In response to the need for realism, diversity, and representation of automotive use scenarios in virtual scenes during automotive design reviews, this research is based on High Dynamic Range (HDR) image capture technology. This paper introduces the current application status of HDR images in automotive design reviews. It combines the years of research achievements by the China FAW Group’s visual design team in the field of real-time rendering to propose a comprehensive theoretical and technical scheme for capturing and producing high-quality digital scenes specifically for automotive reviews. The results show that by independently mastering HDR image capture technology, the design team can tailor realistic digital scenes according to design review needs, significantly enhancing the realism and diversity of virtual environments in design reviews. Additionally, it vividly represents automotive usage scenarios, effectively improving the efficiency of design reviews.

针对汽车造型设计评审中对虚拟场景真实感、多样化与汽车使用场景表现的需求,基于高动态范围(HDR)图像采集技术进行研究。介绍了HDR图像在汽车设计评审中的应用现状,结合造型可视化设计在实时渲染领域的研究成果,提出了一套完整的、针对汽车评审用途的采集制作高品质数字场景的理论和技术方案。结果表明:设计团队通过自主掌握HDR图像采集技术,可根据造型评审需求制作拟真的数字场景,显著提高设计评审中虚拟环境的真实感与多样化,同时可生动表现汽车的使用情景,有效提升了设计评审的效率。

In response to the need for realism, diversity, and representation of automotive use scenarios in virtual scenes during automotive design reviews, this research is based on High Dynamic Range (HDR) image capture technology. This paper introduces the current application status of HDR images in automotive design reviews. It combines the years of research achievements by the China FAW Group’s visual design team in the field of real-time rendering to propose a comprehensive theoretical and technical scheme for capturing and producing high-quality