To explore the clinical effect of modified Shaoyao Decoction combined with acupoint embedding in the treatment of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC).
A total of 120 patients with internal damp-heat type UC who visited the Department of Anorectal Diseases of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine from April 2023 to April 2025 were prospectively selected. They were grouped using the random number table method and assigned by independent researchers. Although the intervention measures limited the blinding of patients, the assessment of endoscopic outcomes strictly followed the blinding principle. The treatment was carried out by endoscopists who were unaware of the grouping situation. The control group (with 0 cases dropped out and 60 cases ultimately included) was given Western medicine and acupoint embedding treatment, while the combined group (with 0 cases dropped out and 60 cases ultimately included) was treated with modified Shaoyao Decoction on this basis. The treatment courses are all 6 weeks. The changes of TCM symptoms scores and ulcerative colitis endoscopic index of severity (UCEIS) before and after treatment were compared between groups. The expression levels of Th17/Treg cell balance-related indicators [IL-22, IL-21, IL-10, transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)] were detected, and the clinical efficacy and safety of the two groups before and after treatment were evaluated.
After 6 weeks of treatment, the total clinical effective rate in the combined group was 95.00% (57/60), which was much higher than 83.33% (50/60) in the control group (χ2 = 4.227, P < 0.05). The UCEIS scores, TCM symptoms scores and levels of IL-22 and IL-21 in the two groups after treatment were significantly reduced compared with those before treatment (P < 0.05), and the above scores and levels were lower in the combined group than those in the control group (P <0.05). The levels of IL-10 and TGF-β were significantly enhanced in the two groups compared to before treatment (P < 0.05), and the combined group had higher levels (P <0.05). There were no obvious adverse reactions in the two groups after treatment.
The modified Shaoyao Decoction combined with acupoint embedding thread can effectively improve the symptoms and therapeutic effect of UC patients, and can reduce the UCEIS scores. Additionally, it can also reduce the inflammatory response by regulating the expression levels of Th17/Treg cell balance-related indicators, with good safety.
