As a traditional medicinal material in China, Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) has a long history of medicinal use. It can promote blood circulation, promote Qi, dispel wind, relieve pain, etc. It is a traditional Chinese medicine of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. The pathogenesis of neurological diseases is complex and the symptoms are lingering, which seriously affects the health and quality of life of the patients. Modern pharmacological research has found that Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and its active ingredients, volatile oil and alkaloids, have the pharmacological effects of enhancing vascular endothelial function, improving coronary blood flow, lowering blood pressures, antioxidant free radicals, anti-inflammation, anti-platelet aggregation, anti-thrombosis, anti-cerebral ischemia, protecting nerve and other aspects. The inhibition of neuronal apoptosis, antioxidant, inhibition of nerve cell inflammation, protection of neurons and other effects have a good prevention and treatment effect on central nervous system diseases. This paper summarized the researches on the treatment of migraine, ischemic stroke, Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy in order to provide a scientific basis for the clinical application and basic research of Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) in nervous system diseases.
