Firstly, this paper discovers the functions of the universities’ Association for Science and Technology in promoting innovation in science popularization. By analyzing the case of Associations for S&T in Chongqing University for many years, some urgent problems have been put forward. Finally, a new viewpoint, that science needs science popularization, meanwhile science popularization must be scientific, has also been brought forward for discussion.
This article studies the mission of China’s science popularization from the historical perspective. Through inspecting the history of science popularization and the background of science and technology, we may know that the science popularization is adapted to the development phase of contemporary science and technology, moreover, it is connected with the destiny of science and technology. In technology times, the new characteristics of science and technology make the science popularization have new changes. After analyzing the background of science, technology and culture in contemporary China, the article proposes the mission of China’s science popularization in technology times.
Hawking Phenomenon, named after Stephen W. Hawking, is a cultural phenomenon of public science. It has become a current focus in the field of research, publication, the public as well as media. Based on the relevant literature and sufficient survey, the authors of this article attempt to analyze causes of Hawking Phenomenon and decipher implicitly cultural contents of public science in Hawking Phenomenon.
Science popularization is related to the overall development of the social economy. So further intensify the popularization of science, enhance the scientific literacy and cultural quality of community residents is a common task of the entire society. Through survey of awareness and satisfaction of scientific activities for community residents, we understand the attitudes and requests of residents for science and find out effective ways which is very necessary to promote the future development of science popularization.
Nowadays, in our country Internet serves mainly the urban inhabitants and has less relation with agriculture, countryside and farmers. The number of Internet penetration ratio in our countryside is only 1/6 of that in the cities, the problem is much more serious in the countryside of west China. Economic condition, educational level and technique barrier bring the obstacles between audiences in the countryside and information concerning farming on the Internet. The development of internet in our western countryside needs a certain transform, that is, Internet should be adapted to the countryside, the cost of using internet ought to be cut down and the method of using it must be much simplified. At present, the most important thing is that measures should be taken to make more farmers get in touch with the information on Internet. To meet the very urgent need of agricultural information, we can combine the actual circumstance of the economy and culture development of different places, and adopt various receiving modes of Internet agriculture information.
Based on qualitative & quantitative research methods, this article attempts to find out the farmers’ preference for TV programs, willingness of and demands for information service, thus, to provide the first-hand data for exploring the role of TV communication in New Rural Construction. The research shows: farmers like watching TV news, TV film and weather forecast best; communicating “cultural information” by TV has a significant influence on the farmers’ ideology change, rural civilization construction, etc. This paper puts forward: although TV is the major channel of acquiring information for farmers, TV isn’t everything, the function of TV program communication in serving rural areas should be envisaged; one-way TV information service mode can’t satisfy the farmers’ scientific technical information demand. The research suggests using the communication advantage of TV itself, bringing the role and orientation of TV information communication into play adequately, for improving rural people’s humanity quality and basic natural scientific literacy.
Having studied and compared the history of development, the function and management, as well as the sustainable development of the museums in China and in UK, the paper finds out the differences and gaps between the two countries’ museums, thus guiding the development of China's museums of science and technology by learning from the successful experiences of the UK museums and drawing lessons from their mistakes.
The permanent exhibitions of Science and Technology Museum are major content of its exhibition and education, they are also the most important style for the public to take the informal science education. Whether the Science and attracts the public or not and if its exhibitions produce good effect on science education will mainly depend on its permanent exhibitions. How do we know that? Evaluation is the right way. We can learn a lot of information through evaluating, which includes: what do the public like? The deficiencies might exist in the exhibitions. If the display is scientific? If the audience content with the environment, and so on. Such information is essential for the manager to improve management level and enhance the effects of science popularization and education. Thus the author explored the evaluation model of permanent exhibitions of STM from different angles and evaluated some STMs in China. This article concerns some aspects of their research.
Depending on the innovative conceptions about having a lot of science popularization resources and others, the basic peculiarities of the engineering and technology museums in the enterprises were discussed in this paper, as well as the two difficult points of their construction, they are: lack of persons with ability of science popularization and the scientific originality, normative facture of these articles and items of exhibition. The measures and countermeasures were put forward by means of three modes: linking industrial experts with science popularization scholars, once programming but actualizing in stages, taking measures suited to local conditions. At the same time, the plan, design and facture of articles of exhibition and items on display were also discussed, as well as the relation between the museum; and the “tour of industrial science popularization”.
The objective of the present paper is an attempt to measure the public understanding of science in the area of health and hygiene and test the efficacy of “cultural distance model”. A pre-tested open-ended questionnaire was used for administering cross-sectional surveys at a religio-cultural festival in India. 3484 individuals were interviewed and responses were coded and entered to construct computer database. The data was used for determining the cultural distance of five scientific concepts from the quotidian life of the target population. In developing countries, the formal system of modern education operates as a strong determinant in shaping cultural structures of thoughts prevalent among the citizens. There exists a cultural distance between the scientific structure of configuring natural occurrences and peoples' complexity of thoughts. The distance varies significantly across the concepts that were subjected to the inspection and is a function of the nature of scientific information.
From 1860s to 1890s, China experienced a period called westernization movement. In this period, the knowledge of modern times’ science and technology was gradually passed into China and accepted by the Chinese. The Englishman John Fryer had a great contribution to the spreading and popularizing the knowledge of western science and technology in the late years of Qing Dynasty. He established the journal Chinese Scientific Magazine in 1876, which was the earliest journal of popular science in the modern times of China. It introduced the western science and technology by special content and founded a base for the knowledge popularizing in China. This paper introduces Fryer and Chinese Scienctific Magazine from the aspect of science popularization, analyzes and comments on the situation of science popularization in the late years of Qing Dynasty.
In 1975, 186 American leading scientists, including 18 Nobel Prize winners, published a manifesto against astrology, accusing it as a pseudoscientific superstition. Through this and other relative case studies, the author argues that in the practice of science communication, it is necessary to make use of academic progress in science studies which included philosophy, history and society of science in order to avoid negative impacts on science communication from oversimplified and outdated viewpoints of science and naive science communication should be replaced by reflexive one.
