Background

The W-band constitutes a critical atmospheric window in the millimeter-wave spectrum, with significant importance for advanced applications such as high-capacity communications, high-resolution imaging, and high-precision sensing. As essential components within core millimeter-wave transmitter and receiver systems, filters fundamentally determine transceiver performance. However, conventional designs frequently face challenges in simultaneously achieving high electrical performance and favorable manufacturability, representing a key obstacle in contemporary W-band filter development.

Purpose

This work aims to develop a low-loss, low-order, and readily fabricable waveguide quasi-elliptic bandpass filter for the W-band. The goal is to maximize structural simplicity while maintaining high performance, thereby addressing the requirements of next-generation highly integrated transceiver systems.

Methods

The proposed filter employs a novel H-plane offset magnetic coupling configuration, which simplifies the input–output coupling mechanism. Guided by quasi-elliptic filtering theory, transmission zeros are generated on both sides of the passband through the excitation of TE201/TE102 and TE301/TE102 hybrid modes in two respective resonant cavities, resulting in enhanced out-of-band suppression. The filter is implemented in a split-block architecture and fabricated via high-precision computer numerical control (CNC) milling.

Results

Measured results demonstrate an operational passband from 91.5 GHz to 98 GHz, corresponding to a 3 dB fractional bandwidth of 7%, with an in-band insertion loss as low as 0.4 dB and a return loss greater than 15 dB. Except for a slight deviation observed at the upper band edge, the experimental data show strong agreement with simulation, confirming the design’s manufacturability, integration compatibility, and high-frequency performance.

Conclusions

A compact, low-loss W-band quasi-elliptic filter has been successfully realized using only two hybrid-mode cavities. The presented design exhibits notable advantages in terms of fabrication ease, integration suitability, and electrical performance, providing a viable solution for advanced millimeter-wave system applications.

W波段是重要的窗口频段,在高容量通信、高分辨率成像和高精度探测等毫米波领域具有重要前沿应用价值。针对新一代W波段固态高集成收发机系统的应用需求,提出一款低损耗、低阶数、易加工的波导型准椭圆带通滤波器。该滤波器基于2个混合高阶谐振腔,结合偏移磁耦合方法,实现带两个传输零点的4阶准椭圆响应,带外抑制性能良好。主要内容包括:W波段混合高阶模滤波器的结构拓扑设计;混合谐振模式(TE201/TE102和TE301/TE102)与传输零点产生机理与独立性分析;错位偏移磁耦合结构特征;滤波器整体性能优化及其H面分裂式CNC加工等。实测结果表明,该滤波器的有效通带为91.5 GHz至98 GHz,3 dB相对带宽为7%,带内插入损耗低至0.4 dB,回波损耗优于15 dB。除高频边带有少量偏移外,实测结果与仿真结果高度一致,验证了该器件的易加工、易集成与易频率拓展等特点。

W波段是重要的窗口频段,在高容量通信、高分辨率成像和高精度探测等毫米波领域具有重要前沿应用价值。针对新一代W波段固态高集成收发机系统的应用需求,提出一款低损耗、低阶数、易加工的波导型准椭圆带通滤波器。该滤波器基于2个混合高阶谐振腔,结合偏移磁耦合方法,实现带两个传输零点的4阶准椭圆响应,带外抑制性能良好。主要内容包括:W波段混合高阶模滤波器的结构拓扑设计;混合谐振模式(TE201/TE102和TE301/TE102)与传输零点产生机理与独立性分析;错位偏移磁耦合结构特征;滤波器整体性能优化及其H面分裂式CNC加工等。实测结果表明,该滤波器的有效通带为91.5 GHz至98 GHz,3 dB相对带宽为7%,带内插入损耗低至0.4 dB,回波损耗优于15 dB。除高频边带有少量偏移外,实测结果与仿真结果高度一致,验证了该器件的易加工、易集成与易频率拓展等特点。

Background

The W-band constitutes a critical atmospheric window in the millimeter-wave spectrum, with significant importance for advanced applications such as high-capacity communications, high-resolution imaging, and high-precision sensing. As essential components within core millimeter-wave transmitter and receiver systems, filters fundamentally determine transceiver performance. However, conventional designs frequently face challenges in simultaneously achieving high electrical performance and favorable manufacturability, representing a key obstacle in contemporary W-band filter development.

Purpose

This work aims to develop a low-loss, low-order, and readily fabricable waveguide quasi-elliptic bandpass filter for the W-band. The goal is to maximize structural simplicity while maintaining high performance, thereby addressing the requirements of next-generation highly integrated transceiver systems.

