Employing content analysis, this study examined the public discussions of global warming on online forums from 2012 to 2017 in China, investigating the ways of discussion as well as discourse quality. The purpose of the study is to better understand whether and how public participation in discussing controversial scientific issues can facilitate public understanding science, helping our society in communicating controversial scientific issues as well as enhancing public engagement in science in China.
Public Engagement is a key element to realize people-oriented, the central philosophy of modern museum. Multiple forms of public engagement narrowed the gap between the museum and the public. However, these forms usually fails to raise the public's generate interest in certain area and cannot continuly improve the relationship between the public and the museum. Fossil Hunters, a public activity conducted by Yunnan Provincial Museum worked as a sample in this paper in order to discuss a new model of public engagement in museum, that is, to explore, love and share. The relationship between the museum and the public should be equal. The museum, as a platform, helps the public find and develop their interests in the process of engagement. In this process, some brilliant people could become a member of the museumand shows themselves on this platform. The museum and public developed a win-win model. In this way, the public could become a truepart of the museum.
Given the fact that the teaching quality of the school is relatively weak and the students are usually afraid of the chemical learning to come, in order to eliminate the students' fear of learning chemical knowledge and enhance their enthusiasm for studying, the research group has innovatively explored the ways of compiling chemical popular science textbooks and carrying out popular science activities in summer camp based on the scenes of A Dream of Red Mansions. This paper applied the form of character dialogue to draw out relevant chemical knowledge, and design interesting chemical experiments to attract students to participate effectively. The practice shows that embedding scientific knowledge into students' relatively familiar scenes helps eliminate students' worries and fears about scientific knowledge learning, raise students' interest and enthusiasm in learning, and is of great value to carry out STEM education as well as to improve scientific literacy. This paper introduces the design idea and implementation process of “Beautiful Chemistry in A Dream of Red Mansions” science popularization summer camp, and analyzed the effect of this activities.
This paper investigated the status of science popularization (S-P) by scientific and technical worker. The results show that they have a positive attitude and strong sense of responsibility towards S-P, but their frequencies of participation in S-P activities are not high, and there exist a phenomenon of contrasts between their thoughts and practice. The main influencing factors leading to this phenomenon include their time, energy, funds as well as lack of assessment. Meantime the responsibility of science popularization and the sense of self-worth are both the important driving forces. They pay more attention to broadcast science spirit and scientific rationality, and believe that they should enhance S-P ability, and establish a multi-party mechanism to promote S-P. This paper suggest: Perfecting the evaluation and reward system of scientific and technological projects, scientific and educational units as well as their workers; broadening the channels for carrying out S-P, as promoting the S-P work on new media, self-Media and informatization; Focusing on the content of S-P, vigorously propagating scientific spirit and enhancing public's rationality on scientific issues; Eestablishing professional voluntary S-P organizations in scientific research institutes and universities, focusing on positive guidance and incentives, and cooperating in many ways to form a joint force for S-P; Complete the emergency mechanism of S-P and improve the S-P capacity of scientific and technological workers.
Based on the general directory of 123 science popularization enterprises in Beijing that was confirmed in preliminary studies, this research conducted a sampling survey to further understand the status of science popularization industry in Beijing. By employing proportionate stratified sampling method, this paper conducted questionnaire survey and quantitative analysis to 20 samples concerning several fundamental dimensions of enterprises such as property, fund, employment, service categories and so forth. At the same time, the research was combined with field research and in-depth interviews to reveal the developmental status and difficulties of Beijing's popular science enterprises as well as making corresponding policy recommendations.
The ethical issues arising from the “Body Worlds” have attracted the keen attention of the academic circles. To address this issue, this study investigated dark motivations to the Chengdu Mystery Life Museum, and examines the relationships between dark motivations and demographic information of survey respondents. Survey data collected from 247 domestic visitors suggested that respondents were primarily motivated by their interests in biosciences and mysteries of life. The factor analysis was employed to draw out the underlying dimensions of fourteen motivation attributes explained by the three-factor solution: Knowledge, Friends and Relatives, Ego and Meaning of Life, and Curiosity. The empirical evidence suggested an interrelated pattern between dark motivations and demographic information such as revisit intention, frequency of visits and duration of stay. This study also implies that the Body World plays an contested role in modern Chinese society, particularly better play the educational function of similar exhibitions, so as to provide reference for black tourism market segmentation.
The phenomenon of superstition about health refers that people believe some non-science aspects in their health behaviors. These behaviors would harm believers' physical and mental health. This paper analysis the reasons of this phenomenon's prevalence from some aspects, including the health requirements, dilemma of medical science development, science literacy, social culture, false advertisement, industrial governance and professional frauds. Then, it discusses the current status and inducement of the phenomenon of health from three aspects, including the believers' psychological characteristics, group features, and regional characteristics. Finally, some suggestions were presented.
Cartoon short video of science popularization is a new form of science popularization that developed with the rapid growing of mobile Internet. Such videos are often accompanied by a large amount of entertainment and fragmented information. Based on the theory of seductive details effect, this paper analyzed the relevance between the seductive details and science popularization goal, as well as the effect of situational interest (high or low) triggered by seductive details on the achievement of popular science goals. The research suggested that the low-relevance seduction details were beneficial to the achievement of science popularization goals. Situational interest plays a mediating role, which can improve the audience's memory capacity and learning motivation.
Tasks of popularizing scientific knowledge, promoting scientific methods, promoting the scientific thoughts, fully stimulating the whole public's creativity and enthusiasm of the innovation are all important for the era development. During the era of picture-reading in the new media environment, however, there are very rare people could have patience to finish reading information from long text. Employing the graphic ways, the science information graphics popularize the complicated contents and abstract scientific clearly and directly, and help them accepted by the public, While let the brain enjoy the relaxing reading experience, this method aims to appeal the attention of the public in order to help the knowledge be more widely shared and communicated, so as to improve the effect of the science popularization.
Taking more than 2000 “risk communication” research papers included Chinese journal databases and WOS as the statistical sources, this paper studied the main research points and research characteristics in risk communication research field by using SPSS and UCINET to carry out a multidimensional scaling analysis and social network analysis. By comparing with western research, this study pointed out the limitations of current research in China: overlooking the public opinion and normal risk. Unbalanced social structure might be the most relevant reason.
