group and HH group. After the intervention in the HH+DDP group, the ratio of apoptotic protein related proteins Bax and Bcl-2 increased, and the expression of Caspase-3 was up-regulated, promoting the apoptosis and inhibiting the tumor cell proliferation. At the same time, it was also found that the HH+DDP group had a significant inhibitory effect on nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) /inhibitor of NF-κB (IκB-α). Flow cytometry revealed higher levels of apoptosis and ROS production in the HH+DDP group. In addition, the HH+DDP group also reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and promoted the apoptosis.
HH combined DDP can significantly enhance its anti-tumor sensitivity and induce apoptosis through mitochondrial related apoptosis pathways, inhibiting tumor cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo.

To research the therapeutic effects of Modified Guishen Wan (归肾丸化裁) on rat model of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by regulating Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) /nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway, particularly its impact on ovarian function, serum hormone levels and inflammatory factor expression.
Forty 8-week-old SPF female SD rats with normal estrous cycle were randomly divided into four groups (n=10) : normal group, model group, Modified Guishen Wan group and positive drug group (metformin). Except for the normal group, the other groups were administered letrozole via gavage for 21 consecutive days to establish the PCOS model. The Modified Guishen Wan group and the positive drug group received the corresponding treatments for 21 days. After the experiment, the estrous cycle, ovarian index, serum sex hormone levels, serum inflammatory factor levels, the mRNA levels of inflammation-related genes in ovarian tissue and protein expression were detected to evaluate the efficacy of the Modified Guishen Wan.
The estrous cycle of the normal group was 3-5 days/cycle. After 21 days of modeling, the estrous cycles of the other groups became disordered, with an average of 5-8 days/cycle, mostly in the interphase or prophase, and some lacked a complete estrous cycle, indicating ovarian damage. After 3 weeks of gavage treatment, the estrous cycles of the positive group and the Modified Guishen Wan group recovered. Compared with that of the normal group, the ovarian index of the model group significantly increased (P<0.01). Compared with that of the model group, the ovarian index of the rats of the Modified Guishen Wan group and the positive drug group significantly decreased (P<0.01), approaching the normal group levels. The ovarian tissue of the model group showed multiple cystic changes, with reduced or absent corpora lutea. In contrast, the Modified Guishen Wan group and the positive drug group had fewer cystic and atretic follicles, and the granulosa cell layer structure tended to be normal. The levels of testosterone (T) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in the model group were significantly higher (P<0.01, P<0.05), while follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were significantly lower (P<0.05). The Modified Guishen Wan group and the positive drug group could significantly reduce the levels of T and LH (P<0.05), and the Modified Guishen Wan group and the positive drug group could also significantly increase the FSH levels (P<0.05). Compared with those of the normal group, the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1 β (IL-1β) in the model group were significantly elevated (P<0.001). Compared with the model group, both the Modified Guishen Wan and the positive drug could significantly reduce the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β in PCOS rats (P<0.01 and P<0.05). Compared with those of the normal group, the mRNA levels of IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α and TLR4 in the ovarian tissue of the model group were significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01). The Modified Guishen Wan group had significantly lower levels of IL-6, IL-1β and TLR4 mRNA compared to the model group (P<0.05), with a trend toward lower TNF-αmRNA levels (P=0.188). Compared with the normal group, the protein expression of TLR4 in the ovarian tissue of the model group was significantly increased (P<0.05), and the phosphorylation levels of NF-κB p65 and IκBα were significantly elevated (P<0.05). The Modified Guishen Wan group had significantly lower TLR4 protein levels (P<0.05) and significantly reduced phosphorylation levels of NF-κB p65 and IκBα (P<0.05).
The Modified Guishen Wan may improve reproductive dysfunction and ovarian inflammation in PCOS rats by inhibiting the activation of the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway and reducing the production of inflammatory factors, providing new insights and theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of PCOS.

However, there are problems with adulteration, excessive nonmedicinal parts and substandard content in Qiancao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma) currently, and the existing quality control indicators make it difficult to evaluate the quality of medicinal materials comprehensively. Based on research progress on quality control of Qiancao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma), its quality markers were predicted and analyzed from 7 aspects such as plant genetic relationship, traditional efficacy, different origins, compatibility of different compounds, new pharmacodynamic pathway and measurable chemical compounds. The results suggested that alizarin, purpurin, 6-hdroxyrubiadin, xnthopurpurin, rbiadin, mollugin, rbioncolin C, xyloidone, lpachol, isolariciresinol, RA-Ⅴ, RA-Ⅶ and β-sitosterol can be used as quality markers of Qiancao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma), providing a reference for its quality standard improvement and other research in the future.