Methods

The proposed filter employs a novel H-plane offset magnetic coupling configuration, which simplifies the input–output coupling mechanism. Guided by quasi-elliptic filtering theory, transmission zeros are generated on both sides of the passband through the excitation of TE201/TE102 and TE301/TE102 hybrid modes in two respective resonant cavities, resulting in enhanced out-of-band suppression. The filter is implemented in a split-block architecture and fabricated via high-precision computer numerical control (CNC) milling.

Results

Measured results demonstrate an operational passband from 91.5 GHz to 98 GHz, corresponding to a 3 dB fractional bandwidth of 7%, with an in-band insertion loss as low as 0.4 dB and a return loss greater than 15 dB. Except for a slight deviation observed at the upper band edge, the experimental data show strong agreement with simulation, confirming the design’s manufacturability, integration compatibility, and high-frequency performance.

Conclusions

A compact, low-loss W-band quasi-elliptic filter has been successfully realized using only two hybrid-mode cavities. The presented design exhibits notable advantages in terms of fabrication ease, integration suitability, and electrical performance, providing a viable solution for advanced millimeter-wave system applications.

毫米波与太赫兹频段拥有丰富的频谱资源,其中,W波段(75~110 GHz)作为毫米波与太赫兹频谱的关键过渡窗口,凭借其独特的频段优势,在高容量通信、高分辨率成像和高精度探测等领域具有重要前沿应用价值[1-3]。滤波器作为发射机、接收机等核心电子系统中的关键器件[4],核心功能是通过频率选择特性滤除干扰信号与杂波,进而显著提升系统的目标探测精度与稳定运行性能。因此,针对W波段应用场景,研制兼具低损耗、低阶数、易加工、准椭圆特性的波导型带通滤波器,成为现阶段的研究热点。
在毫米波中,为满足不同系统对性能、尺寸与工艺的要求,多种传输线结构被广泛应用于带通滤波器研究。常见的用于实现毫米波滤波器的传输线结构包括微带线、基片集成波导及矩形波导等。其中传统矩形波导凭借其完全闭合的金属腔体固态结构、低传输损耗、高功率容量、易固态装配等优势,成为该频段(含W波段)器件与系统电路实现的首选传输线方案[5]。在W波段波导型滤波器领域,已经有多款W波段波导滤波器被报道,从实现方法上主要分以下两类:基于基模谐振器耦合的滤波器[6-8]和基于高阶模谐振器耦合的滤波器[9-11]。其中毫米波频段基模谐振器耦合的滤波器其理论已较为成熟,一般为获得更优的性能基模谐振器耦合的滤波器设计往往需增加阶数,这直接导致滤波器整体尺寸增大与结构复杂度提高。典型的如文献[8]提出的12阶W波段矩形波导带通滤波器虽通过多阶谐振腔设计改善了带外抑制,但在设计过程中引入了14 阶耦合矩阵显著增加了设计难度,且密集的腔体耦合导致尺寸容差较低,对加工精度要求更为苛刻。
近年来,基于高阶模谐振器耦合的滤波器在带通滤波器设计中得到了广泛研究,这是因为它能够利用高阶模形成的大尺寸腔体来降低结构对加工误差的敏感度,且能够实现较高的Q值。文献[9]中,采用基于TM120谐振器的W波段波导型带通滤波器,通过使用TM120谐振器获得了更大的尺寸和更小的纵横比,这使腔体在制造过程中允许更大的尺寸公差。文献[10]中采用基于TE102谐振器的W波段波导型带通滤波器,使用E面和H面双加载虹膜来保持TE102模式电磁场的流动从而获得更高Q值。目前,为了获得更高精度的高阶模波导型滤波器,不同的新型微加工工艺已经被应用在此种滤波器的制作中,包括计算机数控技术(CNC)[12]、深反应离子刻蚀(DRIE)技术[13]、SU-8光刻[14]、立体光刻(3D打印)[15]等。对比上述的几种工艺,CNC加工工艺技术成熟、加工精度高,成本低,已经成为毫米波频段器件加工的首选方案。
综上所述,针对W频段目前已报道的基于高阶模谐振器耦合的滤波器具有多种电路结构与多种加工方式,并展现出良好的性能。而在结构复杂度,混合模式应用等方面仍有不足。本文提出了一种W频段基于H面偏移磁耦合结构的混合高阶模准椭圆波导滤波器。本设计与传统切比雪夫滤波器不同,基于准椭圆函数滤波器理论,通过在不同谐振腔中分别激励TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102模式,从而在通带两侧引入传输零点并且拓展了高阶模准椭圆滤波器的设计维度。同时,采用H面偏移磁耦合结构取代传统精密耦合膜片,利用错位耦合机制降低对加工精度的苛刻要求,增强了结构鲁棒性与工艺容差。
本文提出一款基于H面偏移磁耦合结构的混合高阶模波导滤波器,该滤波器仅包含两个谐振腔,其具体结构如图1所示。滤波器输入输出端采用H面偏移磁耦合方式,仅通过调节参数d1d2就可以有效控制耦合系数并优化阻抗匹配。并且输入输出端口均采用标准WR-10矩形波导(2.54 mm × 1.27 mm),谐振腔高度与矩形波导窄边高度保持一致。本文选取两个谐振腔分别基于TE201/TE102和TE301/TE102两种不同的混合模谐振模式进行设计,使得上下边带各有一个传输零点并且调控相互独立,从而最大程度降低了传输零点间的相互干扰。根据这两种模式的特点,构造了一个混合高阶模谐振腔的四阶波导带通滤波器耦合拓扑图如图2所示,图中实心圆代表源或负载,空心圆表示矩形谐振腔;I和II分别表示TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102的混合高阶模谐振腔并且由非谐振节点(NRN)进行级联,从电路等效的角度来看,非谐振节点可视为一个恒定的并联导纳[16]
矩形波导谐振腔是W波段波导带通滤波器重要组成部分,矩形波导谐振腔存在着TEmnp与TMmnp两种模式,本文选择TEmnp模式进行设计,谐振器中TEmnp模式的谐振频率可由式(1)进行计算[17],其中abl分别表示矩形波导谐振腔的宽边、窄边和高度。mnp代表TEmnp的各个模式矩形波导谐振腔三个空间方向上的半波数。

