To investigate the application effects of an intervention combining nostalgia therapy and intelligent rehabilitation gloves training on alleviating negative emotions in older stroke patients, and to evaluate its feasibility and promotion value in primary care institutions.
A total of 60 older stroke patients were recruited and randomly assigned to either an experimental group or a control group, with 30 cases in each group. Participants in the control group received training using a pneumatic glove under two modes: “bilateral mirror training” and “active game playing”, each for 15 minutes per session, once daily, five days per week, for a total of three weeks. The experimental group received additional nostalgia therapy training for 30 minutes per session, once daily, five days per week, also over three weeks. All participants were assessed before and after the intervention using the following scales: anxiety was evaluated with the generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7) and the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS); depressive symptoms were measured using the geriatric depression scale (GDS), the Montgomery–Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS), the patient health questionnaire-9 items (PHQ-9), and the Chinese version of the 10-item stroke aphasic depression questionnaire–hospital version (SADQ-H10); activities of daily living were assessed with the modified Barthel index (MBI).
After three weeks of intervention, both groups demonstrated significant improvements in GAD-7, SAS, GDS, MADRS, PHQ-9, SADQ-H10, and MBI scores compared with baseline (P<0.05). The experimental group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group across all scales (P<0.05). Comparison of post-intervention progress revealed that the experimental group achieved superior improvements in SAS, GDS, MADRS, SADQ-H10, and MBI scores relative to the control group (P<0.05).
For older stroke patients presenting with negative emotions such as anxiety and depression, the intervention combining nostalgia therapy and intelligent rehabilitation gloves training can effectively alleviate their anxiety and depressive states, enhance their motivation for rehabilitation, and thereby further accelerate the recovery process. This intervention demonstrates good potential for promotion in primary healthcare institutions, and future research should further explore its application in community-based rehabilitation settings.
