Public attitudes toward science constitute a key research focus in the field of science popularization. This study develops a scale for measuring public attitudes toward science based on psychological assumptions and validates it through the Rasch Model,examining its unidimensionality,local independence,structural validity,item fit,person fit,and rating scale functioning. The validated scale effectively measures the construct of“public attitudes toward science”and can be applied in subsequent research. Additionally,the Rasch Model proves to be a valuable supplementary tool for assessing the micro-level impacts of science popularization.

公众科学态度是科普领域的重要议题。本文以心理学假设为基础编制公众科学态度的量表,并用Rasch模型对量表进行单维性检验、局部独立性检验、结构分析、试题项目及被试拟合分析、评定尺度分析。经检验,本文量表可测量公众科学态度,并用于其他延伸性研究。此外,Rasch模型还可作为微观科普效果评估方法的补充。

Public attitudes toward science constitute a key research focus in the field of science popularization. This study develops a scale for measuring public attitudes toward science based on psychological assumptions and validates it through the Rasch Model,examining its unidimensionality,local independence,structural validity,item fit,person fit,and rating scale functioning. The validated scale effectively measures the construct of“public attitudes toward science”and can be applied in subsequent research. Additionally,the Rasch Model proves to be a valuable supplementary tool for assessing the micro-level impacts of science popularization.

缺失模型(Deficit Model)认为公众因“无知”而致“猜忌”。但缺失模型作为一种线性单向性模型备受批判,学界转而关注以公众科学态度为重点的公众理解科学,乃至公众参与科学。从科普实践工作与科普研究层面上而言,公众科学态度仍极具讨论价值。实践表明,公众科学态度影响着科研资助、科技成果转化等一系列问题。在理论研究方面,公众参与科学本身夹杂着科学性与民主性的协商。科学技术革命日新月异,而我国公众科学素质仍处在较低水平。就现实而言,“谁参与”“为何参与”“如何参与”等问题仍处于深刻探讨之中。因此,公众科学态度是当前实践工作与理论研究的重要议题。