实现混合模操作所需施加的附加约束是所选择模式的mp值不能相同,这一条件确保了谐振器两侧所选谐振模式的场分布相互正交,从而满足混合模独立工作的基本要求。因此本文选取TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102两种混合高阶模作为本文的谐振模式,图3所示分别表示TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102两种谐振腔电场分布,可以从中看出TE301模的电场由中间到窄边会先变弱,然后变强,最后变弱,TE201模的电场会先变强在变弱而TE102模的电场会变得越来越弱。因此,为了同时控制模式的耦合,两个混合高阶模谐振器的相互作用必须发生在宽边侧壁上[18]
高阶模谐振腔因其空腔尺寸较大,能够容纳更宽松的加工公差,从而降低了对腔体加工精度的要求。本文提出的TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102两种高阶模谐振腔同样具备这一优势。假设变量Δwabl三个尺寸上同时改变的误差值,通过全波仿真计算下高阶模谐振腔尺寸误差(Δw)对谐振频率的影响,并于TE101模式进行对比如图4所示。可以明显看出,与TE101模相比,TE102、TE201与TE301三种高阶模式的谐振腔的谐振频率对尺寸误差(Δw)在±10 µm加工误差范围内的灵敏度大大降低,从而降低加工难度。
TE301/TE102与TE201/TE102的混合高阶模谐振腔各提供两个传输极点和一个传输零点,且传输零点是由两个混合高阶模谐振腔中双模简并构成。与此同时,通过调整谐振腔的关键几何参数,可对混合模谐振腔中传输零点的位置实现独立且精确的调控。为验证传输零点在设计中具有的灵活性与独立性,本文系统研究了TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102两种混合高阶模波导谐振腔的关键参数变化对其传输零点分布的影响。其中,a1a2分别代表TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102谐振腔的宽边尺寸,是调控传输零点位置的重要参数之一。图5(a)图5(b)分别展示了调节参数a1a2对滤波器传输零点位置的影响。由图5(a)可知,随着a1增大,高频传输零点向低频方向移动,而低频传输零点基本保持不变;图5(b)则表明,随着a2增大,低频传输零点向低频方向移动,而高频传输零点几乎不受影响。由此可见,通过独立调节a1a2,可独立控制高频与低频传输零点的位置,从而实现对滤波器传输零点分布的灵活设计。
W波段矩形波导带通滤波器通常由矩形波导谐振腔直接耦合构成,常见的波导谐振腔直接耦合结构包括H面磁耦合、E面电耦合和H面偏移磁耦合。如图6(a)图6(b)所示,H面磁耦合与E面电耦合结构由感性膜片或容性膜片构成的,其中感性膜片的宽度和厚度分别为dg,容性膜片的高度与厚度为hg。而在毫米波乃至太赫兹频段波导器件的设计时,输入与输出的感性膜片与容性膜片厚度g往往在滤波器模块设计中尺寸最小、需求精度最高的结构。此类输入与输出耦合膜片的关键尺寸g通常很小的误差导致很大的变化,这给加工制造带来了显著挑战。相比之下,H面偏移磁耦合结构如图6(c)所示,其结构简单输入端与输出端无感性膜片或容性膜片,从而从根本上避免了上述问题。且相比于H面磁耦合与E面电耦合调整耦合系数时需要调节两个参数,H面偏移磁耦合只需要通过调节相邻谐振腔间耦合窗口的尺寸d就可以灵活控制耦合系数,很大程度上减少波导型带通滤波器设计难度。此外,本团队在以前工作中[19]已经验证了W波段H面偏移磁耦合加工的可行性且详细说明H面偏移磁耦合相对于H面磁耦合与E面电耦合具有更强的耦合能力。
