The existing problems of current policies on science popularization in China were analyzed; the basic principles and missions of the development of science popularization industry in China were elaborated; proposals on promoting science popularization industry in China were brought up from 9 different aspects, such as: national strategic planning on rising industries, to enlarge the demand on science popularization, to give special support to leading industries or industries with huge potentials.
The evolution of function in public museum education had been closely related to social environments which museums had rooted in and experienced from consciousness to social consensus. It was appropriate to analyze the factors of museum development under contemporary social backgrounds. The performance of museum education accompanied by museum development, it was cultivated and promoted during the process, and shifted from focusing on objects to human and society. The museum practices on education had well synchronized with the requirements of society. Furthermore, museums could make adjustments to achieve its development.
To build up a better risk governance system in China, participation of various social groups are needed. Scientists are considered as the most trustworthy professional groups in China. Their participation in risk governance is very important. However, in China nowadays, the level of scientists' participation in risk governance is very low. The intervention from government, the misrepresentation from the media, and the lack of initiatives are the main hindrances. More active measures should be taken by the government and the society to promote the scientists' participation in risk governance.
Farmers' knowledge of climate change affects greenhouse gas emission and popular science propaganda of climate change. Based on the statistic data and information from investigation in Wei River Basin, farmers' cognition to climate change was analyzed and suggestions were proposed as the following: (1) The popularization of climate change knowledge were mainly done by television and mobile phones; (2) Supervision for responsibility of enterprise on energy conservation and emissions reduction and guide public low carbon life by media need to be further strengthened.
Ren Hong-jun was one of the principal founders and leaders of the Science Society of China and had long been in charge of the journal Science (Ke Xue). In August, 2002, the impressive book The Ideal of a Patriotic Scientist——Collected Works of Ren Hong-jun, with 800 thousand words, was published. Today, as reading it once again, I am even more deeply moved and have the greatest esteem for the founders of the Science Society of China. In the present paper, five topics as follows are reviewed: (1) To be aware of what science is, (2) To understand the method of science, (3) To comprehend the spirit of science, (4) To take science as a national policy, and (5) To expound science and education, in order to interpret the tremendous efforts of Ren Hong-jun and his colleagues who worked on arousing the awareness about science in Chinese people, as well as to congratulate the Science Society of China on its hundredth birthday.
The events of heavy metal contamination occur frequently in recent years, so the needs of public science popularization for the prevention of heavy metal pollution have increased significantly. To strengthen the science popularization for the prevention of heavy metal pollution is a very important significance for protecting the ecological environment and building a beautiful and harmonious China. Through the investigation and analysis for the current situation in four districts of Tianjin, this report gains the basic information of the status of Tianjin public science popularization needs for the prevention of heavy metal pollution, analyzes the causes and summarizes the corresponding measures. It has a certain reference value for the future science popularization.
In the field of science communication, social media have played an increasingly important role in communicating controversies. A three-layer analysis framework including the subject, contents and strategies was set up to explore the media framing of Genetically Modified (GM) food, one of the most controversial issues so far, in the world's largest video-sharing site YouTube. The most viewed 20 videos are selected as research samples. Based on an analysis of these sample videos, this study tries to describe the performances of the four players government, science community, business sector and nongovernmental organizations in the process of media framing. The study explored seven categories/seventeen sub-fields, and summarized three main framing strategies. Advices based on conclusions drew from this study are provided for the future related research.
The level of public scientific literacy has a great impact upon a nation's human resource. In order to maintain its science and technology preeminent position and competitiveness in the world, President Barack Obama of the U.S implements The Federal Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education 5-year Strategic Plan. How to improve STEM instruction, increase and sustain youth and public engagement in STEM, enhance STEM experience of undergraduate students, better serve groups historically underrepresented in STEM fields, design graduate education for tomorrow's STEM workforce, and build new models for leveraging assets and expertise, build and use evidence-based approaches are detailed in the plan. CoSTEM focuses on the national competitiveness use the strategic plan, and insists that the progress on STEM is critical to building a just and inclusive society.
In the sense of democracy, it is taxpayers' money that fund Chinese scientific and technological research and development; scientists must do science communication to the public. From the views of the professionalization of science, the ethos of science and responding to risk society, this article explores the relationship between scientists participating science popularization and their responsibility to taxpayers. By investigating the situation of Chinese scientists participating science popularization, it has found that most of them have realized the importance and meaning of science popularization, but lacked an understanding of their responsibility to taxpayers. The ways and forms in which Chinese scientists take part in science popularization have been becoming more diversified. But they are not eager to participate in science popularization, because it is not a part of the evaluations of Chinese scientists. Based on the study, some suggestions have been proposed to cultivate scientists' responsibility to taxpayers and build a mechanic of science popularization evaluation and improve public engagement.
