ArchiveScience popularization industry is a collection of all kinds of operating entities, which provides resources, products and services for the science popularization system. This study analyzes the dominant formats related to science and technology communication abroad. Based on statistical data and a survey by the research team, this paper gives a brief overview of the new development trend of the science popularization industry in China, and summarizes the problems in China's policy, institutional mechanism and market demand during the development of science popularization industry, and puts forward suggestions for the further development of China's science popularization industry.
In order to excavate the core content and its problems of science popularization policy, ROSTCM, a kind of word frequency analysis software, is used to extract keywords, and co-word matrix of keywords and correlation and dissimilarity matrix are constructed; then Ucinet and SPSS are used to make cluster analysis, multi-dimensional scaling analysis and social network analysis of these keywords. In cluster analysis, the keywords of the popular science policy content are classified into 8 classes, which is respectively conducting training for youngsters and peasants, popular science resource sharing, infrastructure and fund input, etc. It shows that popular science policy covers a wide range of topics. In multidimensional scaling, popular science policy content is classified into 4 classes words, content of science popularization policy possess distinct focus points. By analyzing the keywords of the popular science policy content in network density, the study shows that there exist flaws in the content design of those policies. In a nutshell, the paper puts forward some suggestions which strengthen the hierarchy of policy content, and make policy content be more systematically conducted, etc.
By analyzing 6870 samples, online and offline questionnaires were utilized to investigate the access to popular science knowledge by different audiences in the Yangtze River Delta region. The questionnaire covered 5 categories of audience——the juveniles, peasants, urban workers, community residents, leading cadres or officials, and public civil servants. Some suggestions were put forward in the paper, to improve the scientific transmission mode for innovating the method of science communication from the public's perspective, to improve the efficiency of public access to the popular science knowledge, and to improve the accuracy and coverage of popular science dissemination through the precisely and comprehensively-targeted means of science popularization, the abovementioned measures contributed to providing references for the government to improve the popular science work.
This paper introduces the Google Analytics statistical analysis tools into the research of science popularization micro-videos and illustrates how to use it. Using Google Analytics web analytics, the paper comprehensively analyzed the audiences, traffic sources and webpage content of the “Beautiful Chemistry” website. Based on the data of Alexa, the paper quantitatively analyzed the transmission paths and audience behaviors of the science popularization micro-videos of “Beautiful Chemistry”. It was found that those with a mixture of science and art had more transmission paths and deeper communication, broadening the communication channels of science popularization micro-videos. According to the communication effects of the content, it was revealed that the micro-photography provided a new expression for the effective communication of science popularization micro-videos.
Science competition is an important part of science education. This paper followed up 70 finalists of International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) from 2003—2013. The research team sent questionnaires to the targeted students through e-mails with 70 valid questionnaires obtained finally, the purpose of such move was designed to address the following issues: obtain the information of their future learning and work, and the major which they want to learn during different periods, etc. The results show that most of finalists are male, more projects belong to engineering subjects, computer science subjects and environments subjects, finalists show high enthusiasm in the learning, and 85% of finalists select STEM field as their major, and high school is the best period to encourage students to pursue science as their major. Finally, the paper puts forward some suggestions for cultivating young scientists.
Chinese ancient literary works contain a large number of scientific and technological factors, including the observation and recording of astronomy and geography at that time, the understanding and thinking of natural changes, the generalization and description of technological processes, and the imagination and prediction of the mysterious future. Through the study of ancient myths and legends, folk ballads, novels and operas of these four types of popular literary works, which contains the analysis of the specific technological content and function of science education, it helps to enhance the interest and effectiveness in the popularization of science and technology, and to gain a new understanding of the value of the ancient Chinese literary works.
Promoting the combination of scientific research and science popularization, encouraging and guiding scientists to participate in science popularization, especially in popular science writing, is one of the initiatives in the field of science communication in China. Based on questionnaire survey and panel interviews, this research tries to analyze the current situation of scientists' engagement in popular science writing, their problems and requirements. According to the investigation, Chinese scientists widely believe that it is their responsibilities to participate in popular science writing and they show strong willingness to that. However, they don't actively engage in popular science writing accordingly, and even if involved in it, the form is quite traditional. Interest and social responsibility act as the main motivation for them to participate in popular science writing. The lack of time and energy, imperfect assessment and incentive mechanism are the main obstacles. And on the demand side, the scientists expect a better policy environment and incentives, as well as the corresponding training and services. Based on the aforementioned research, the paper puts forward relevant countermeasures and suggestions on inspiring scientists to participate in popular science writing.
