湖泊不仅储水，也储碳。植物和藻类吸收的二氧化碳会随有机物沉入湖底，并在缺氧沉积物中保存数十年甚至更久。但当湖泊萎缩，原本被水覆盖的沉积物暴露在空气中，其中的有机质会加速分解，过去积累的碳可能重新返回大气。长期以来，干涸湖床造成的碳损失很少被纳入区域和全球碳清单。
