    Does the difference of science communication (SC) and technology communication (TC) lie in the contents of science or technology? The author reviews the meanings and characteristics of SC and TC, and believes that the difference does not lie in the contents of science or technology, but in the goals and the tasks, the role of technology, the key knowledge flow, the target groups, and the communication channels.

    The major places where CAST plays a role in minor's extracurricular science and technology education are science and technology museums (science centers), youth science studios and the rural extracurricular youth learning centers, etc. By analyzing activities, team building, management system as well as investment of these places, the authors find that there are still some problems in the exhibitory education concept, contents of activities, service capacity and its combination with school science education. In dealing with these problems, this paper suggests that these places should adhere to the concept of people-orientation and reinformcement of the resource integration, contents construction and team building as well.

    It is an inevitable requirement on the harmonious and orderly public participation for building a harmonious society. The harmony of the public participation in science and technology policy-making serves to strengthen the harmonious process of science and technology policy-making, to promote public harmonious interaction with the government and the scientists, and to cultivate a more participatory public of sound reason, and so on. Strengthening the harmony of the public participation in the science and technology policy-making, we need to strengthen the education of a comprehensive public understanding of the science, to perfect the legal system and institution for public harmony participation, to build a participatory culture of science and technology policy-making, and to broaden the social domain for the harmony public participation and so on.

    Botanical gardens (including arboreta) hold documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education. Their main tasks are ex situ conservation of plant diversity and realization of sustainable use of plant resources, and carrying out of relevant plant displays, public education and scientific investigations. Worldwide there are about 2 000 botanical gardens and arboreta of different types holding 80 000 plant taxa, including many rare and threatened plants. Chinese botanical gardens, currently about 160 in number, have made great progresses in plant introduction, acclimatization and domestication, utilization and commercial development, and conservation. Their important roles in public education and tourism are being recognized. Botanical garden workers have achieved innovative theoretical and technological results in their researches. The gardens are also coming into line with the world in management, policy making, training, and computerization of plant record system. We expect the Chinese botanical gardens to embrace the challenges and opportunities of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, achieve more in garden construction, science popularization and tourism, capacity building, and research, meet the demands of economic and social development and protection and rational use of the environment and resources, to go hand in hand with botanical gardens of the world.