digital scenes specifically for automotive reviews. The results show that by independently mastering HDR image capture technology, the design team can tailor realistic digital scenes according to design review needs, significantly enhancing the realism and diversity of virtual environments in design reviews. Additionally, it vividly represents automotive usage scenarios, effectively improving the efficiency of design reviews.

在汽车造型设计的过程中,造型评审是一个重要的里程碑节点。为了完成展示评审工作,需要将此阶段的设计方案采用虚拟现实技术将汽车数字模型放到虚拟环境中进行实时渲染,通过大屏幕或XR设备进行展示,以尽可能真实地呈现视觉效果。虚拟环境的真实感和丰富度能大幅提升设计方案的展示效果,为了追求真实感,上海汽车技术中心团队采用高动态范围成像(High Dynamic Range Imaging, HDR)与3D模型组合的形式开发了虚拟评审厅[1],江淮汽车技术中心团队提出建立HDR场景[2]以提升虚拟场景的丰富度。汽车设计部门对特殊定制虚拟场景(如特定季节/特定天气/特定地点)的应用需求高,但现阶段多数汽车设计团队不具备户外高品质HDR图像的自主采集与处理能力,多通过采购与网络收集的方式获取,成本、数量与质量都不尽如人意。本文针对汽车评审数字场景的定制开发需求,通过研究HDR的生成原理,提出针对汽车评审用途的HDR图像采集与合成方法,为汽车设计部门提供自主开发定制虚拟场景的解决方案。
计算机存储的图像信息需要通过数字信号向光信号的转换进行呈现。与计算机表示图像相似,显示器显示的颜色同样由红绿蓝(Red Green Blue, RGB)3个通道混合形成。3种颜色全部最高亮度亮起即显示为白色,全部以最低亮度亮起或关闭即显示为黑色,通过3个通道各自不同的亮度级别形成各种各样的颜色。将24位图的二进制图像数字信号对应至显示器的每个像素,单个像素即能显示16 777 216种颜色,通过无数个像素同时工作便显示出彩色图像。目前主流的显示器只能显示8位的位深度,这是由于显示器的最高亮度和最低亮度的限制。但是一些高规格显示器,如OLED、MiniLED、MicroLED等,其最高亮度极高同时最低亮度极低,这便为显示更高位深度的图像提供了可能。
对于发光的物体,如图1中的太阳和车灯,在显示器中,它们会被表示为白色像素。但是,实际上它们的亮度可能远远超出了显示器所能表示的范围。这是因为显示器只能够表示有限的动态范围,而现实世界中光的动态范围非常广泛。因此,在显示器中显示的画面只是对现实世界光的一种简化和近似,无法完全还原真实的光亮度。
如果同样是这张图,但是太阳和车灯能有很明显的亮度差别,那这张图片就具备了不同亮度的白色。为了显示这种亮度的层次感,HDR技术和支持HDR显示的显示器应运而生。HDR目标是提供比传统标准动态范围图像(Standard Dynamic Range Image, SDR)更高的对比度和色彩范围,使得影像更为真实、生动。要支持HDR显示,要求显示器的最高亮度和最低亮度的范围足够大,才能容纳HDR相比SOR多出几十倍的色彩信息。至于显示器的动态范围达到什么级别才具备HDR显示的能力,这个标准不是固定的,而是由各种不同的HDR标准来规定的,例如HDR10、HDR10+、DolbyVision等,这些标准都有不同的最低要求和特点,而真正支持HDR显示的设备往往非常昂贵,基本都是基于LED、OLED、MiniLED、MicroLED等技术的显示面板。目前市面上存在很多低端显示器声称其具备HDR功能,这些显示器通常只是支持8位深度以上图像的解码播放,但其显示面板并未达到HDR内容的要求,因此在用其播放真正的HDR内容时,会出现画面发灰等现象,无法展现出HDR内容真实的画面效果。