尽管公众科学态度整体偏向积极,但近年来争议性科学议题逐渐浮现,公众对科学呈现出期待与恐惧交织的态度,使得相关研究呈现出紧迫性。但当前对“公众科学态度”这一变量的测量尚存争议,需先厘清变量,方可在此基础上进行深入研究。
从评估工具来看,社会科学领域内常见将李克特量表(Likert scale)的定序数据作为定距数据进行推论统计的错误,予非线性数据以线性特征。因而,本文将运用Rasch模型转化数据类型,以减少变量测量误差。
科学是近代的产物,19世纪前,科学以依附于宗教、自然哲学的形式存在。尽管科学划界问题经历了可确证、可证伪乃至解构的变迁,但科学作为知识机器以其“铁律”[1]广泛影响着社会。从狭义上而言,科学指系统化的自然科学。
现代自然科学的发展日新月异,在极大程度上改善了公众生活水平,但随之而来的生态、伦理等外在问题日渐凸显,“勾勒姆”(Golem)、“李森科主义”(Lysenkoism)等内在问题发人深省。科学被赋予的确定性逐渐消弭,取而代之的是不确定性。媒体环境更迭,媒体生产逻辑与科学知识生产规范的背离触发了媒介化风险,成为科学不确定性的放大器[2]。而公众科学态度呈现摇摆的倾向,尤其体现在对争议性科学议题的态度上,涉及科学知识、科学建制、科学共同体、科学的社会影响等方方面面。
19世纪60年代,赫伯特·斯宾塞(Herbert Spencer)和亚历山大·培因(Alexander Bain)将态度引入心理学领域用以指称行动准备的内心阶段[3]。詹姆斯·M.奥尔森(James M.Olson)和马克·P.赞纳(Mark P. Zanna)认为态度由认知(cognition)、感觉(affect)、行为倾向(behavior tendency)三种成分构成[4]。而“公众科学态度”这一概念还未形成得到普遍认可的定义。目前国内外学界主要从细分对象着手构建变量指标体系,相关研究主要聚焦在以下三个方面。
其一,公众对科学态度的评估。国内代表性评估如中国公民科学素质调查将公民科学态度分为三个维度:公民对科技的感兴趣程度、公民对科技的态度与看法、公民对科学家的认知看法[4]。此外,中国科学技术指标中将公民对科学技术的态度降维为公民对科学技术信息的感兴趣程度、公民对科学技术的看法、公民对公共科技议题的看法三个二级指标[5]
国外的代表性调查有欧洲晴雨表(Eurobarometer)、美国科学指标(Science Indicators)[6]、美国国家科学基金(National Science Foundation,NSF)调查[7-8]、米勒(J·D.Miller)公众科学素养测量[9]、美国民意调查等。如欧洲晴雨表认为公众科学态度包含公众对科学、科学的社会影响、科学共同体、科技政策等方面的兴趣、认知与评价[10-11]。美国民意调查则将科学家的职业威望程度、公众信任科学家的程度、公众对科学的利弊感知、公众对科学发展的认知等多方面纳入变量范畴[12]
其二,公众对争议性科学技术的态度。如公众对转基因[13]、5G技术[14]、核能[15]等技术的态度。
其三,影响公众对科学的态度的因素。如科学知识[1216-17]、大众媒体[18]、社会结构因素、社会文化观念[19]等因素对公众态度的影响。这两类研究建立在对“公众对科学的态度”这一变量的测量上,但由于概念界定不清、指标体系不明确、试题项目数量少等问题,测量准确性不及代表性调查。
公众科学态度的指标体系是变量测量与延伸性研究的基础所在。尽管各量表所涉指标不尽相同,但基本上围绕科学、科学共同体、科技政策、科技应用、科学的社会影响等方面展开。当前研究的指标体系较少从心理学范畴出发,也较少从态度这一基本单位着手构建,因而忽视了态度层次的多元性。综上,本文将公众科学态度定义为公众基于科学各方面现状所形成的一种对科学的认知取向、情感倾向、行为意向的心理结构。
测量公众科学态度时,既往研究通常将其置于态度二元论的框架之下,以积极、消极二元表述划分试题项目倾向。同时采用李克特量表衡量公众态度倾向程度,结果以百分比例或数值的形式呈现,且相关研究尚未划定阈值以区分公众科学态度,如美国科学指标、欧洲晴雨表、中国公民科学素质调查等。
