Nervous system related diseases are the most common diseases that threaten human life，health and quality of life.“Brain-gut axis” is a two-way interactive pathway between brain and intestine. Intestinal flora affects the occurrence and development of nervous system related diseases through multiple pathways of brain-gut axis，forming a complex network mechanism. This paper discussed the theory of “heart and small intestine being exterior-interiorly related” in traditional Chinese medicine，the key role of intestinal flora in the brain-gut axis and its close correlation with the occurrence and development of nervous system related diseases，so as to provide new ideas for the re-understanding and innovative development of the theory of “heart and small intestine being exterior-interiorly related” in traditional Chinese medicine and the theory of “brain-gut axis” in modern medicine.
