From 1860s to 1890s, China experienced a period called westernization movement. In this period, the knowledge of modern times’ science and technology was gradually passed into China and accepted by the Chinese. The Englishman John Fryer had a great contribution to the spreading and popularizing the knowledge of western science and technology in the late years of Qing Dynasty. He established the journal Chinese Scientific Magazine in 1876, which was the earliest journal of popular science in the modern times of China. It introduced the western science and technology by special content and founded a base for the knowledge popularizing in China. This paper introduces Fryer and Chinese Scienctific Magazine from the aspect of science popularization, analyzes and comments on the situation of science popularization in the late years of Qing Dynasty.

19世纪60年代到90年代的中国，经历了一个历史上被称为“洋务运动”的时期。在此期间，西方近代科技知识陆续传入中国，逐渐被中国人所接受。西方科技在中国晚清时代的传播与普及过程中，英国人傅兰雅功不可没。他于1876年创办了我国近代最早的科普期刊——《格致汇编》，以其独特的内容介绍了西方的科技知识，为科学在中国的普及打下了基础。本文将从科学普及的角度来介绍傅兰雅及其创办的《格致汇编》，并对晚清时期中国科学普及状况做简要的分析与述评。
