Popular Science Monthly will celebrate its 40 years anniversary. It grew out of Taiwan Shin Sheng Daily News and Science Weekly for High School Students. This essay stresses its ideal, style and practice with looking back its origin, founding in US and publishing in Taiwan, and challenges afterwards. It also discussed some difficulties which science community are facing.
Popular Science Monthly has been published for more than 40 years, with starting its publication in January, 1970. On the occasion of Popular Science Monthly’s 40 years anniversary, this paper reviews its several issues in terms of starting time, elitism, science writing items on the agenda, and organization work of science community. Some ideas on historical positioning of Popular Science Monthly are put forwarded as well.
This study is about the first comprehensive popular science magazine in Taiwan: Everybody’s Science Monthly, from 1951 to 1974. It focuses on exploring the changing of the Everybody’s Science Monthly, including its personnel, location, editorial committee and contents.
Watching TV and reading newspapers have always been the important ways to obtain science and technology information for the masses in recent years. Understanding scientific news in newspapers and TV programs is the basic requirement for the masses. By finding out the recent changes of modern physics knowledge on TV and in newspapers in content and quantity, we can know social basic requirements of scientific literacy for the citizens. It is also helpful in constructing up-to-date modern physics curriculum as well as popular science resources.
First, a comprehensive understanding and major problems of infrastructure for popularization of science and technology are discussed; then it tries to find out the reasons of the problems; finally, the suggestions are proposed.
As a world-class palaeobotanist and geologist, Chinese academician Prof. Li Xingxue (Lee Hsing-Hsüeh) has contributed a lot to national science popularization apart from his academic achievement in geosciences. A case study of behavior deletion in science communication suggests that public identity crisis in geography is the physical and mental suffering from geographical behavior deletion when facing public. The behavior deletion in geography lead to dissatisfy every kind of social group’s requirement. There are some main approaches to get out of the public geographical crisis, including grasping “regional” dimension and the research of scale conversion; relying on the preponderant heritage coming from “quantitative revolution”; and adopting or carrying out some necessary behavioral measures.
At present, there is no a uniform or universally accepted definition about innovative exhibits, nor the assessment standards in China or other countries. This article explores the understanding of innovative exhibits from the perspective of R&D process. Innovation is a process. In China, only innovation is successful, it can be called innovation. It, taking an example of the Exploratorium in the U.S., states that exhibits innovation is a perpetual work in progress; then analyzes the current status of exhibits innovation in science and technology museums in China, which pay little attention to understanding of R&D cycle and judging an innovative exhibit in inappropriate time. Finally, it put forward some proposals in promoting innovative ways about exhibits, they are emphasis on renovation, strengthening the management of the whole process of the exhibit development cycle, establishing the risk awareness and enhancing exhibit researchers’ expertise.
According to the latest ideas for science education and the practice of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, we try to construct the model of three dimensional science education goals. The model circles the exhibits as a center, using the graphics, cartoons, models and objects to show the scientific principle; and expand the scientific knowledge by three approaches of “the process of exploring science”, “the application of science knowledge”, “the fun of playing with science”. This model shows the transformation of science education goals, from linearity to being stereoscopic. This is a creative exploration for the science education.