除此之外,既往研究所呈现的数据形式难以满足延伸性研究需求,百分比例的结果无法实现试题项目间累加累减的计算,难以形成对变量的整体测量。而定序数据并无数值意义,不可进行累加累减。此外,由于各量表采用的李克特量表尺度不同,相关结果难以进行纵横向比较。
因此,本文将基于Rasch模型对变量数据进行多次迭代直至收敛以取得较为精确的数值。经过Rasch模型的转化,变量数据由定序数据转为定距数据,对变量的整体倾向程度以线性形式呈现。
本文将进行预测量、正式测量两轮测量。测量前将量表指标体系进行细化,共计11个试题项目。预测阶段共抽取31人,其中男性17人、女性14人;小学学历3人、初中学历16人、高中学历6人、大学学历6人;16~35周岁12人、36~60周岁11人、60周岁以上8人。
正式测量阶段采用多阶段抽样,共抽取300人,对浙江省金华市、河南省驻马店市、河南省焦作市、新疆维吾尔自治区喀什市的被测对象进行调查,其中每市抽选一个社区、一个村,并以家庭为单位进行整群抽样。测量对象为16岁以上的公民,其中男性153人、女性147人;小学学历27人、初中学历124人、高中学历72人、大学学历77人;16~35周岁113人、36~60周岁150人、60周岁以上37人。
本文将公众科学态度这一潜在变量进行降维。以心理学假设为理论基础,考察公众对科学的认知取向、情感倾向、行为意向三个层面。首先,认知取向不等同于认知,认知取向指对某客体赞同与否的评价性看法等,而并非公众对科学认知的能力,即正确作答科学试题项目的能力。其次,情绪不等同于情感,两者作为同一心理现象的不同层次,情感可由情绪表达,情绪的累积式变化也会影响情感的转变。此外,行为意向不等同于行为,行为意向是主体付诸某行为的意愿等。根据心理学假设,“态度—行为”具有一致性倾向,即公众科学态度与公众对科学采取的行为有内在一致性。
公众科学态度具体指标以公众科学素养评估、公众调查等相关测量为基础,如中国科学技术指标、欧洲晴雨表、美国国家科学基金、美国科学指标、美国民意调查等。部分调查将“公众从事科学相关职业”纳入测量,但这一指标具有年龄局限性,从普遍性的角度考量将这一指标剔除。而伴随着风险社会的显现,公众科学态度这一变量也需考虑公众对科学社会性勾连的认知[20]。此外,本文将公众传播科学的意向、参与科学决策的意向[21]、运用科学的意向[22]等行为意向纳入指标。
综上,公众科学态度的指标体系如表1所示,共包含11项指标。本文将以核电技术为例,测量时将指标体系进一步具象化。
经典测量理论(Classical Test Theory,CTT)、概化理论(Generalizability Theory,GT)、项目反应理论(Item Response Theory,IRT)、Rasch模型是常见的测量理论。CTT作为早期测量理论,具有简单易操作的特点,是一种中观测量理论;GT则改进了CTT理论中误差不可分解的缺陷,注重结论的概化,属于宏观测量理论;IRT与Rasch模型则均为微观测量理论,可对试题项目、被试水平进行细致分析。尽管同为微观测量模型,但IRT与Rasch模型也有着本质不同,IRT是一种模型拟合数据的理论,而Rasch模型是一种数据拟合模型的理论[23-24]
格奥尔格·拉希(Georg Rasch)于1960年提出Rasch测量(Rasch Measurement)。其前提假设为,被试作答试题项目满足一种数学关系,即被试能力越强,则越可能正确作答较难试题项目;试题项目越难,则被试越难以正确作答。当被试能力水平与试题项目难度相当时,被试正确作答该试题项目的概率是50%。当被试能力水平高于试题项目水平时,被试正确作答该试题项目的概率将大于50%,反之则低于50%[25],且Rasch模型参数间保持相对独立性,即被试能力水平与试题项目难度互不影响。
Rasch测量建立在概率论基础之上,能力为Bn的被试n正确作答难度为Di的试题项目i的概率为P,公式如下:
已知概率P,Rasch测量将利用概率P进一步假设可能性(odds)模型,并利用自然对数进一步优化,可得Rasch模型(Rasch Model)公式:
Rasch模型作为“尺子的尺子”,不仅仅在转化定序数据上有良好的表现,对“测量”本身的纠正也是Rasch模型最大的优势。Rasch模型通过总体统计值对量表信度(Reliability)、区分度(Separation)、试题总体拟合度、被试总体拟合度进行评估,考察数据对模型的整体拟合情况。Rasch模型需满足单维性假设,确保量表中所有指标均为测量同一潜在变量;此外,可以通过试题项目拟合度分析进一步检验试题项目效度;Rasch模型假设各试题项目之间为相互独立,即局部独立性;借助怀特图(Wright map)可考察量表中各试题项目的难度分布情况、被试能力水平分布情况,将过度重合的试题项目予以修改;Rasch模型需检验试题项目的选项设置情况,如若存在多余选项可进行选项合并。基于量表的多项检验,使得测量过程被不断优化,以便获取相对精准的数据。
预测量表共计11项试题项目,分别对应11项指标。本文应用量表时,将以核电技术为例,采用李克特四级量表。如“我认为核电技术未来发展整体利大于弊”对应指标“公众对科学创新发展的风险与收益感知”,“我愿意主动了解核电技术”对应指标“公众对科学的认知意愿”,“我尊重、信任核电技术专家”对应指标“公众对科学家身份的认同与信任”等。
将预测数据录入Winsteps 3.72.3进行处理。预测阶段量表总体统计值良好,基本满足单维性假设,评定尺度拟合良好。从局部独立性假设来看,Item6与Item7之间的残差相关系数达0.61,超出临界值范围。从怀特图中可知,预测阶段Item8与Item10难度重合。此外,在试题项目拟合方面,Item1的Infit MNSQ、Outfit MNSQ值分别为2.12、2.20,点—测量相关系数为0.38,均落在临界值之外。被试拟合不良共计2人,将该数据删除后,重新测量量表总体统计值。删除异常被试后,各部分指标数值有所优化,但变化较为微弱,考察综合情况后对异常数据予以保留。
除部分试题项目外,量表整体表现良好。根据预测阶段数据,拟对量表中Item7、Item8进行修改。其中Item7为“我对我国核电安全管理制度有信心”,对应指标“公众对科学管理体系的认同与信任”;Item8为“我为国家资助核电技术感到高兴”,对应指标“公众对科研资助的情感”。预测阶段测试人数较少,使得部分指标情况欠佳,将结合正式测量阶段数据进一步考察。
Rasch模型量表总体统计值中需考察区分度、信度、Infit、Outfit。区分度是衡量试题项目差异、被试个体能力差异的重要指标,信度则是检验量表可信程度的指标。
Infit、Outfit是Rasch模型中检测数据是否拟合模型的关键值,其中Infit是加权拟合值,Outfit是非加权拟合值;MNSQ指均方统计值,ZSTD指显著性检验值。Infit主要检测被试能力与试题项目难度相近时的表现,该部分数据产生较大方差;Outfit则对离估计值更远的被试或试题项目更敏感,如对高能力被试错误作答低难度试题项目的情况予以反应,该部分数据产生较大残差。一般情况下,优先考察Outfit,其次考察Infit;优先考察MNSQ,其次考察ZSTD。在分级量表中,Infit MNSQ、Outfit MNSQ在0.6~1.4区间可视为拟合良好[26],接近1时最为理想。Infit ZSTD、Outfit ZSTD值在±2.0区间内为合理值[27],接近0时最为理想。
表2所示,被试平均估计值为1.19,试题项目估计值为0.00;被试区分度为1.81,试题项目区分度为10.89;被试信度为0.77,试题项目信度为0.99。被试与试题项目的Infit MNSQ值均为0.99,Outfit MNSQ值均为0.99;Infit ZSTD值分别为-0.20、-0.10,Outfit ZSTD值分别为-0.20、-0.10,均在合理范围内。
较为常见的单维性检验方法是主成分分析法(Principal Component Analysis,PCA)、探索性因子分析法(Exploratory Factor Analysis,EFA)与验证性因子分析法(Confirmatory Factor Analysis,CFA)。这类检验方法可以通过SPSS等分析工具操作,如探索性因子分析中,第一因素特征根为第二特征根的3~5倍即可认为量表满足单维性假设。但这种检验法并非直接检验Rasch模型的单维性,被质疑效度有限。