高动态范围图像(High-Dynamic Range Image, HDRI)指采用HDR技术所拍摄或生成的图像。动态范围指图像中最亮点和最暗点之间的亮度差异,“高动态范围”的“高”是相对于低动态范围(Low-Dynamic Range, LDR)或SDR的概念而言的。高动态范围的图像能够捕捉到比标准图像更多的亮度细节。
图2所示,以横轴作为动态范围值,在数字世界中,由于显示器、摄像机等设备的限制,很难完整展现或捕获现实世界中的动态范围。目前,大多数显示器的动态范围只能达到约300~500 cd/m²,而太阳的亮度则可以达到约1.6×109 cd/m²,两者相差了几个数量级。因此,在数字世界中,需要采用一些技术手段来提高图像的动态范围,以便更好地展现现实世界中的场景。
人眼被认为是最先进的相机,但是它仍然无法捕获自然界中全部的动态范围。例如,人眼无法长时间盯着太阳看,因为太阳的亮度远远超过了人眼所能承受的动态范围。对于数码相机来说,虽然一些专用相机能捕获人眼看不到的动态范围(例如夜视仪),但其单次能捕获的动态范围跨度远远低于人眼。常见的相机RAW格式支持的位深度为12bit。对于显示设备,虽然最高亮度、对比度等参数不尽相同,但目前普遍支持的是8bit深度格式的图像。相较于相机RAW格式的12bit,显示设备能显示的动态范围最小。
图2中人眼、相机、显示器的动态范围仅表示其能捕获或显示的范围,但其标尺所在的位置并不是一成不变的。例如,相机可以通过调整曝光值来捕获不同范围的亮度,显示器可以通过提高或降低亮度来显示不同范围的亮度,而人眼也可以通过调节瞳孔大小自动调节曝光。但无论其标尺位置如何变化,各自的动态范围跨度是恒定的,这是由其各自的属性所决定的。
通过相机一次拍摄的图像,其采集的动态范围跨度是恒定的,但其采集的范围可以通过调整曝光值来调整。基于这个原理,将不同曝光值的照片按曝光高低进行排序,然后进行合成,就可以人为扩大相机采集的曝光范围,如图3所示,这种处理方式即为多重曝光图像合成。
通过多重曝光采集更大的动态范围,然后存储为专用格式,即可得到一张高动态范围图像。
色调映射(Tone-Mapping)是将高动态范围图像中的亮度范围压缩到普通显示器可接受并显示的范围,目的是尽量保留图像中的关键信息,避免图像失真的同时呈现尽可能多的画面内容。
图4展示了一张HDR图片和SDR图片,两张图片显示的视觉效果上并没有明显的差异,这是因为HDR图片的动态范围已经超过了显示器所能显示的亮度范围,Photoshop软件为了让其能够正常显示,对其进行了色调映射计算处理,以保证显示器能够正常显示。在色调映射的处理过程中,需要舍弃掉一些超过显示范围的图像信息。利用HDR图片丰富的动态范围信息,在色调映射过程中进行人为调整,通过有选择地的保留图像的关键信息,可在显示器有限的动态范围内呈现更丰富的画面内容,以提高图片的观感。
对于拍摄的照片,如果其中有些部分过暗或过亮,可以通过调节色调映射参数来调节暗部和亮部细节,在使用Photoshop进行HDR图片转换时,软件会弹出色调映射参数的调整窗口,用户可以通过调整其中的参数来决定保留哪些信息,这对于照片的后期处理非常有用。
在摄影领域中,常常采用多重曝光的方法对同一场景进行多次拍摄以采集丰富的动态范围信息,然后通过色调映射的方式来制作优美的风景照。如图5所示的现实场景中,云朵和太阳的亮度远远高于地面上的石头和阴影细节,其亮度差异超出了相机一次拍摄所能采集的范围。因此,需要先通过多重曝光的方式合成一张高动态范围图像,然后利用色调映射调整,兼顾亮度与暗部的画面细节,从而获得一张充满细节的风景照片。
全景图是一种具有超宽视角的图像,广泛应用于汽车设计可视化专业中。其中,360°全景图配合三维场景可以全视角完美展示产品,尤其适用于汽车设计评审场景。当全景图与HDRI技术结合时,可以得到全景HDRI。在进行汽车可视化CG渲染时,全景HDRI可以作为汽车背景,同时还可以基于图像的照明技术(Image-Based Lighting, IBL)利用全景图中的元素(如太阳)直接提供照明信息进行数模渲染。
