In order to study the high-temperature and high-pressure sintering of binderless tungsten carbide (WC), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, universal testing machine, and microhardness tester among others were adopted to characterize the phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of the WC samples. The results show that the relative density, hardness and fracture toughness of the samples increase as the sintering temperature rises. It is found that WC sample prepared by sintering at 1 500 ℃ can exhibit excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, with relative density of 99.5%, hardness of 2 885HV, and fracture toughness of 9.50 MPa·m1/2.

研究了无黏结相碳化钨材料的高温高压烧结,利用X射线衍射仪、扫描电镜、万能试验机、显微硬度计等分别对高温高压烧结样品进行了物相组成、显微结构和力学性能表征。结果表明:样品相对密度、硬度和断裂韧性均随着烧结温度升高而升高,烧结温度1 500 ℃制备的碳化钨材料具有优异的综合力学性能,相对密度99.5%、硬度2 885HV、断裂韧性9.50 MPa·m1/2

In order to study the high-temperature and high-pressure sintering of binderless tungsten carbide (WC), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, universal testing machine, and microhardness tester among others were adopted to characterize the phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of the WC samples. The results show that the relative density, hardness and fracture toughness of the samples increase as the sintering temperature rises. It is found that WC sample prepared by sintering at 1 500 ℃ can exhibit excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, with relative density of 99.5%, hardness of 2 885HV, and fracture toughness of 9.50 MPa·m1/2.

