With the rapid development of digital economy, computing−aware network (CAN) is expected to become a new generation of information infrastructure, and its importance to the development of "new quality productivity" has become increasingly prominent. The development needs and trends, key problems and challenges, and application demonstration and verification of CANs are systematically sorted out and deeply investigated. The study found that the CAN presents the characteristics of ubiquitous, intelligent, reliable, and green, however, it is still in the initial stage, and no consensus has been reached in terms of technical system and working mechanism. In response to the above challenges, the corresponding development suggestions were put forward from the national, industrial, and technical levels, including accelerating the top−level design and standard formulation, promoting the research and development of key technologies, and building a green industrial ecology. These suggestions are of great significance for promoting the deep integration of CANs and traditional networks and accelerating the development of digital economy.
