Farmers are the principal part of building a new socialist countryside. It is the basic assurance of building a new socialist countryside to create a new type of farmers who has a good basic education and understands both agricultural techniques and business operations. This paper analyzed the connotation of new type of farmers, current situation of farmers competence and the restricted factor of farmers education and training. The paper also laid out the following countermeasures and suggestions for the training and fostering of new type of farmers: rely on the support form government, mobilize the whole society’s participation, accelerate development of “five contingents” and promote the “Program of Three Entrances into the Villages” of Farmer’s Education and Training in order to make farmers have access to education and training on the spot.
The term ‘public understanding of science (PUS)’ considers the relationship of science and society with a double focus. On the one hand it refers to a variety of activities that engage the public with science. This takes at times the character of a social movement, involving actors, resources, and a growing repertoire of activities. It is on the other hand a growing field of empirical social research. This paper will trace developments in the latter through three phases, which are associated with a change in language: from science literacy until the 1980s, to public understanding of science from the 1980s into the 1990s, and science and society since the 1990s. Naming matters here. Each period is associated with a particular diagnosis of the problems in the relationship between science and society, particular research questions and preferred intervention strategies, and each period displays a rhetoric of ‘ progress’ over the previous one. Comparing the three ‘paradigms’, I will ask the question: is there any progress in this field of research?
Science popularization is the product of labor division and social division. In 18th century, scientists became a specific social estate, whose responsibility is to communicate scientific knowledge and spirit to the public. Science popularization becomes more and more important along with the social progress and increase of information and knowledge. It helps to reduce the negativeness in differentiation of information and the deficiency of knowledge as well. It appears to be indispensable elements in social integration. Science popularization is not only the important component of scientific perception of development, but also the necessary social action of its implementation. As an important form of social contacts, science popularization will have its social value only if it acts as the bridge between science and society, and makes the public understand science.
In nowadays, while S&T exert extensive and deep influence on production and life of human beings day by day, environment turns out to be the focus of people’s attention. “Environment Affairs” bring much pressure to the governments and civil officials at different levels. The public blames the government for its inability in supervision, but in fact, the governments and civil officials care more about the problem of environment than the public because of their responsibility. “Investigation and strategy report on scientific literacy of civil officials at the level of bureaus” shows, 60% of the civil officials at the level of bureaus “care much” about the environmental pollution; 98.7% of which support the S&T research on “control and renovate the pollution”; over 90% of which take into account the problem of environment in the process of policy making.
More than four hundred years ago, the western cultural of science and technology had been diffusing into the mainland of China via Macao. While conveying religious culture, the Jesuits brought to China the knowledge of occidental astronomy, mathematics, geography, and other scientific subjects. At that time, Macao became a center for culture spread in China, and even in the Far East. With the multi-cultural background, there have been numerous non-governmental organizations active in Macao. They are playing an important role in promoting the development of in the new era. However, it should be seriously taken that the rapid expansion of gaming-tourist industry influences young generation in normal growth. Macao is still shouldering heavy responsibilities of education for science popularization.
