Latest ArticlesThe issue of China world geoparks, featured by multiple functions in terms of geoheritage protection, geosciences popularization, and economic development, have been the focus of government policy-makers, global geologists and visitors for ages. Despite their promising traits, many issues concerning the unique geosciences popularization have not been fully addressed due to the lacking of effective management system and reasonable science education pattern. In this study, we have investigated the geosciences popularization in 27 world geoparks in China to framework their geoscicence popularization types. As a result, four types of world geoparks were outlined including economy-driven (G1), economy-oriented (G2), Economy-protection-popularization balanced (G3), and popularization-protection (G4), providing a significant basis for promoting geopark science popularization construction.
This paper uses the survey of the literature, questionnaire and interviews in order to study the function of the public cultural facilities choosing the most representative public cultural facilities, including science and technology museums, libraries and science education venues in Guangzhou, Wuhan and Xi'an. Through the statistical analysis of the research data, this paper establishes a new perspective and classification from the motives, needs, behavior characteristics and satisfaction conditions of the audience, and proposes countermeasures to enhance the science education of public cultural facilities in order to meet the demands of the public.
By investigating on the characteristics and modes of the current operation in Science and Technology Museums (STMs), and taking into consideration the positive and negative effects and the potential risks of making the museums free to the public, management strategies are proposed for opening STMs free of charge. First of all, based on our survey on the main reasons why people don't like visiting the museums and the effects of the free of charge policy on the museums, it is proposed that STMs should be imprudent in making them free to the public. Based on the characteristics of the STMs, the potential visitor groups and their localities, the STMs should be classified and adopt different policies. The government should play its role in regulating the STMs, help the STMs improve their own capability-building, and create an environment conducive to their overall development in terms of the museum faculty, infrastructure, service, operations and management, so the STMs could get ready to open to the general public free of charge.
It studies the problems to be solved in the promotion of science popularization education functions, these issues include lack of thinking and understanding, shortage of funds, the imbalance of resource development, talents bottleneck, out of touch with the school science education, resources construction, inadequate mechanisms, imperfect policy mechanism and inflexible approach. It proposes the conversion of ideas, reasonable planning and scientific construction, establishing and improving funding mechanisms, realizing the link of science education in schools, communities and social and public cultural facilities, vigorously training science talents, improving the mechanism of resources sharing, building relevant supervision and evaluation and protection mechanisms, to realize enhancements of science educational function.
Based on empirical rinvestigation of Shanghai Universities, free of charge policy of science Museums of College and Universities, has made some achievement, The college and University science museums create their own high-quality science resources, and can play a more important role to improve the public scientific literacy.
In Europe, science centers in UK are most energetic and developed. Science centers are in the position administrated by the ministry of science, the ministry of education and ministry of culture without a department taking responsibility in the long term. Science centers in UK have to waddle on a small narrow path between “philanthropy” and “profit-making”, because of the lack of stable public investment, which made them facing great troubles and an uncertain future.
The course of development of the risk governance following the turnover and the evolution of several models, the main body of each model and their relationship have changed in the specific political, historical and cultural context. One of the reasons for this change was public decreasing trust in experts. This paper outlines the trust theory in risk governance, discusses the role of trust in risk governance, analyses the important factors affecting public trust in experts, and finally puts some suggestions on further study of public trust in experts.
This article chooses two different types of Internet media, The Sina and People's Daily Online, to investigate and compare how these two Internet media conduct special reports on natural disaster. This paper takes the Yushu earthquake as an example and finds out that People's Daily Online is doing better on taking advantages of all media forms while the Sina is doing better on the classification of news. Furthermore, People's Daily Online focuses on conveying government's decisions and opinions to public. However, the Sina puts more attention on telling rescue stories vividly.
With the rapid development of mobile internet, science outreach has become more interactive, easily available and involved. Based on case study, we suggest that the mobile technology and service has deeply changed science outreach in the aspects of science outreach digital publication, science museum guide, science research project, science outreach commerce, social network and online community for science outreach. Possible impacts on science outreach institutions are also analyzed.
Commissioned by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, China Research Institute for Science Popularization made a survey on the situation of basic popular science staffs understanding science popularization in Beijing area. People working in science museums, community and off-campus educational institutions were involved in the survey. The results showed that more than 80 percent of the basic popular science staffs understanding of science is rational. They had a certain degree of attention and judgment on the role of scientific popularization, their capacity on scientific popularization and social factors of scientific popularization. We got some recommendations of the mechanism, the important duty of the basic units (organizations or agencies) and promoting the role of Popular Science volunteers in basic popular science staff.
