Science communication should promote the combination of elite culture and grassroots community and realize China’s cultural reconstruction, modernization of Chinese and complete enlightenment.
Economic and social development requires China to improve the public scientific literacy as soon as possible. science popularization is an important support to the construction of the people’s scientific quality. The current level of the scientific quality in China is low. One important reason for the low scientific quality is the insufficient number and low level of the science popularization professionals. It is necessary to speed up the development of the science popularization professionals. The number of the science popularization professionals should be added as soon as possible, while he ability of them should be enhanced. To develop the science popularization professionals, we should do the important things first, make a system of interlocking measures, and ultimately achieve the goals of forming a “better structure, higher quality” team of science popularization professionals. With this team, we can give a solid support for the construction of the overall Well-off Society.
This paper reviews the discussion of concepts of scientific literacy and science and technology education for adults. It also explores the concepts and contents of the informal science education in India and China. This article tries to analyze the potential effectiveness in both countries and make suggestions for the reformation of science education policies of for farmers in our country.
Arctic and Antarctic regions attract human beings for exploration, expedition and tourism owing to their inherent values in science, environment, aesthetics and wildness. This provides the best opportunities for polar science’s education and outreach. The objective, feature and concept of China’s polar education and outreach program were outlined and analyzed. The reviews on the key polar education and outreach projects during 2007-2008 International Polar Year was performed with perspective on their contents, organizations and achievements and contributions. Their features were very obvious: longtime-range, key theme, optimum resource integration, wider cooperation, great influence and significance. Meanwhile, some of new ideas or suggestions on China’s polar education and outreach in the future are addressed, with reference on the good practice.
This survey was conducted during the science popularization exhibition which was held in Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, Shenzhen Municipality and CAS to commemorate the World Environment Day of 2009. The results of 800 questionnaires showed that most visitors’ education background is at higher level, the participation of men and women is almost equal; most of them are between 21 and 30 years old. Nearly half of the visitors were active to understand knowledge about environmental protection, visitors were satisfied with the exhibition. It meeted the visitors’ need for both entertaining and learning. To carefully consider the exhibition’s theme, publicity, content, form and objects is the key issue to a good science popularization exhibition.
Sciences concerning with natural history are relatively easy understood by ordinary people and related closely to daily lives of common people. It is reasonable to give priority to the propaganda and practice of natural history in leisure society. Civil organizations of natural history play an important role in science communication. The paper, according to several published papers, briefly introduces some organizations such as the Young Naturalists’ Society, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Isis Society in Dresden, the Portland Society of Natural History, the Boston Society of Natural History and the Sierra Club. It suggests that Chinese government support the self-organizing development of civic natural history groups.
According to the management system, popular science periodicals in China can be divided into two kinds, local popular science periodicals and imported popular science periodicals. They have differences in image type. These differences affect the dissemination of scientific information. This paper takes Knowledge Is Power, Encyclopedic Knowledge, Universal Science, Newton Scientific World as examples to analyze the difference of information representation, information explanation and information supplement, all of these will be useful for the development of popular science periodicals.
Science popularization events haved played an important role in promoting Chinese people’s scientific literacy. An event of “2010 National Science Day in ” was evaluated as an example. The performance improvement and sustainability of science popularization events may depend on the evaluation of effectiveness partly.
According to previous research findings, this paper summarized the key characteristics of science popularization industry and represented its connotation and main categories. Afterwards, the author analyzed the main problems which hinder science popularization industry from efficient developing at the present stage and demonstrated the basic principles and master tasks to encourage science popularization industry development during the 12th Five-Year Plan. Accordingly, several countermeasures and advices were put forward at last.