光的概念在CG渲染中和现实世界中一样重要。CG艺术家又被称为数字摄影师,这是因为现实世界中的摄影师捕获的是真实的光,而对CG艺术家来说,捕获的则是数字的光。光影效果是一部渲染作品品质的决定性因素之一,所以布光在数字渲染中是一项极其重要的工作。
专业的渲染软件通常会预设多种光源类型,如平行光、点光源和聚光灯,通过对这些光源的位置与参数进行手动调整,可以获得简单的照明效果。这种手动布光方式比较适合模拟摄影棚这样的简单场景,在模拟复杂场景光照时,这种方法的工作量将变得非常大。这是因为在复杂的现实场景中,物体不仅会受到光源的直接照明,还会受到其他物体反射光的间接照明。为了获得真实的渲染效果,必须对场景中的所有物体进行建模并赋予相应的材质,这将使场景搭建的工作量呈指数级增加。在这种情况下,使用IBL是一种更优的解决方案。IBL是一种完全依赖于图像本身的照明方式,它利用图像中的亮度和色彩信息来计算光照信息[7]。这意味着,光照信息的丰富程度取决于图像的色彩丰富程度。因此,使用一张图片就可以轻松地模拟现实世界中复杂的场景,而无需对场景中的所有物体进行建模。对于汽车可视化展示来说,IBL是一个非常有用的照明方法。由于汽车是场景中的唯一主体,可以使用一张全景图像作为光源和背景。这样不仅可以减少工作量,还可以减轻渲染负担,从而保证实时渲染的流畅度。
总之,IBL是一种更简单、更高效的照明方式,可以为复杂场景的渲染提供可行的解决方案。
当使用IBL进行渲染时,需要确保所使用的图片具有足够高的位深度。如果位深度不足,则渲染软件无法从图像信息中反推出准确的光照强度。如图6所示,图6a为SDR图像,图6b为HDR图像。当将SDR图像用作光源贴图时,太阳和云彩在天空中的颜色信息都被记录为白色的二进制值,无法反映它们真实的亮度差异信息。因此,在进行基于图像的光照渲染时,必须使用足够高的位深度的图像。
在这样的现实场景中放置一辆汽车,在阳光的照射下,汽车会产生非常丰富的阴影和高光效果。但是当使用SDR图片作为光源贴图时,它无法记录阳光和其他部分的亮度差异,导致渲染软件无法准确计算汽车表面所接受的阳光强度,从而使其明暗变化、阴影和高光效果匮乏,场景的真实感大幅降低,见图7
HDR图虽然在显示器上与SDR图的观感并没有较大区别,但是其包含了大量未被显示的图像信息,这些信息记录了太阳和其他部分的亮度差异,其中太阳部分的亮度远远大于其他部分。当使用HDR图作为光源时,渲染软件可以精确地反推出各部分光的强度值,HDR图中包含的信息越多,反推出来的光源就越丰富,渲染的光影效果就会更真实,见图8
总之,在技术层面,SDR和HDR图片都可以用作光源贴图来照明场景,但是HDR图片包含的动态范围信息更加丰富,所以在使用HDR图片作为光源时,可以带来更真实的渲染效果。现在已经有了通过智能补足SDR信息转化为HDR的方法[8],这使得SDR图片也能够在一定程度上被用作场景照明。在汽车可视化渲染中,会直接使用HDR图片为场景照明,只有一些细节部分如屏幕部分发光或者车灯贴图等会采用SDR图片照明。这是因为这些区域的光源影响范围相对较小,不会对整体场景有太大的影响。同时,使用SDR图像可以有效减少渲染文件的大小,提高实时渲染的流畅度。
在制作数字场景时,为了捕获真实的光照信息,需要选择合适的地点和时间进行拍摄。对于IBL照明贴图,为了追求真实感,应该尽可能减少后期处理,而是充分利用自然光线。因此,在选择地点和时间时,要考虑光照条件的稳定性和适宜性。
对于汽车渲染,为了展示汽车的造型,通常选择比较干净简洁的地点,这样可以形成明晰的远景消失天际线,使汽车侧面形成一道漂亮的反射腰线[9],使型面表现更加准确。过于繁杂的场景会破坏汽车本身的线条,所以应该避免选择过于复杂的地点。此外,场地应该足够开阔,预留出放车的位置,并且在车周围5 m内不能有纵向的遮挡物,以避免全景图片转为球面时物体的扭曲变形,见图9。如果想把特定物体或建筑物作为汽车的背景,取景距离应该适当拉远,以避免物体变形。实际采集时还需要根据具体的车型风格、任务目标、展示用途等做出适当调整。如,对于红旗E-HS9敦煌版的室外场景,背景限定为莫高窟门口(见图10),主要是为了体现地域风格,因此需要在有限的区域内选择适合汽车停放的位置,避免背景的物体变形,并等待一个合适的时间进行拍摄。
