In the paper, the risks of short circuit for outdoor bus bar caused by foreign objects are indicated through analysis aiming at the accident of protective trip for longitudinal differential of main transformer due to short circuit of AB phase for 10 kV exposed bus bar caused by birds in 110 kV substation. The feasibility for retrofitting bus bar insulation of iron and steel enterprise with the self-fusing tape of silicone rubber with radiation crosslinking is discussed combining with the trend of insulation technology. Moreover, it is elaborated that the material is with such advantages as high temperature resistance, self-fusing sealing and weather resistance. The problem of short circuit caused by lapping of foreign object is completely solved by applying the material in 10 kV bus bars of Baotou Steel so that maintenance free and safe operations are achieved, which could provide long-term protective scheme for the industry.