目前,基于Rasch模型本身的单维性检验方法为残差主成分分析法(Principal Component Analysis of Residuals,PCAR)。该方法标准如下:其一,由测量解释的原始方差(Raw variance explained by measures)比例至少为40%[28];其二,第一对比中未解释方差(Unexplained variance in 1st contrast)比例小于5%,特征根小于3[29];其三,由测量解释的原始方差比例与第一对比中未解释方差比例比值大于3[30]
表3所示,总体来看量表满足单维性假设。其中由测量解释的原始方差比例的实际值(Empirical)为49.5%,高于临界值40%。此外,由测量解释的原始方差比例与第一对比中未解释方差比例比值为4.85,大于推荐值3。第一对比中未解释方差特征根为2.2,符合低于3.0的标准,其比例达到10.2%,大于理想值5%,但仍处在能接受的15%范围内。因此,整体上量表基本满足了单维性假设。
Rasch模型中,局部独立性假设与单维性假设同等重要,要求被试能力与试题项目之间相互独立,即被试能力水平不受试题项目难度影响。Rasch模型局部独立性通过计算残差间相关性进行测量,若不满足将导致量表信度被过度夸大。已有研究将局部独立性假设的临界值设为±0.2[31],也有研究将临界值设为±0.5[32]或是±0.7[33]
量表局部独立性情况如表4所示,各试题项目间相关系数绝对值在0.24~0.41区间。较预测量阶段的0.38~0.61区间,正式实验阶段的局部独立性指标有所提升,处在±0.5的临界范围内。尽管没有达成±0.2的临界值要求,但整体上满足了Rasch模型的局部独立性假设。预实验阶段Item6与Item7的相关系数达0.61,结合各项指标,正式实验阶段将item7“我对我国核电安全管理制度有信心”修改为“我国核电安全管理制度能充分预防核泄漏”,修改后的试题项目表现良好。
Rasch模型中,怀特图是反映被试能力与试题项目难度的重要图示,在怀特图中被试与试题项目被同时放置于同一刻度下,刻度单位为Logits。怀特图可以考察被试能力与试题项目难度是否分布合理。
图1所示,图示左边为被试能力分布,右边为试题项目难度分布。被试能力越高、试题项目越难则越居上方。从怀特图中可知,整体上被试对核电技术呈现积极的态度,被试水平整体高于试题项目难度,被试能力均值大于试题项目均值1Logits。若在能力水平测试中,该怀特图所展示的结果欠佳,但本次测量的潜在变量是公众科学态度,怀特图所示的均值差距恰恰验证了现阶段我国公众对科学的积极态度[10]。正式测量阶段对item8进行了修改,从怀特图分布情况上来看,修改后item8的难度达到预期效果。
综合看来,量表结构并不算良好,item11与item4之间存在较大空缺。试题项目难度分布存在两处重合。但可从中知悉,被试对核电技术的态度呈现分层的态势,即具有较为积极的认知评价、情感态度,但认知兴趣、传播意向、参与意向却极低。
试题项目及被试的拟合度分析是指实验数据与Rasch模型的拟合程度,上文报告了量表整体的拟合程度,该部分将细化至每一试题项目与被试,利于筛选出拟合不良的试题项目与被试,进一步修改试题项目或删除被试数据。评价标准为Infit、Outfit中的MNSQ、ZSTD值以及点—测量相关系数。该部分MNSQ值的临界值为0.60~1.40,ZSTD值临界值为±2.0。如若MNSQ值达标,则可不报告ZSTD值。而点—测量相关系数的临界范围为0.40~0.80。如表5所示,量表试题项目的拟合情况良好。Infit、Outfit的MNSQ值在0.85~1.19区间,点—测量相关系数(Point-Measure correlation)整体落在0.52~0.66区间内,符合0.40~0.80区间的临界范围。证明各试题项目均符合量表所测量的“公众科学态度”这一潜在变量。
