An innovative technical route consisting of sintering and pyrometallurgical processing technique was proposed to extract iron from an iron concentrate of red mud. The results show that under the following optimal sintering conditions for high-alumina iron concentrate, including fuel ratio of 12%, moisture content of 18.5%-19.0%, and basicity (R2) of approximately 4.85 (with quicklime as flux), the obtained sinter has its metallurgical properties meet the requirements of small-scale smelting equipment. To improve the fluidity of final high-alumina slag from blast furnace smelting, 17% calcium oxide is added for modification, leading to the viscosity of the slag down to 0.61 Pa·s at 1 450 ℃. As a result, an efficient slag-iron separation can be actualized. Such slag can be used to prepare premelted slag or synthetic slag. Compared with conventional technique for iron recovery from red mud, this process is characterized by a short flow, low cost and large processing capacity. This research provides a theoretical basis for resource utilization of red mud by using solid waste smelting furnaces and laboratory-scale blast furnaces.