Low-carbon popular science education serves as an important way to build a low-carbon and sustainable society engaged by the public. The paper explores the current situation, the daily low-carbon behaviors and the expectations about the low-carbon popular science education of primary and middle school students in counties of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The results found in the paper reveal that: Firstly, due to a lack of the low-carbon popular science education in counties, the students rarely take part in the low-carbon popular science education. The students in primary and middle schools don't understand most of the low-carbon vocabulary. The low-carbon popular science education is mostly carried out in schools and networks. The most popular ways of the low-carbon popular science education are teachers' lecturing and reference books reading, while the least popular way is visiting the low-carbon popular science education venues. The most impeding factors for low-carbon popular science education are that there no activities about popular science and that the students are burdened with busy and heavy study tasks and homework. Secondly, the judgment of the low-carbon behaviors of primary school students is not high. The low-carbon behavior of junior high school students is better than that of the primary school students. The low-carbon behavior of high school students is the best among them. Thirdly, the students in primary and middle schools expect that low-carbon popular science education should be conducted more frequently. The most expected ways are the popular science games and the visits to the popular science venues. The countermeasures and suggestions of low-carbon popular science education in counties have been proposed in the last part, which provides the empirical evidence and reference to the low-carbon popular science education conducted in the counties.
Featured with immersive experience, Dome theater is a multi-purposefacility for science education and has been becoming the main type theaters in the science museums in China. Through summarizing the origin and development of the dome theater, it is obvious that digital dome theater embodies the dual function of films releasing and science education on astronomy. The data of dome theaters in science museums between China and the United States are comparatively studied in the paper, including quantities, sizes, shows, educational activities and amount of audiences. The findings in the research reveal that albeit the scale of big dome theaters in China is largely the same as that of the U.S., the amount of audiences and popularity are less and lower. The main reasons contain three aspects. Firstly, the function and orientation of Chinese dome theater is oversimplified which results in lacking educational activities. Secondly, the production of films and shows is insufficient and the price of rent is high. Thirdly, the formats of dome system are not standardized which brings about the difficulty in film releasing on different dome theaters. In order to have the current situation changed, it calls for three aspects to be promoted accordingly. The advice to dome manager is that astronomy education and the real-time show is the key point for dome activity and film production. The suggestion to the related department is to formulate standardized guidance.
With a long history in Scientific communication, “Science and Society” is an important part of the British government's technological innovation policy. The government views Science and Society as a necessary condition for British and global success. The background, policy making and development process, specific content and measures, the latest progress and the new development of the Science and Society Programme of UK in the past 10 years are systematically analyzed. The study finds that the British government plays a leading and “catalyst” role in the development of the programme. In order to maintain the policy's effectiveness, efforts shall be made to make the policy content be embodied and targeted, to adequately engage experts in wider organizations and relevant fields during the entire process of policy formulation, implementation and evaluation, to interact with the public, to maintain coordination among relevant social organizations, to follow up on the implementation of policies, to conduct timely experience summary, and to carry out policy revision.
Biographies of scientists of modern China are encountering multiple dilemmas largely due to the conflicts between realities and dramas of biographical literature, the differences between natural science and humanities and social science, and the checks and balances of scientific popularization, historical research, ideological propaganda and the like. This paper analyzes the afore-mentioned multiple dilemmas. Biographies of scientists of modern China can combine science with drama, history and literature only when scientists and biography authors have good cooperation. Researchers of history of science and technology bear important responsibility in this process. Moreover, the development and improvement of biographies of scientists of modern China hinges on the enhancement of scientific literacy of all citizens in China.
During the period of the Republic of China, the country suffered a difficult time, and the people were lacking knowledge about health, therefore, a great number of periodicals came to the forefront to assume responsibility for disseminating knowledge about infectious diseases to the public in a wider scope, such as the knowledge of pathogenesis, infectionroute, symptom, therapies, and the prevention methods. The popularization activities contributed to enhancing public's awareness in the prevention, promoting the progress in national public health, and bringing hope and confidence to the infectious.
As the largest conference in the field of science communication, the 15th annual conference of Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) was held in Dunedin, New Zealand during April 3-6, 2018. The conference gathered global researchers and practitioners from the field of science communication, even scientists to discuss topics with wide concern, some of which are new emerging topics. Hence, it represented research trend of science communication. The title of the conference, entitled “Science, Stories and Society takes us to the core of the worldwide science communication endeavor”, is composed of 3 sub-thesis. The conference collected 344 proposals from 44 countries, including 12 proposals from research institutions or universities in China. Among them, authors of 6 proposals from China participated in report and discussion in the conference. In order to keep abreast of new trend of science communication at home and abroad, the paper analyzed proposal distribution of different sub-topics, most popular sub-thesis, and the topic and content of Chinese proposals.
