Nervous system related diseases are the most common diseases that threaten human life, health and quality of life.“Brain-gut axis” is a two-way interactive pathway between brain and intestine. Intestinal flora affects the occurrence and development of nervous system related diseases through multiple pathways of brain-gut axis, forming a complex network mechanism. This paper discussed the theory of “heart and small intestine being exterior-interiorly related” in traditional Chinese medicine, the key role of intestinal flora in the brain-gut axis and its close correlation with the occurrence and development of nervous system related diseases,so as to provide new ideas for the re-understanding and innovative development of the theory of “heart and small intestine being exterior-interiorly related” in traditional Chinese medicine and the theory of “brain-gut axis” in modern medicine.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, and its pathogenesis is related to endocrine disorders, immune dysfunction and other factors. The patients with psoriasis during pregnancy have obvious improvement or self-healing tendency. Studies show that 55% of patients with psoriasis during pregnancy have improved, and estradiol is the most potent natural estrogen. And an increase in estrogen levels, especially relative to progesterone,is associated with the improvement of psoriasis. As an important hormone regulating substance, estrogen and progesterone have many biological activities, such as regulating endocrine secretion, inhibiting inflammatory reaction and promoting skin repair, which is consistent with the principle of balance between Yin and Yang in the theory of “Yang transforming into Qi,while Yin constituting form”. Yangqi is responsible for dispersing and transforming, while Yin fluid is responsible for nourishing and shaping. According to the theory of “Yang transforming into Qi,while Yin constituting form”,they are interdependent and mutually restrictive, jointly maintaining the life activities. Based on the theory of “Yang transforming into Qi,while Yin constituting form”,the keratinocytes of psoriasis are excessively proliferated, which belongs to the deficiency of Yang transforming, and the Yin forming is too much. Estrogen belongs to Yang, progesterone belongs to Yin,and estrogen and progesterone cooperate to adjust the balance of Yin and Yang, thus improving psoriasis.

Gegen Qinlian Decoction(葛根芩连汤,GQD),a classical formula recorded in the Treatise on Febrile Diseases, possesses the efficacy of relieving the exterior and clearing the interior, ascending the clear and stopping dysentery. Traditionally,it has been primarily used to treat diarrhea or dysentery caused by damp-heat. Given the similarities in pathological mechanisms and primary symptoms between traditional indications of GQD and modern gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases, particularly ulcerative colitis(UC),GQD has been widely used in modern clinical practice to treat such diseases. The research has shown that the mechanism of GQD treating UCinvolves multiple pathways and targets, including regulating immune response, protecting intestinal mucosal barrier, antioxidant stress and inhibiting inflammatory response. The realization of these mechanisms is intricately linked to the sophisticated regulatory network among cytokines. Moreover, the significance of cytokines in the pathogenesis of UChas become increasingly prominent. The imbalance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines leading to immune dysregulation is considered a critical factor influencing the progression and prognosis of UCand has become a focal point of current research. Based on this, this study systematically reviewed the mechanism of Gegen Qinlian Decoction in the treatment of UCfrom the perspective of cytokines, and explored it in depth from pro-inflammatory cytokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines, aiming to provide further theoretical support and reference for the rational clinical application of GQD.
