Latest ArticlesSummarizing and reviewing fine experience of public science literacy is of immense importance to improve the overall science literacy in China. Mainly based on the achievements garnered for science literacy in China from 1998 to 2018, science literacy progress is divided into 3 major periods by adopting the principle of Delphi method, namely, Top-level design period, Government-led promotion period, Socially- mobilized period. Finally, the prospect of science literacy building is further discussed.
In the 1950-1977 National General Bibliography, 110 chemical popular science books were included. At first, many books were translated books from Soviet. After that, Chinese originals gradually picked up increase. Following the surging of slogan “marching towards science”, the number of books rose dramatically. Due to various political movements in the 1960s, the number began to decline. And then it rebounded in the middle and late period of “Cultural Revolution”. The Hundred Thousand Whys was the largest encyclopedic popular science book published during that period, it was published in three editions, and the chemical part had five volumes. During the “Cultural Revolution”, the number of chemical popular science books was very small, mainly used to interpret Marxism-Leninism and assist political struggles. The content of the chemical popular science books from 1950 to 1977 focuses on the most basic chemistry knowledge, mainly comprehensive knowledge, common substances and phenomena, carbon and organic matter.
With the development of social economy and urbanization in China, the phenomenon of “Not in my backyard”(NIMBY) represented by waste incineration and PX (Para-xylene) projects has occurred from time to time in China, as a result, public engagement in scientific dialogue has become quite necessary. In the study, two dialogues arranged in a formal conference room and a cafe may respectively provide some practice for exploring scientific dialogue mechanisms among experts, enterprises, government departments and the public. The comparative analysis of the two dialogues showed that the speaking frequency per unit time of the latter increased by 27% over the former; experts in the former occupied nearly half of the speaking time, while the latter dropped to 38%, the proportion of other representatives' speaking time increased in varying degrees; the average speaking frequency and volume of men in both dialogues were higher than those of women; the former was more similar to “answering reporters' questions”, while the latter relatively fully expressed their respective views. Finally, it briefly introduced the research of several modes of participation in Germany, and pointed out the main challenges for scientific dialogue to provide some reference for further practice.
The research analyzes Shanghai Science & Technology Museum, Changfeng Ocean World, Children's Museum, Insect Museum, Aviation Science Museum, Wind power Science Museum by using the six elements (Factor Conditions, Demand Conditions, Related and Supporting Industries, Strategy, Structure and Rivalry, Chance, Government) of Porter Diamond Model. The main advantages and disadvantages in the development of Science Popularization Industry are explored. Based on that, the research puts forward the main suggestions to improve the industry competition ability about Domestic Science Museum: Firstly, make the national support be in tandem with the science museum industry; Secondly, promote the supply side of the industry development of Science Museum; Thirdly, stimulate the demand side of public popular science consumption; Fourthly, build the PPP (Public Private Partnership) Model of Science Museum and Social Cooperation. Through the above-mentioned four suggestions, these are hoped that the ability of the Industry Development of Science Museum could be excavated to the maximum extent so as to promote the great development and prosperity of Popular Science Culture Industry in China.
The imbalance between science popularization and scientific innovation still exists in China currently, albeit the central government emphasize the importance of scientific popularization. We suggest setting up a trial credit system in colleges and universities to encourage graduate students to attend activities of popularization of science and promote the construction of science popularization talent. Colleges and universities are important intellectual resources centers for activities of popularization of science, thus it is of practical significance to carry out credit system for in colleges and universities by combining domestic and foreign experience. Moreover, we should also be aware of the differences between the education system and the popular science system. We need to think deeply about the problems that may arise and work them through earnestly.
With the rapid development of Internet economy and urbanization of “intelligence” is being accepted by more and more countries and the public. The paper takes the framework and application of the APP service and management platform (it belongs to the construction of digital operation and management system for zhejiang science of technology museum and has been in operation for nearly one year) as an example. In line with commonalities of the routine operation service and management pattern, visitor terminals are designed for the public, and management terminals are designed for the working staff. The paper also comes up with some ideas concerning how to apply digital services to the operation of science popularization venue and make it develop in a sustainable way.
With the development of science education, History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science (HPS) have become the focus of science education research, the educational value of history of science has captured more and more attention form science education researchers, especially its impact on the nature of science. Science museum is suitable for using the history of science to improve students' nature of science because of its rich resources, but the issue is lacking theoretical achievements. Firstly, the papers put forward the Framework for Activity of Science History Based on Exhibits (FASHBE), which may provide a guide for designing activity of history of science. Secondly, the case of electromagnetic was designed under the guide of the framework for primary school students. The Design-Based Research was applied to implement the case of electromagnetic three iterations so that we can revise it. We also used the questionnaires before and after case at the third implementation to measure and evaluate the educational effect of the case and the framework. The theory, the designing method, and the case are instructive for the design and implementation of the activity of history of science. It is helpful for history of science application in the school and science museum to improve individual's understanding of the nature of science.
As an important carrier of astronomical science popularization, the publishing development level of astronomical science books rightly reflects the breadth and depth of astronomical science work. At the same time, the number and quality of astronomical science books published in a certain historical period can also reflect the level of astronomical development in a country at that time. The paper makes a statistical analysis of the publishing of astronomical popular science books from the birth of New China to the end of the “Cultural Revolution”, and subsequently summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the publication of astronomical science books during that period. It is of great theoretical and practical significance to promote the publication of contemporary astronomical popular science books in China and even the development of science popularization as a whole.
The Latest Middle School Textbook, Physics translated by Xie Honglai and published by the Commercial Press was the first modern physics textbook in China. With richness in content and a complete set of elements in textbooks, the book places emphasis on the teachings by teachers and learnings by students, on the dissemination of scientific knowledge and the enlightenment of scientific methods, on the construction of physical terminologies, and on reading habits of the Chinese people. Albeit the book contains an excessive number of learning knowledge and the exercises are highly difficult, its focus on teaching methods, and on popularizing scientific methods still embody great significance for China's current textbooks.
The tacit knowledge theory of Micheal Polanyi is rich in connotation and extension. It is of great significance to understand the knowledge and technology that illustrates tacit root of articulating knowledge and the practical character of tacit knowledge. China's current agricultural technology popularization is facing dilemma, which are perceived evidently among the farmers and the science popularizers. From the perspective of epistemology, the lack of clear understanding of the essence of agricultural technology popularization is a major cause of the dilemma. In order to get out of the current “dilemma”, the following ideas can be used for reference: 1) Rethinking the three main subjects of agricultural technology popularization and their relation; 2) Fully recognizing the tacit attributes and priority of agricultural technology popularization; 3) The application of tacit knowledge in the development, promotion and acquisition of agricultural technology.
