In recent years, the growing urgency for carbon capture has placed chemical absorption at the forefront of post-combustion CO2 capture technologies, valued for its high efficiency and process maturity. However, traditional amine-based methods face significant challenges during rich solvent regeneration, including high energy demand, solvent degradation, and substantial operating costs, which limit their scalability. To overcome these limitations, catalytic CO2 desorption has emerged as an innovative approach. By incorporating solid acid catalysts into the CO2-rich amine solvent regeneration process, this technique lowers the energy barrier for CO2 release, enhances reaction kinetics, and enables efficient solvent regeneration at low temperatures. As a result, it considerably cuts energy consumption and solvent loss. This paper systematically reviews the research on key catalyst materials in catalytic desorption technology over the past five years, with a focus on the structure-activity relationships of different types of solid catalysts. It highlights the synergistic mechanisms of catalytically active sites (such as Lewis acid, Brønsted acid, and basic sites) in catalytic CO2 desorption reactions and their influence on desorption pathways. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the key scientific and technological challenges currently faced by this technology and provides an outlook on its industrial application prospects in the field of low-cost carbon capture.
