Based on the data from popular marine science books published in mainland China since the Opium War, it is believed that for the purposes of this study, the development of popular marine science books is classified into gestation (1840—1911), germination (1911—1949), startup and slow growth (1949—1978), recovery adjustment (1978—1998), steady development (1998—2013), and boom leap (2013—2020) . Through the analysis, it is found that the scale of book publishing in our country has been gradually expanded to cover all fields of marine science, the interdisciplinary features are becoming more and more obvious, the scope of science popularization is expanding, and the creative subjects tend to be specialized and systematized. Innovation in marine science and technology is the intrinsic driving force behind the growth of popular marine science books. The national marine science and science popularization policy play an important role in the development of popular marine science books. The international marine environment and technological environment have an external influence on popular marine science and science books.