碳化钨-钴(WC-Co)硬质合金具有高硬度、高耐热性、高韧性、高强度以及良好的耐磨性,被广泛应用于生产切削工具、精密模具和耐磨损零部件等[1-2]。传统硬质合金在耐腐蚀性和高温硬度方面存在一些弱点,特别是黏结相(通常为钴)容易受腐蚀、软化和磨损影响,导致产品工作精度下降和使用寿命缩短[3-4]。因此,许多学者开始研发无黏结相碳化钨材料[5-6]。无黏结相WC是指含有极少(小于0.5%)或不含金属黏结相的WC材料。在没有黏结相的情况下,通过传统烧结方法如真空烧结、液相烧结、SPS烧结等来获得致密WC材料非常困难[7]。高温高压烧结法在材料合成中应用广泛,其超高等静压力和短合成时间使其成为制备无黏结相WC材料的重要手段[8-11],因此,本文提出了一种在高温高压(HPHT)下烧结无黏结相WC的新方法,研究了HPHT对无黏结相WC显微结构和力学性能的影响,可为开发具有优异性能的无黏结相WC材料提供新的工艺路径。
3种碳化钨粉末均购自上海阿拉丁生化科技股份有限公司,纯度99.9%,O质量分数0.01%,平均粒径分别为0.8、2.0、5.0 μm。
将粒径分别为0.8、2.0、5.0 μm的碳化钨粉末按质量比3∶5∶2配比后倒入硬质合金罐,采用直径5 mm的硬质合金磨球与无水乙醇对粉末进行球磨(球料比5∶1),并采用行星式球磨机进行混料处理(250 r/min×12 h);然后经真空干燥,再将粉末依次经玛瑙研钵精细分散及钼杯模具冷等静压(压力200 MPa,保压120 s),最终成型为Φ20 mm×15 mm标准圆柱坯体。最后,将成型后的圆柱坯体装入叶蜡石模具中,使用六面顶压机进行高温高压烧结。烧结压力固定为5 GPa,保温时间固定为10 min,烧结温度为变量。
烧结后的样品经多级金刚石悬浮液(粒度梯度0.5~2.5 μm)金相抛光处理后,获得Ra≤1 μm的表面粗糙度,满足SEM分析及维氏硬度测试的预处理要求。采用PANalytical X'Pert PRO型X射线衍射仪检测烧结样品的物相组成。采用S4800扫描电镜观察样品的显微结构。用阿基米德法测定样品相对密度。然后用VH-5维氏硬度计测试抛光样品的维氏硬度,施加载荷为98 N,保压时间15 s,最后采用维氏压痕裂纹长度计算断裂韧性。
图1为不同烧结温度下保温10 min的无黏结相碳化钨样品的XRD图谱。从图1可以看出,本试验制备的样品中并未出现其他杂质相,样品均由WC相组成。文献[3]和文献[6]通过其他合成方法对纯WC粉末进行烧结后,在烧结产物中检测出少量W2C相,这是因为WC粉末颗粒表面往往会吸附空气并形成氧化膜。在高温下,氧气或氧化物会还原WC中的碳,导致WC的成分偏离相平衡点而形成W2C相。本试验所得烧结样品纯度较高,表明高压可以有效抑制杂相的形成,防止外来杂质的引入,对维持无黏结相碳化钨样品的物相纯净度具有重要作用。
不同烧结温度下保温10 min的无黏结相碳化钨样品的断裂微观结构如图2所示。烧结后样品中大颗粒WC基本保持初始WC的粉末尺寸,小颗粒WC部分长大,颗粒均匀分布且颗粒间结合效果较好,大部分晶粒间通过机械连接实现结合。1 300 ℃和1 400 ℃下所得烧结样品中发现少量孔洞和裂缝(如图中椭圆所示),且1 450 ℃样品中存在穿晶断裂的现象(如图中矩形框所示)。随着温度从1 400 ℃升高到1 500 ℃,WC晶粒的形状变得更加规则。这种规则形状是由晶粒生长引起的。晶粒间的结合变得更加牢固,并且孔隙减少了。1 500 ℃烧结时,WC晶粒形状更加规则,气孔更少,晶粒更圆滑,表明烧结样品接近完全致密化状态。
图3为保温时间10 min、压力5 GPa条件下不同烧结样品的相对密度。随着烧结温度从1 300 ℃增至1 500 ℃,样品相对密度呈现逐渐增加的趋势。这是由于在低烧结温度下,晶粒塑性流动较慢,样品中颗粒孔隙间的结合较慢,且碳化钨颗粒间的晶界形成需要更长的时间。随着温度升高,颗粒塑性流动加速,晶界形成所需时间变短,同时在高温下晶粒生长受到更强烈的影响,晶粒长大速度加快,烧结样品致密性更好。烧结温度高于1 450 ℃后,样品已接近完全致密化,其相对密度增幅趋缓。在这个阶段,WC颗粒间隙减少,且材料内部结构相对稳定,说明烧结温度对WC晶粒的尺寸和烧结状态具有重要影响,可以通过控制烧结温度来控制晶粒的生长和均匀性。
图4为烧结样品维氏硬度及断裂韧性与烧结温度的关系。每个烧结样品都压制了5个维氏硬度压痕,并根据其平均值和标准偏差计算出最终的硬度值,同时本研究通过维氏硬度压痕裂纹长度测定了样品的断裂韧性。结果表明,烧结温度对材料硬度和断裂韧性有显著影响。随着烧结温度升高,烧结样品相对密度增大,相对密度高的样品表现出更高的硬度和断裂韧性。试验样品中,最大维氏硬度为2 885HV,最大断裂韧性为9.5 MPa·m1/2。结合显微结构和力学性能数据,不同温度下合成样品性能不同的原因可能是:①在高压下晶粒长大可以提高材料的相对密度,进一步增强材料韧性,晶粒粗化通过增加晶界总面积有效抑制位错运动和裂纹扩展,从而显著提升材料断裂韧性;②较大的晶粒结构有助于改善材料硬度,较大的晶粒通常可以形成更完整、更规整的结构,降低位错运动的难度,从而提高材料硬度。另外,在高温高压条件下,晶粒长大可能还会促进晶界结构优化,有利于提高材料力学性能。
表1为本实验所得样品与加黏结剂产品的性能对比。由表1可知,本实验合成的无黏结相碳化钨材料有很好的力学性能。高温高压烧结有利于晶粒间的结合,并且能减少孔隙、实现显微结构致密化,使无黏结相碳化钨样品表现出更高的显微硬度和断裂韧性。
1)在1500 ℃、5 GPa的高温高压条件下烧结10 min,获得的无黏结相碳化钨表现出优异的性能,最高硬度达到了2 885HV,断裂韧性9.50 MPa·m1/2
2)在实验范围内,随着烧结温度升高,烧结样品相对密度、硬度和断裂韧性均增大。
3)高温高压烧结有利于晶粒间的结合,并且能减少孔隙、实现显微结构致密化,使样品具有更高的显微硬度和断裂韧性。
