Constipation can lead to gastrointestinal nervous dysfunction，which has a potential impact on colorectal cancer，hepatic encephalopathy and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases，and even induces cardiovascular and cerebrovascular accidents leading to sudden death. In clinical practice，if laxatives are used improperly，constipation aggravation and melanosis of colon often occur，leading to repeated attacks and poor prognosis. Zhishi（Aurantii Fructus Immaturus）-Houpo（Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex），as classic Qi-regulating drugs，have synergistic effects. They were first used in Dachengqi Decoction（大承气汤）and Xiaochengqi Decoction（小承气汤），Maziren Pill（麻子仁丸）and other prescriptions in ZHANG Zhongjing's Treatise on Cold Disease. The efficacy of these prescriptions in the treatment of constipation has been clinically verified. In this paper，the research progress of this drug in the treatment of functional constipation was reviewed，and its mechanism of action was discussed，in order to expand the idea of clinical rational drug use and new drug development.
