China is now at a critical stage for constructing an innovation-oriented nation. Therefore, facilitating the public to understand, support, and participate in sci-tech innovation, and helping them learn more scientific knowledge is the central task for the undertaking of science popularization. With the assistance from the Chinese embassy, we have carried out survey research on science popularization in a number of developed countries. Based on the research findings, this paper introduces the current science popularization activities in developed countries, summarizes the development trend, and puts forward suggestions for popular science development in China.
According to Science Popularization Talent Development Plan (2010-2020) of China Association for Science and Technology, a moderate team of science popularization talents by 2020 is to be cultivated in China, with the number of such talents doubling the figure of 2010. The cultivation of science popularization talents need to strengthen their science communication capacities. In this aspect, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Columbia University of the United States have made significant contributions. This paper will summarize MIT’s experience as well as the practices of other universities, and what some of Chinese universities can learn from their counterparts.
Chinese original science fiction has made great progress. In recent years, with the large scale import of western books, films and TV productions on science fiction, Chinese science fiction has found its own way. Chinese cultural gives both chance and challenge to the development of Chinese original science fiction. The development trend has or will become a social focus. Generally speaking, the development of literature is influenced by many factors. This paper tries to find out the main causes which restrict the development of Chinese science fiction, and provide theoretical reference for the prosperity of Chinese science fiction.
This article aims to focus on the views of science and technology museums and foundations. It attempts to compare the characteristics of organizations, the models of operation, and the advantages between science and technology museums and foundations. Furthermore, this article analyzes the effect that foundations help and work on the sustainable development of science and technology museums.
There were too many scientific journals in the late nineteenth century like the magazine Nature. The well-known periodical was initiated during that time. It is shown that Nature succeeded and is the seldom survived scientific periodical. However, by analyzing historical literature, it shows that some other related magazines are still memoriable such as Knowledge. Both of the content and the objectives it represented embodied the general public’s needs and interests and thus more popular than the Nature in that time. The former had accompanied and confronted with latter until it died out.
The paper discussed the science education modeling for the youngsters in the earthquake-stricken area by analyzing the activities of science and technology education, and further suggested the effective science education methods. It proposed a new model of science and technology education for the earthquake-stricken area: mental health—mental health improving—science process experience—thinking elicitation—leading youngsters growing up.
