This paper provides a detailed interpretation of the seven main parts of the Guidelines on Popular Science Creation for Scientific and Technical Professionals, explaining the core concepts and orientation behind each part. It also interprets the formulation logic of the Exemplary Works on Popular Science Creation for Scientific and Technical Professionals, guiding scientific and technical professionals to better understand the reference value of such works.
Closely following the Guidelines on Popular Science Creation for Scientific and Technical Professionals issued by the General Office of the China Association for Science and Technology, and drawing on the science popularization work carried out by the China Anti-Cancer Association in recent years, this paper focuses on the book Hello, Stomach! as a case study from the Exemplary Works on Popular Science Creation for Scientific and Technical Professionals, with an emphasis on reviewing and elaborating the book's creative process. The production process of this best-selling popular science book is highly consistent with the audience-targeting strategies, the basic principles of "scientificity and authenticity, readability and accessibility, and insightfulness and significance, "as well as the systematic creation concept for popular science books proposed by the Guidelines. The Guidelines also provide a powerful lever for the China Anti-Cancer Association to carry out its future science popularization work.
Taking the original marine scientific research picture book series "Into the Deep Sea" as a case study, this paper examines the practical pathway for transforming marine scientific research resources into popular science picture books. This pathway includes a complete chain of steps:drawing on first-hand scientific expedition experiences, content selection and reconstruction, innovation in expression, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Based on this analysis, the paper distills the key lessons learned from this transformation process. Drawing on the Guidelines on Popular Science Creation for Scientific and Technical Professionals, it proposes several insights for future creation, such as adhering to scientific authenticity, deepening audience segmentation, and embracing human-machine collaboration. These insights aim to provide guidance and reference for more scientific and technical professionals engaged in popular science creation, as well as for the transformation of marine scientific research resources into high-quality popular science works.
The release of the Guidelines on Popular Science Creation for Scientific and Technical Professionals marks an important step as China's fourth scientific enlightenment enters a new stage. Based on the author's long-term practical experience in science popularization, this paper summarizes the "four key levers" for science popularization and analyzes their complementarity with the Guidelines in terms of audience targeting, topic orientation, and forms of expression. In light of the new challenges facing science popularization in the era of artificial intelligence, this paper also analyzes the future direction of the "four key levers":knowledge transmission may no longer be the core focus; rather, scientific methods, critical thinking, and the integration of science and the humanities will constitute the central mission of science popularization in the age of artificial intelligence(AI).
Using Interaction Ritual Chain theory as an analytical framework, this study examines the dual interaction ritual structures and their synergistic mechanisms involved in the production and dissemination of health science knowledge, taking the Bilibili account "Dawu Shiye" as a case study. Based on purposive sampling, the study selects the ten most-viewed health science videos from the account and conducts a statistical analysis of on-screen participants, video content, and danmu (bullet comments). The research identifies two dimensions:interaction rituals among science communicators, and interaction rituals between communicators and users. The findings reveal a synergistic relationship between the two: the former builds a science communication community through the co-presence and interaction between the creator "Dawu" and multidisciplinary physicians; the latter relies on danmu as a core medium to facilitate user feedback and practical knowledge application. Together, these dual interaction rituals form a closed loop of "knowledge production, dissemination, feedback, and optimization." This mechanism not only ensures the authority and scientific rigor of health science content, but also enhances user participation and emotional stickiness.
The "Top-tier Journals Interview" column converts the breakthrough research published by Chinese scientists in top-tier international journals into public-oriented science explainer videos and illustrated articles for dissemination across various platforms. Taking this column as a case study, this paper examines the core challenges and practical pathways for popularizing cutting-edge scientific and technological achievements. Specifically, it addresses a triad of key challenges for translating research from premier journals into popular science: the complexity of knowledge transformation, high audience cognitive barriers, and fragmented communication channels. The the practice of this column pioneers an innovative "scientific producer-director" mechanism, employing emotionally resonant storytelling, optimized information density and pacing, multimodal audiovisual language, and differentiated dissemination strategies. This approach effectively synthesizes scientific rigor with communicative effectiveness, providing a potential reference model for advanced science communication content creation.
With the advent of the nationwide reading era, book resources are becoming increasingly abundant, with both variety and content growing exponentially, presenting readers with ever-expanding choices. As a major category, popular science books have garnered widespread attention. Public libraries, as key institutions for reading promotion services, ought to shoulder the responsibility of recommending high-quality books to the public. Focusing on the "City of Readers"—a long-standing book selection initiative organized by the Capital Library of China—this paper systematically reviews the selection and promotion of popular science books. It summarizes the characteristics of the nominated works, analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the initiative, and evaluates reader feedback. Furthermore, it proposes optimization strategies for future reading promotion activities, including the construction of a comprehensive evaluation system and the creation of a "multi-dimensional" popular science ecosystem within libraries. These insights aim to provide reference for the promotion of science reading and the development of the popular science publishing sector in this new era.
Agricultural science live streaming has emerged as a new practical form of "popularizing scientific and technological resources" in China's agricultural modernization process, serving as an integrated platform for the agricultural tech-extension system. The live streaming practice of the agricultural science journal New Rural Technology demonstrates how a "composite scenario" condenses into novel "composite knowledge," which subsequently acts as a crucial driver influencing the development of "composite relationships," ultimately impacting the generation and transformation of agricultural science popularization productivity. These three elements—scenario, knowledge, and relationship—constitute the fundamental components of agricultural science live streaming. Based on this framework, the study proposes three recommendations: first, establishing a dual-site live streaming scenario to generate knowledge circulation; second, cultivating "knowledge brokers" to facilitate knowledge translation and online interaction via danmu (bullet comments); third, compliantly labeling supply-and-demand information during broadcasts and tracking subsequent supply chain linkages. These strategies offer practical guidance for transforming agricultural scientific achievements and delivering tangible benefits to farmers.
The series of health popularization videos, notably the "Domineering CEO" short dramas produced by the Shenzhen Health Commission, stands as a benchmark practice for government new media in applying entertainment-education (E-E) strategies within the field of health communication. This practical innovation is manifested in three dimensions. Formally, it shapes the archetypal character of the "Domineering CEO"; content-wise, it deconstructs the narrative tropes and dramatic tension typical of the genre; communicatively, authentic performances by medical professionals create highly engaging content for the audience. From a mechanistic perspective, these works comprehensively leverage narrative transportation—achieved through subverted tropes and knowledge embedding—along with character identification fostered by the empathetic connection with doctors' "wage-earner" personas. By precisely tapping into the entertainment mindset of young demographics, this approach effectively enhances the dissemination of health knowledge, offering a valuable reference for the transformative exploration of other institutions.
Shanghai has a century-long tradition in popular science media. Through the practices of generations of filmmakers, guided by the core principle of "science as the core, art as the medium, technology as the tool, and culture as the soul," a systematic creative methodology and distinctive aesthetic characteristics have gradually taken shape, providing a practical foundation for the construction of an academic school. The establishment of this school holds both practical significance and academic value for advancing China's science communication discourse and enhancing the cultural subjectivity of popular science films.
