ArchiveThe contemporary public communication of science and technology has developed to a new stage of using various media and channels to communicate various contents, and the fragmentation and diversification characteristics make the public communication of science and technology is facing many new challenges. Therefore, the contemporary public communication of science and technology has to actively promote the construction of system and the omni-media strategy, in order to integrate various media to form a public communication system, and raise the influence of the public communication of science and technology.
This study selected both urban and rural areas of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and analyzed the public trends and characteristics in the requirements about science popularization in terms of the media, content and level. The results can provide scientific basis and advices of science popularization work-related organizations.
Although China's overall S&T level keeps rising, many achievements of its research projects are shelved as papers, patents or technical reports that can only be understood by a few experts, leading to an unbalanced development between scientific research and science popularization and making undue contributions to the improvement of scientific literacy of Chinese people. In this paper, the authors make a systematic analysis of major challenges facing the popularization of the findings of scientific research projects, draw lessons from advanced countries in this regard, and offer policy recommendations for promoting science popularization of research projects in China.
The measurement of civic scientific literacy, estimating the level of civic scientific literacy, provides an important reference for the implementation of the National Scheme for Scientific Literacy. The measure used in our country should be created based on a combination of abroad experience and achievements with specific conditions of the country, which can not only facilitate the international comparison, but also reflect the level of public scientific literacy in our country and judge whether the desired goal of increasing scientific literacy have been achieved. This paper aims to: 1) analyze the structure of conceptions civic scientific literacy from both domestic and abroad, 2) explore the intension, basic standard and measurement of civic scientific literacy that are suitable for conditions in China, and 3) establish a six-element model and a three-level-index system from two dimensions of “content” and “degree” for evaluating public scientific literacy in China.
Based on the analysis of culture, science & technology, economy, and political backgrounds of different historical periods, the author puts forward that the development of the museums' educational function has been deeply influenced by the industry development, science & technology motivation, the demand for the public scientific literacy of the society, the social system and the environment, and the development of the theory of the science communication and science educationideas. As the evolution of biological species to adapt to the environmental changes, we can find the similar evolution process occurs on the science and technology museums. So, the author tries to prove that the decisive factor of the development motivation for the science and technology museums is the demand for the education as the development of the productive forces and the science & technology.
Public participation of Xiangshan Science Conference (XsSC henceforth) is proposed and its implication on science communication is discussed. Two levels of engagement and, accordingly, two levels of science communication are identified. Their correlation and mutual promotion is examined. Some basic thoughts on practical measures of gradually involving lay people in XsSC are put forward, and several unique advantages of this institutional innovation of XsSC are discussed.
Based on the Web of Science, by using the key words of “climate change”, this paper retrieves research articles on climate change published in the journal of Science Communication, and analyzes these articles from several aspects such as article types, publication year, country/region distributions, authors' background, publication agencies and research topics, so as to reflect the research status of climate change in the field of science communication through quantitative research. The study shows that the number of papers on climate change published in the journal of Science Communication is relatively few, and there are 33 papers. Secondly, the distribution of climate change studies in the world is un even. The number of papers from Europe and the United States accounts for 90.9% of the total. Finally, the research horizon of climate change studies in science communication is very extensive. In addition to social science, it also covers environmental science and health science, showing strong interdisciplinary characteristics.
Science communication should make contribution for scientific research. Each discipline has a special way when they show their own achievements, forming different characteristics. Chemistry, as the basic discipline in the natural science, has been accepted a great attraction from the society. The topic of article aims to find scientific visualization of chemistry characteristics and common ground and show the beauty of chemistry by analyzing the chemical properties of this article and of high impact factor journals of chemistry cover image features.
The article focuses on the comparison between “One Hundred Popular Science Books” compiled by the Washington Academy of Sciences In 1921, and “100 or so Books that shaped a Century of Science” made by American Scientist in 2011. By comparing the category, items and the authors of the selected books, the notion of science writing in America changing from popularizing the knowledge to inspiring the science ideas and interest can be shown clearly, as well as the “popularizing” being the consciousness of scientists and science studies today. All these can be referenced for our own science writings.
With the brilliant achievements of science and technology research, Soviet Union also widely popularized scientific knowledge, and a group of excellent science popularization writers appeared. At the same time, the outstanding science popularization works of Soviet Union were constantly introduced to China, and its far-reaching influence on the development of science popularization enterprise of China were made and summarized in three main stages: preliminary translation period of science popularization works of Soviet Union, boom period of translation and publishing in China of science popularization works of Soviet Union, and revisiting its classic period. The important role of science popularization works of Soviet Union to the development of science popularization enterprise of China was expounded, the reasons why science popularization works of Soviet Union popularized in the Chinese readers was analyzed, and proposals were offered for the popular science writing of China at the present stage.
The article analyzes the content characteristics of Roald Hoffman's popular science book “The Same and Not The Same”, including the impact of his writing style, interests, personal experiences on his idea of science popularization. Based on it, The author proposed the systematic construction of science popularization from the dimension of science education, and adding the elements of science and humanities in the growth process of scientists and technology professionals, thus to create conditions for the emergence of excellent science popularization professionals.
It is with one considered as historical narrative drama—Copenhagen that this paper begins, in which an analysis of its inconsistence with the facts aims to achieve its formal structure about scientific experiments and the philosophy connotation behind the form. The paper is expected to expound the dialectical relations between science and humanity as well as explore the potential new approaches for science communication: to substantiate scientific form with ample humanistic cores instead of wrapping scientific content with “cultural-hollow” literature and art genres.
