Objective:

To investigate the clinical efficacy of ZHU's chiropractic manipulation combined with Jianyao Pill in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH) accompanied by liver and kidney deficiency syndrome.

Methods:

A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 201 patients with liver-kidney deficiency type of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) treated at the Cervical-Lumbar Pain Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Changzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between February 2024 and December 2024. Patients were divided into an observation group and a control group based on treatment protocols. The control group (100 cases) received Jianyao Pill therapy, while the observation group (101 cases) received ZHU's spinal manipulation therapy in addition to the control group's treatment. Both groups underwent a 4-week treatment course. Clinical efficacy, lumbar function [modified Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), lumbar flexion range (LFR), and lumbar flexion/extension muscle strength], pain status [Simplified McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), pressure pain threshold (PPT) at tender points], and adverse reaction rates were evaluated.

Results:

The total effective rate was significantly higher in the observation group than in the control group (P <0.05). Post-treatment, both groups showed reduced ODI and SF-MPQ scores compared to baseline (P < 0.05), with greater reductions in the observation group (P < 0.05). LFR, lumbar flexion/extension muscle strength, and PPT levels increased in both groups (P <0.05), with higher values in the observation group (P <0.05). No significant difference in adverse reaction rates was observed between groups (P >0.05).

Conclusion:

ZHU's chiropractic manipulation combined with Jianyao Pill demonstrates significant efficacy in improving lumbar function and alleviating pain in LDH patients with liver-kidney deficiency syndrome, with a favorable safety profile.