对汽车可视化设计师而言,取景时间的选择本质上是对光照风格的选择。同一地点可能会在不同的天气和时间下呈现出完全不同的风格。在时间充裕的情况下,摄影师通常会在一个地方持续观察,直到出现理想的景象。风景摄影作品选择日出和日落时间段的占比很高。这是因为在日出日落时,天际线处的阳光会形成漂亮的晕影,搭配薄云,就形成了漂亮的朝霞和晚霞。同时,暖色光下的间接照明可以提升画面的色彩丰富程度。对于汽车数字化场景也是如此,通常选择日出或日落时间段,因为暖色的间接照明可以提升车身反射的观感,同时这两个时间段的太阳亮度远远低于中午时刻,对于需要进行360°实时展示的应用场景来说,汽车不存在绝对的背光面,各个视角的观感都不错,没有很明显的死角。而在太阳光比较强的时段采集是有利有弊的,有利之处在于向光面光照强度高,视觉效果好,弊处在于背光面处于照明死角,在实时渲染时观感不佳,因此其最佳展示视角会相对少很多。不同的光照风格都有其各自的韵味,例如,在表现一些冷酷风格的车型时,多会选择阴天或大背光阴影区域来取景。
在照片整理完成后,需要使用Lightroom软件对照片进行一定的预处理。主要是去除图像中物体边缘的紫/(绿)边。如果不进行处理直接进行合成,会非常影响最终成片的质量。
合成全景HDRI是两步过程:首先合成一张全景图,然后使用多个不同曝光值的全景图合成高动态范围全景图。推荐使用专业的全景图合成软件PTGUI[10],它能够自动识别全景和多重曝光素材。选取前一步整理好的照片素材,软件会自动读出照片信息,包括镜头焦距、曝光时间等。照片的ISO和光圈都是统一的,唯一的变量是快门时间,这是为了保证不同角度在同一曝光挡位的曝光值完全一致。否则,合成全景图可能会失败,或者合成的图像会有接缝,需要进一步去除接缝[11],这将非常繁琐。按照软件提示依次完成影像对齐、裁切、曝光优化和合成全景等步骤,激活HDR功能,然后点击输出即可。
全景HDRI合成完成后,需要处理区域曝光,主要是画面中的特别强光,例如太阳、射灯等。虽然取景时采用了多重曝光,已经捕获到了远远超过单张照片的动态范围,但对于太阳、射灯这样的超强光源,现有的曝光范围仍然不足。因此,在使用合成的源图像作为光照贴图提供照明时,太阳光方向形成的阴影会比较淡,达不到真实的阴影强度。解决这个问题的方法是使用Photoshop手动拉升强光区域的曝光强度,通过后处理的方式增加图像整体细节[12]。经过后处理,这张全景HDRI就可以还原真实场景光照的效果。
经过上述步骤的处理可得到能够提供照明和背景功能的全景HDRI。将其导入汽车可视化渲染软件VRED Pro时,全景HDRI会自动展开为一个半球形的全景图。此时,将汽车模型导入场景中心并完成其材质效果渲染,利用全景HDRI的光照信息烘焙汽车数据的光影,就能得到一套基础的汽车造型可视化展示数据。为增强场景的互动性,可以加入一些实体模型[13],例如树木、草地、地面建筑等,如图11所示。
根据数字场景的制作原理,可以根据实际应用需求,在世界各地采集美景并合成全景HDRI,以制作个性化的数字场景,图12即在长春北湖公园采集的数字场景,可在汽车造型评审时进行方便快速的展示和切换。同时,还可以与虚拟现实技术结合,搭配XR头显,提供更为沉浸的视觉体验。
本文基于高动态范围图像技术,开发了一套专门用于汽车设计评审的虚拟场景解决方案。本研究建立了适用于汽车评审的HDR图像采集与合成方法,提供了自主开发定制虚拟场景的技术支持。汽车设计部门应用该解决方案,可以显著提升设计评审中的虚拟环境真实感与多样性,同时生动呈现汽车使用情景,显著提高设计评审效率。
未来,随着技术的持续发展,HDR图像采集技术将在虚拟现实和汽车设计领域发挥更重要的作用。今后的研究将集中于进一步优化HDR图像的合成技术,提高采集效率和动态范围,以满足日益增长的设计需求和更复杂的应用场景。此外,探索HDR技术在其他工业设计领域的应用潜力,也将为技术的发展和应用提供更广阔的前景。
