Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) was first recorded as a top-grade herb in Shennong Bencao Jing. It has abundant germplasm resources and a wide range of cultivation, and has been widely used throughout history. The 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia records that Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) is derived from the dried tubers of Maidong[Ophiopogon japonicus (L.f.) Ker-Gawl.]. It has a sweet, slightly bitter and slightly cold nature. Its meridian tropism is the lung, stomach and heart meridians and it has the effects of nourishing Yin, generating fluids, moistening lung and clearing heart. Modern studies have shown that Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) contains various chemical components such as saponins, high isoflavones, polysaccharides and volatile oil, which have pharmacological effects such as protecting the cardiovascular system, lowering blood sugar, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor and anti-aging, and are clinically used for the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, tumors and other diseases. In this paper, the germplasm resources, planting range, medicinal properties research, modern research and application of Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) in recent years were reviewed.
