In the science fiction of late Qing dynasty, the scientific and technological achievements invented by experts and specialists were weaved into the narration in the form of imaginary "things", and became the material cornerstone for novelists to construct the fictional space. In the functional imagination of this "things", the literariness of Late Qing science fiction was weakened by the authors' exaggeration of the performance of "thing", repetition of political theme of "science saving China", and their overt concern of society. Despite of these, the spirit of embracing science and exploring the unknown in these fictional texts still has considerable artistic values.

在晚清科幻小说中，由先进技术掌握者发明的科技成果以一种只存在于想象层面的“物”的形态参与叙事，并成为小说家构筑幻想空间的物质基石。在对这种“物”进行功能化想象时，晚清科幻小说尽管因无限制夸大想象之“物”的性能、反复强调科技救国主题、过分凸显现实关切情结这三个特征削弱了小说的文学性，但其表现出的拥抱科学的努力和积极探索未知空间的精神仍有不可忽视的艺术价值。