由于量表试题项目数量较少,被试拟合值较为敏感,少量异常作答便可影响被试拟合值。因此,被试Infit MNSQ、Outfit MNSQ值以小于2.0为临界范围[34]。正式测量阶段超出拟合临界值的被试共31人。被试拟合不佳的原因可能在于被试未认真作答、表现不稳定、存在干扰因素等。将异常作答的数据删除后,重新测量量表总体统计值。结果如表6所示,量表中被试Infit MNSQ值由原本的0.99下降为0.97;被试与试题项目的Outfit MNSQ值由0.99、0.99下降为0.98、0.98。被试的信度从原本的0.77上升至0.80。删除被试数据需考察删除后量表各项指标是否有明显改善,或是被试数据确实存在高度异常表现,否则予以保留。删除部分被试数据后,仍会有新的异常被试出现。综上,尽管被试信度有所提升,但其他拟合值有所下降,综合考察情况后决定对异常作答被试数据予以保留。
Rasch模型的基本假设认为,高能力被试正确作答高难度试题项目的概率更高。在李克特量表中表现为高能力被试更有可能选择高等级选项,单个选项被选中的概率应当随着被试能力的提高而呈现单调递增性,即Rasch模型的单调性假设(monotonicity)。
其一,需考察选项被选择的次数(observed count),如若频次低于10,则应当将其合并至邻近选项中。如表7所示,类别标签中1表示“非常不同意”,2表示“不同意”,3表示“同意”,4表示“非常同意”。所有选项均满足最低频次值。
其二,若量表满足模型单调性假设,则平均估计值(average measure)应当为单调递增;同时拟合指标应当小于2.0[35],拟合值过大则认为该选项存在较大误差,应考虑合并至邻近选项。4个选项的平均估计值分别为-2.24、-0.69、1.61、3.93,呈现单调递增,拟合指标均在合理范围内。
其三,相邻选项间临界值(thresholds)的差值应当在1.4~5.0的范围内。相邻选项间临界值指被试从一个选项到另一邻近选项的临界值,是衡量被试作答反应是否与预估一致的重要指标。以本实验所用的李克特四级量表为例,四级量表应当有3个临界值。临界值间差值分别为3.67、4.78,均处合理范围。此外,量表评定尺度分析可结合评分等级结构图进一步判断。如图2所示,各选项都呈现较为明显的峰值,并且各选项间呈现较为均匀的间隔。因此,本测量所采用的李克特四级量表满足了Rasch模型基本假设。
潜在变量经Rasch模型迭代转化为定距数据,得到公众科学态度估计值(person measure),数据以Logits为单位。估计值数值越高,则公众科学态度越积极,反之则越消极,此处数值正负不代表态度方向性。国际测量通常采用相关计算扩展估计值区间,如以0~1 000 Logits区间范围替代原始区间。如表8所示,公众科学态度估计值在-3.70Logits至6.52Logits区间,差值为10.22Logits,呈现极端态度的公众人数较少。结合图1 Rasch模型怀特图所示,公众对核电技术的态度整体上偏向积极,对核电技术、其社会影响、科研资助等方面较为支持。但公众对Item1、Item9、Item11的态度偏向消极,即公众对核电技术缺乏认知兴趣、传播意向、参与意向。因此,未来科普领域相关研究可着眼于提升公众认知兴趣、启动公众传播意向、完善公众参与机制等方面。
Rasch模型已广泛运用于心理学、教育学、医学等领域,主要用于测量如能力水平、科学素养、抑郁症、态度等潜在变量。本文测量的是“公众科学态度”这一潜在变量,在指标体系的构建上考量了心理学假设,并以科普领域现有公民科学素质评估、公众调查为基础形成11项指标。经检验,本文所涉量表符合Rasch模型各项假设,可用于测量公众科学态度。在未来研究中,量表指标细化时可适应具体研究议题变化,如转基因、人工智能等科学议题。
Rasch模型不仅可以校正量表,也可实现数据类型转化。李克特量表产生的数据属于定序数据,不可进行累加累减。通过Rasch模型的转化,定序数据以估计值的形式输出,此时数据为定距类型,可进行推论性统计,应用于延伸性研究。如探究影响公众科学态度的影响因素,可将估计值与其他变量进行相关性分析;微观科普效果评估,考察科普对公众认知、态度[36]、行为产生的影响;公众科学态度横纵向比较等。
