The poor photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance derived from insufficient charge separation in hematite photoanode crucially limits its application. Gradient doping with band bending in a large region is then considered as a promising strategy, facilitating the charge transfer ability due to the built-in electric field. Herein, we developed a synthetic strategy to prepare gradient Ti-doped ultrathin hematite photoelectrode and systematically investigated its PEC performance. The as-synthesized electrode (1.5-6.0% doping level from the surface to the substrate) delivered a photocurrent of about 1.30 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is nearly 100% higher than that of homogeneously doped hematite electrode. The enhanced charge transfer property, induced by the energy band bending due to the built-in electric field, has been further confirmed by electrochemical measurements. This strategy of gradient doping should be adaptable and can be applied for other functional materials in various fields.

Direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) has been considered as a promising energy conversion device for stationary and mobile applications. Advanced platinum (Pt) electrocatalysts for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) are critical for DFAFC. However, the oxidation of formic acid on Pt catalysts often occurs via a dual pathway mechanism, which hinders the catalytic activity owing to the CO poisoning. Herein, we directly exfoliate bulk antimony to 2D antimonene (Sb) and in situ load Pt nanoparticles onto antimonene sheets with the assistance of ethylenediamine. According to the Bader charge analysis, the charge transfer from antimonene to Pt occurs, confirming the electronic interaction between Pt and Sb. Interestingly, antimonene, as a cocatalyst, alters the oxidation pathway for FAOR over Pt catalyst and makes FAOR follow the more efficient dehydrogenation pathway. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation demonstrates that antimonene can activate Pt to be a lower oxidative state and facilitate the oxidation of HCOOH into CO2 via a direct pathway, resulting in a weakened intermediate binding strength and better CO tolerance for FAOR. The specific activity of FAOR on Pt/Sb is 4.5 times, and the mass activity is 2.6 times higher than the conventional Pt/C.

Negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR), also known as “auxetic”, is a highly desired property in a wide range of future industry applications. By employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, metal matrix nanocomposites reinforced by graphene sheets are studied in this paper. In the simulation, single crystal copper with crystal orientation 1 1 0 is selected as the matrix and an embedded-atom method (EAM) potential is used to describe the interaction of copper atoms. An aligned graphene sheet is selected as reinforcement, and a hybrid potential, namely, the Erhart-Albe potential, is used for the interaction between a pair of carbon atoms. The interaction between the carbon atom and copper atom is approximated by the Lennard-Jones (L-J) potential. The simulation results showed that both graphene and copper matrix possess in-plane NPRs. The temperature-dependent mechanical properties of graphene/copper nanocomposites with in-plane NPRs are obtained for the first time.

Lots of research efforts have been devoted to increase the transmission capacity in optical communications using orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing. To enable long-haul OAM mode transmission, an in-line OAM fiber amplifier is desired. A ring-core fiber (RCF) is considered to be a preferable design for stable OAM mode propagation in the fiber. Here, we demonstrate an OAM fiber amplifier based on a fabricated ring-core erbium-doped fiber (RC-EDF). We characterize the performance of the RC-EDF-assisted OAM fiber amplifier and demonstrate its use in OAM multiplexing communications with OAM modes carrying quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. The amplification of two OAM modes over four wavelengths is demonstrated in a data-carrying OAM-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing system. The obtained results show favorable performance of the RC-EDF-assisted OAM fiber amplifier. These demonstrations may open up new perspectives for long-haul transmission in capacity scaling fiber-optic communications employing OAM modes.

Transient, chemically powered micromotors are promising biocompatible engines for microrobots. We propose a framework to investigate in detail the dynamics and the underlying mechanisms of bubble propulsion for transient chemically powered micromotors. Our observations on the variations of the micromotor active material and geometry over its lifetime, from initial activation to the final inactive state, indicate different bubble growth and ejection mechanisms that occur stochastically, resulting in time-varying micromotor velocity. We identify three processes of bubble growth and ejection, and in analogy with macroscopic multigear machines, we call each process a gear. Gear 1 refers to bubbles that grow on the micromotor surface before detachment while in Gear 2 bubbles hop out of the micromotor. Gear 3 is similar in nature to Gear 2, but the bubbles are too small to contribute to micromotor motion. We study the characteristics of these gears in terms of bubble size and ejection time, and how they contribute to micromotor displacement. The ability to tailor the shell polarity and hence the bubble growth and ejection and the surrounding fluid flow is demonstrated. Such understanding of the complex multigear bubble propulsion of transient chemical micromotors should guide their future design principles and serve for fine tuning the performance of these micromotors.

