This article analyses the famous mathematics writer Martin Gardner and his Mathematical Games column in Scientific American. It is found that the success of the column is owed to Martin Gardner's gift and enthusiasm. Gerald Piel, the former publisher of Scientific American is a judge of talents, who found optimism in Gardner and foresaw the future of the column.
