Public understanding of air pollution alludes to a series of psychological responses to air pollution from the general public, including how the atmospheric environment is perceived, what attitudes they have towards pollution, and how people assess it, etc. The issue stems from the public’s reaction to the residents’ complaint about the smoke nuisance. While at the present times, the research on the public understanding of air pollution facilitates the potential prediction of public acceptance of the pollution control measures and provides public data support to the development of environmental management and education. The paper reviews recent work in the field of public understanding research, such as pollution nuisance, environmental psychology and risk perception, and also traces back to its root of environment history. The paper concludes itself by emphasizing the great significance of public understanding as public opinions in environmental management and education.
