    From the perspective of modern science popularization's characteristics, properties and future tendency, this paper gives a deep discussion and thinking about some points in the research of science popularization history in China on the basis of previous studies, and in this way the author tries to survey the research of science popularization history in China.

    This paper is based on the investigation into the attitudes towards science of graduate students of Science & Engineering in China Academy of Sciences. The questions are science-oriented concerning natural perception, philosophy of science, philosophy of technology, sociology of science, ethic of technology and STS. The statistics shows, the students’ perception of science is incorrect and inappropriate. Although they generally support scienticism, there’s evident deficiency in their humanistic literacy of science research and the application of its results. The deficiency can also be found among the public and the practitioners of S&T through analyzing our national scientific education. To change this situation, certain measures should be adopted to improve the contents and ways of science communication in order to help the students to set up proper perception of science.

    In this paper the author identifies four significant waves of Taiwan’s popular science movement, starting from 1970, all through print publications. However, these four waves seems unable to deliver long-lasting results. Pseudo-science is still widely perceived as facts. The author then argues that it is necessary to set the top priorities for science publishing, in the hope of further improving popular science movement.

    These four waves are marked by various publishing events. The first wave was made by "Science Monthly," founded in 1970, pioneering "Explaining Scientific Knowledge in Chinese". The second wave was brought by the Chinese edition of "Newton Magazine" in 1983, introducing "The New Era of Illustrated Science Magazine". The third wave arose in 1991, when Commonwealth Publishing Company launched its popular science list, "Science Culture", and started the dialogues between science and humanities communities in Taiwan. The fourth wave emerged from 1998 till now, and during this period, about a dozen of publishing houses established their popular science lists, and two popular science magazines were launched: "Scientific People" (the Complex Chinese Edition of Scientific American) and "Science Development Monthly" (sponsored by National Science Council).

    Although every decade a wave would exhibit some effects, altogether they failed to create continued scientific enlightenment as expected. Pseudo-science is still prevailing in Taiwan and the following concerning science publishing would require our immediate attention:

    1. Re-target the audience: Aiming at high school students and adjusting the level of knowledge conveyed in the publications accordingly.

    2. Choose the right media to work with.

    3. Uphold fundamental scientific views: Do not publicize the pseudo-science.

    4. Place emphasis on translation and writing techniques.

    5. Apply publishing expertise: Production, printing, sales and marketing, logistics and finance are all critical to publishing operation.

    6. Encourage active participation of university presses: University presses are easy access to academic resources and communities.

    The paper reviews the way European citizens perceive science and technology (S&T) today, as reflected by a public opinion survey conducted in 32 European countries in 2005. It also includes some comparison with similar surveys conducted recently in the US and in China. Against this background, the paper addresses the challenges and difficulties of science communication in Europe today. Recent initiatives have been taken by the European Commission (EC) in improving communication in general and science communication in particular. The EC's Directorate-General for Research is actively involved in communicating the results of EU-funded research to the media and the general public. Support and help are provided to assist project coordinators and team leaders to generate an effective flow of information and publicity about the objectives and results of their work. Concrete measures taken by the European Commission to improve communication, outreach and dissemination of research results, such as the recent 'Communicating European Research 2005' conference in Brussels, are also presented.

    SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries live in various layers, such as social, cultural, political, religious, scientific, economical, and natural. The bilateral and multilateral sharing, exchange, interaction and communication between these layers can mark a turning point of the process of overall development of the region and role of public communication of science and technology could be crucial and vital in this regard. Though, there exist a variety of programmes and activities for taking science to masses and inculcating a scientific bent of mind into them, generally, it was observed that all these layers are working in isolation and there is hardly any interaction. The present study discovers a range of modes and means of science communication prevalent in these countries and tries to identify some common threads amongst them to make them more interactive and communicative to each other so that they can also share the power of scientific knowledge and scientific wisdom. It emerged that science communication through various media, be it print, broadcast, digital, folk or interactive in developing countries, especially in SAARC region, i. e., Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri-Lanka deserves much more serious efforts to be able to enhance their abysmally low level of scientific literacy, eradicate superstitions, and achieve a baseline public understanding of science. It is the high time to draw advantages from the programmes like Sixth Framework of the European Union especially meant for scientific cooperation (including science communication) between EU and developing countries. A close interaction and communication between these layers would make them more responsive to each other as well as paving the way to develop better understanding and cooperation leading to sustainable development.

    Mr. Yunwu Wang, a great publisher, impacted on both sides of the strait very much. “Universal Libraries”edited by him was an excellent and huge book series of popular cultures and sciences of the middle and higher levels. The author of this paper intents to follow his styles to edit the “Sexological Universal Libraries”. In this paper, the significance, contents, and styles of “Sexological Universal Libraries” were explained, and why it will be necessary to carry out the publishing cooperations between both sides of the strait was stated, and an invitation open to publishers of both sides of the strait to join this cooperation was given.
