This article talks about the public communication of science and technology in from the perspective of culture. The author considers the continuous development of scientific culture to be a crucial component in the evolution and innovation of national culture. The author discusses how to foster the ever-renewing scientific culture from three perspectives: traditional culture and communication of science and technology, cultural connotation of science and technology communication, evaluation system of scientific literacy.
Purpose and significance of promoting the development of theory research for science popularization and building up resource ptatform of research for science popularization are discussed in process of actualizing the “Outline of National Action Scheme of Scientific Literacy for All Chinese Citizens”. The measures and methods in process of building up resource platform of research for science popularization put forward by China Research Institute for Science Popularization are also presented in this paper.
At the 2005 PCST Working Symposium held in Beijing, the issue of youth science and technology communication has won wide concerns of the attending scholars. Giving a throughout review of the presented papers, this article tries to reveal the plight of youth science and technology communication, namely, the declined interest of youth in science and technology, give an analysis of the causes that lead to this plight and the strategies being taken to deal with it, which will shed a light on the action of youth science and technology communication in China.
The science communication in this article refers to the diffusion of science information in a correct, intensive, deep, fast and effective way. To realize science popularization and make people intelligent is the aim of science communication. In this article, the science communication to be discussed is under the domain of mass media, not including the natural science teaching of formal education in the school. From the perspective of science and media, science writers, science writing, communication of science information and scientists, this article argues how important is the problem of science communication in Taiwan.
Based on the summary of the works on “humanism studies” of chinese scholars in recent one hundred years, this paper explains the connotation of “humanistic spirit” and the relationship between natural sciences and humane studies, discusses the methods and skills to embody humanistic spirit in popular science writing, and quoated in particular the writing examples of the famous modern popular science writers to support its points.
Through argumentation we can obtain the following three viewpoints from the paper: (1) As early as at the beginning of 20th century, scholars entered into the subject of science and humaneness and put forth many important works; (2) Since 1930s, the works of the famous popular science writers in China reflecfed the humanistic spirit; (3) Spreading science and technology, if the popular science works can make readers realize the human value and dignity, as well as “the principle of being a human,” that means they basically show the combinafion of the spirit of science and humanism.
The term ‘public understanding of science (PUS)’ considers the relationship of science and society with a double focus. On the one hand it refers to a variety of activities that engage the public with science. This takes at times the character of a social movement, involving actors, resources, and a growing repertoire of activities. It is on the other hand a growing field of empirical social research. This paper will trace developments in the latter through three phases, which are associated with a change in language: from science literacy until the 1980s, to public understanding of science from the 1980s into the 1990s, and science and society since the 1990s. Naming matters here. Each period is associated with a particular diagnosis of the problems in the relationship between science and society, particular research questions and preferred intervention strategies, and each period displays a rhetoric of ‘progress’ over the previous one. Comparing the three ‘paradigms’, I will ask the question: is there any progress in this field of research?
Originated in 1884, Dianshizhai Pictorial, which made pictures with novel and delectable news, supplemented with explanations in words, initiated the pictorial press of the late Qing Dynasty. Among all of the over 4 600 pictures, 280 ones ware related to science and technology, most of which were about western new technologies involving train, ship, submarine, fire balloon, and telegraph, etc. Compared with the other newspapers, Dianshizhai Pictorial contained more information, and thus a more intuitionistic result was generated in transmission. At the same time, Dianshizhai Pictorial was also the reflection of Chinese peeples attitudes towards the western science and technology transmission into China: on one hand, it reflected the acceptance and recognition of Chinese people, e.g. on the issues of medical operations and photography; on the other hand, it reflected the repulsion and Sino-Western cultural conflicts, e.g. the idees of railways destroying geomantic omen, and rumors that the spirits of the dead were used to send telegraph, etc. On account of the peculiar position that Dianshizhai Pictorial occupied, its value in the studies on history of science and technology as well as communication of science and technology stands to reason.
