Atopic dermatitis is an immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease with a high recurrence rate. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, it falls within the categories of "Siwan Feng" ("four-bend wind"), "Jinyin Chuang" ("soaking sore"), and "Nai Xuan" ("milk eczema"). Due to the risks to patient health associated with long-term use and the high cost of Western medicines, choosing treatment options has become challenging. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine compound formulations have gained clinical attention due to their advantages such as causal treatment, regulation of constitution, and reduction of recurrence, showing great potential in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Therefore, this article discusses the etiology and pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis in TCM and modern medical theory, the mechanism of TCM compound preparations for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, as well as the summary and outlook, aiming to provide a reference for the clinical treatment of atopic dermatitis.