本研究采用模式匹配法对混合高阶模滤波器进行初步设计与参数优化,并以此为基础在HFSS软件中建立全波电磁模型并完成仿真优化。为兼顾加工工艺的可行性,仿真设计中统一将最小圆角半径设置为0.25 mm。 优化后的仿真结果如图7所示:在91.5~98 GHz频带内,滤波器插入损耗优于0.25 dB,回波损耗优于15 dB;同时,在87 GHz与102 GHz附近各形成一个传输零点,从而显著提升了双边带外抑制性能,满足后续系统集成要求。
本研究采用基于高精度数控铣削(CNC)工艺H面分裂式加工方式,未采用传统对称铣削方式,而是创新性地实施了单侧铣削方案,为最大限度维持电场完整性并降低插入损耗,减少加工时间并避免错位问题。具体加工方案:所有的几何结构都在一个分体块内加工,在下腔体四角设置凸台结构,并与上腔体对应位置的凹台配合,以实现更精准的腔体对位;所用最小钻头半径为0.25 mm,与仿真设定的倒角尺寸一致;上下腔体配合销钉及螺钉,实现定位和固定,同时波导口面配置标准UG-387法兰,见图8。为了实现毫米级装配精度,UG-387法兰的螺丝孔和销孔必须精心制造,以确保装配精度。最终滤波器的体积尺寸为W×L×H=20 mm×20 mm×20 mm,实物加工如图9(a)所示。
测试系统由矢量网络分析仪配合W波段扩展模块构成,测试布置如图9(b)所示。在正式测试前,首先进行TRL校准以消除系统误差,随后对滤波器开展二端口S参数测量。得益于该滤波器结构的简单性与易加工性,实测与仿真结果吻合度很高,实测结果如图10所示,91.5~98 GHz频率范围内,插入损耗优于0.4 dB,且回波损耗优于15 dB,与模拟预测的结果基本一致。模型仿真过程中,将金的电导率(4.1×107 S/m)和其表面粗糙度(0.2 μm)代入模型中,以此来尽可能地模拟出包括金属材料不理想、表面电阻、粗糙度、电接触等在制作和测量过程中可能引入的额外损耗。实物测试结果相较于仿真呈现整体频率响应的向低频偏移且上频段传输零点向通带内靠近。主要原因可能是CNC加工中的系统性正公差导致实际波导腔体的等效电尺寸大于仿真设计值;谐振腔a1在铣削过程中出现了相对较大的局部正公差,进一步加剧了频率响应的偏移。同时,对混合高阶模滤波器的性能进行了容差分析。图10中灰色线条表示在全波仿真计算下输入输出波导处关键尺寸(d1d2)的尺寸误差(Δd)±10 µm(步长为2 µm)对S11S21的响应曲线,变量Δdd1d2同时变换的值。结果表明,在Δd±10 µm(步长为2 µm)加工误差条件下,S11S21性能波动较小,说明该结构对输入输出波导处关键尺寸加工误差不敏感,具备较好的工艺容差特性。
表1汇总了本文滤波器与现有毫米波及太赫兹滤波器的性能对比,结果表明:传统滤波器为获得优异的性能,通常需采用复杂的结构设计,这将导致其设计流程繁琐、系统集成难度高,且不利于整体结构稳定实现。相比之下,本文提出的滤波器采用了新型TE201/TE102与TE301/TE102两种混合高阶模谐振腔设计通过较少的腔体实现低插入损耗和宽通带的特性,且在带外引入两个可控传输零点产生良好的带外抑制效果。此外,本工作在毫米波频段验证该结构设计的可行性,进而向更高频段进行拓展,并且探索与新型微纳工艺相适应的结构形式。
本文基于混合高阶模谐振腔研制了一款W波段波导滤波器,获得了91.5~98 GHz通带特性,通带内插入损耗仅为0.4 dB,回波损耗优于15 dB。通过2个腔体分别混合高阶模TE201/TE102和TE301/TE102,在带外获得了两个传输零点,实现带外高抑制性能。结合偏移磁耦合方法,提高了设计的灵活性,降低了CNC的制备难度,同时增强了结构鲁棒性。总体而言,该款滤波器具有低损耗、低阶数、易加工等特点,其结构易集成至收发系统中,且易被扩频至太赫兹频段。
