With the pollution control of China entering a critical stage and the proposal of "dual carbon" targets, traditional pollution control technologies face numerous challenges in terms of synergistic reduction of carbon and pollutant emissions and coordinated control of pollutions in multiple media. There is an urgent need to explore a new paradigm for pollution control. To tackle the complex issue of urban environmental pollution, this work expands pollution control efforts from emission sources to environmental processes, offering a promising new approach.The self-purification function of urban environment can be enhanced through artificial technologies, and the pollutants can be purified in environmental processes under natural conditions by light, heat, wind, oxygen, and water. Furtherly, through coupling the artificial enhanced environmental self-purification technologies for gas-water-soil multi-medium, a "self-purifying city" can be constructed. The artificial enhanced self-purification technologies and "self-purifying city" would provide a new growth point for environmental protection, consolidate the current achievements of pollution source emission control, and ensure the continuous improvement of environmental quality. This paper introduces the theories and technologies of artificial enhanced self-purification and "self-purifying city" and provides an outlook on future research in this area.
