Cough is a complex neurophysiological reflex. Cough receptors are located in the airway sensory nerve endings in the form of receptors and ion channels. After being stimulated, they generate signals that are transmitted to the cough center of the brainstem through the vagus nerve, and then the corresponding muscle group is activated by the efferent nerve to produce cough. Using cough receptors as the targets for the treatment of cough has a bright future. This article introduces the current potential targets for the treatment of cough and the development of new antitussive drugs, hoping to provide reference for the development of antitussive drugs.