Chiral molecules that do not superimpose on their mirror images are the foundation of all life forms on earth. Chiral molecules exhibit chiroptical responses, i.e., they have different electromagnetic responses to light of different circular polarizations. However, chiroptical responses in natural materials, such as circular dichroism and optical rotation dispersion, are intrinsically small because the size of a chiral molecule is significantly shorter than the wavelength of electromagnetic wave. Conventional technology for enhancing chiroptical signal entails demanding requirements on precise alignment of the chiral molecules to certain nanostructures, which however only leads to a limited performance. Herein, we show a new approach towards enhancement of chiroptical effects through a Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity formed by two handedness-preserving metamirrors operating in the GHz region. We experimentally show that the FP cavity resonator can enhance the optical activity of the chiral molecule by an order of magnitude. Our approach may pave the way towards state-of-the-art chiral sensing applications.

Developing ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) materials with smart response to external stimuli is of great interest in photonics applications, whereas the manipulation of molecular stacking on tuning such dynamic UOP is still a formidable challenge. Herein, we have reported two polymorphs with distinct photoactivated dynamic UOP behavior based on a pyridine derivative for the first time. Our experiment revealed that the dynamic UOP behavior including photoactivation and deactivation feature is highly dependent on irradiation intensity and environmental atmosphere. Additionally, given the unique dynamic UOP feature, these phosphors have been successfully applied to phosphorescence-dependent molecular logic gate and timing data storage. This result not only paves a way to design smart functional materials but also expands the scope of the applications on organic phosphorescence materials.

In aquaculture industry, fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants are cultivated in fresh, salt, or brackish waters. The increasing demand of aquatic products has stimulated the rapid growth of aquaculture industries. How to effectively monitor and control water quality is one of the key concerns for aquaculture industry to ensure high productivity and high quality. There are four major categories of water quality concerns that affect aquaculture cultivations, namely, (1) physical parameters, e.g., pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity, (2) organic contaminants, (3) biochemical hazards, e.g., cyanotoxins, and (4) biological contaminants, i.e., pathogens. While the physical parameters are affected by climate changes, the latter three are considered as environmental factors. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of sensors, biosensors, and analytical technologies available for monitoring aquaculture water quality. They include low-cost commercial sensors and sensor network setups for physical parameters. They also include chromatography, mass spectrometry, biochemistry, and molecular methods (e.g., immunoassays and polymerase chain reaction assays), culture-based method, and biophysical technologies (e.g., biosensors and nanosensors) for environmental contamination factors. According to the different levels of sophistication of various analytical techniques and the information they can provide (either fine fingerprint, highly accurate quantification, semiquantification, qualitative detection, or fast screening), we will comment on how they may be used as complementary tools, as well as their potential and gaps toward current demand of real-time, online, and/or onsite detection.

For the first time, electroplex emission is utilized to enhance the performance of nondoped blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). By decorating the twisted blue-emitting platform and adjusting the electronic structure, three molecules of 3Cz-Ph-CN, 3Cz-mPh-CN, and 3Ph-Cz-CN with a donor-acceptor structure are synthesized and investigated. When external voltage is applied, electroplex emission, which contributes to the emission performance of OLED, can be realized at the interface between the emitting layer and the electron-transporting layer. Accordingly, high external quantum efficiency of 18.1% can be achieved, while the emission wavelength of the device can be controlled in the blue region. Our results provide the possibility to enhance the performance of OLED through electroplex emission, in addition to the generally investigated thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Excitedly, when 3Ph-Cz-CN is used as host material in orange-emitting phosphorous OLEDs (PO-01 as the dopant), unprecedented high external quantum efficiency of 27.4% can also be achieved.

Cell migration plays a pivotal role in many pathological and physiological processes. So far, most of the studies have been focused on 2-dimensional cell adhesion and migration. Herein, the migration behaviors of cell spheroids in 3D hydrogels obtained by polymerization of methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HA-MA) and fibrinogen (Fg) with different ratios were studied. The Fg could be released to the medium gradually along with time prolongation, achieving the dynamic change of hydrogel structures and properties. Three types of cell spheroids, i.e., endothelial cell (EC), smooth muscle cell (SMC), and EC-SMC spheroids, were prepared with 10,000 cells in each, whose diameters were about 343, 108, and 224  μm, respectively. The composite hydrogels with an intermediate ratio of Fg allowed the fastest 3D migration of cell spheroids. The ECs-SMCs migrated longest up to 3200  μm at day 14, whereas the SMC spheroids migrated slowest with a distance of only ~400  μm at the same period of time. The addition of free RGD or anti-CD44 could significantly reduce the migration distance, revealing that the cell-substrate interactions take the major roles and the migration is mesenchymal dependent. Moreover, addition of anti-N-cadherin and MMP inhibitors also slowed down the migration rate, demonstrating that the degradation of hydrogels and cell-cell interactions are also largely involved in the cell migration. RT-PCR measurement showed that expression of genes related to cell adhesion and antiapoptosis, and angiogenesis was all upregulated in the EC-SMC spheroids than single EC or SMC spheroids, suggesting that the use of composite cell spheroids is more promising to promote cell-substrate interactions and maintenance of cell functions.
