Objective

To translate the Condensed version Modified Geriatric Dehydration Screening Tool into Chinese, and to test its reliability and validity among elderly inpatients in China.

Methods

The Brislin translation model was adopted for forward and back translation of the Modified Geriatric Dehydration Screening Tool.On the basis of expert inquiries and pre-surveys,the scale was culturally adapted to form the Chinese version of Condensed Modified Geriatric Dehydration Screening Tool. From January to August 2025,a total of 120 elderly inpatients from a tertiary grade A hospital in Yancheng city were conveniently selected as the research subjects. The Chinese version of Condensed Modified Geriatric Dehydration Screening Tool was used for the investigation to test its reliability and validity.

Results

The Chinese version of Condensed Modified Geriatric Dehydration Screening Tool was a unidimensional scale, with a total of 9 items. The item-level content validity index of the scale ranged from 0.857 to 1.000.The scale-level content validity index/average was 0.984.The scale-level content validity index/universal agreement was 0.889.The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.877.The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.892.Exploratory factor analysis extracted one male factor with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 50.693%.

Conclusions

The Chinese version of Condensed Modified Geriatric Dehydration Screening Tool exhibits good reliability and validity, with concise items, and could be used for initial screening of dehydration risk among elderly inpatients in China, providing a reliable instrument for early clinical identification of dehydration in elderly inpatients.
