    “河口”一词源于拉丁语“潮汐出没之地”,潮汐作为塑造沿海生态与水文过程的关键力量,不仅控制着湿地分布、调节咸淡水混合范围,还深刻影响着沿海城市饮用水安全、三角洲农业灌溉乃至风暴潮洪水风险,但长期以来,由于河流地形复杂、原位观测站稀疏,加上传统卫星测高覆盖不足,全球多数河流的潮汐影响范围始终是未解之谜。
    这种“管中窥豹”的观测格局在2022年底被彻底打破。随着“地表水与海洋地形”(surface water and ocean topography,SWOT)卫星的成功发射,全球水文学研究迎来了一场从“线”到“面”的革命。
    SWOT卫星由美国国家航空航天局与法国国家空间研究中心联合研制,其核心利器是一台名为KaRIn的干涉雷达。与以往只能垂直向下测量的仪器不同,KaRIn利用雷达干涉技术,能够实现左右各50 km的双幅宽观测,总覆盖宽度达到120 km。这种二维宽幅成像能力,让科学家首次能够以厘米级的高度精度,实时俯瞰全球超过90%的地表水动态,将卫星测高的分辨率提升了数个数量级。
    由德国慕尼黑工业大学Michael Hart-Davis领衔,集结了来自全球多个科研机构的联合团队,利用2023年3月至2025年5月的SWOT卫星数据,成功绘制出全球首份河流潮汐图谱,揭开了全球3172条沿海河流的潮汐脉动之谜。
    研究团队经过严格的质量控制筛选出7200万个有效观测点,通过数据分析技术提取出半日潮(M2)和全日潮(O1)2大核心潮汐信号,并结合全球622个原位潮位站数据进行验证,结果显示卫星估算的潮汐振幅中位误差仅为数厘米,精度远超传统观测手段。通过4项关键指标——振幅置信度、信噪比、与河流地形的匹配度及13 cm的振幅阈值,研究将全球51627条河道划分为潮汐、可能潮汐、可能非潮汐和非潮汐4类,最终识别出超过16.5万km的潮汐影响河道,覆盖了全球10%的人口(约7.15亿人)和2.5% 的农业耕地,填补了全球河流潮汐观测的空白。
    有趣的是,研究发现河流的潮汐传播范围并非随机分布,而是受3大核心因素控制:河流规模越大,潮汐延伸越远,比如7级以上的大型河流(亚马逊河、长江类大河)潮汐中位传播距离达161 km,而小型河流仅13 km;河床坡度越平缓、河口宽度越宽阔,潮汐能量耗散越慢,其中坡度小于25 mm/km的河流潮汐可达44 km,河口宽度超1000 m的河流潮汐能延伸67 km。更令人意外的是,约25% 的潮汐河流存在“上游振幅放大”现象,如德国易北河在汉堡上游因河道分支汇聚,潮汐振幅反而显著增大,这一复杂现象被卫星精准捕捉。
    这一研究的实用价值已在刚果河的案例中得到体现:通过SWOT卫星提供的潮汐数据校正传统测高记录,研究团队成功修正了2023年刚果河洪水的洪峰时间,将原本误判的峰值提前两周,与实际灾情记录高度吻合,为极端水文事件分析提供了全新工具。
    此外,该数据集还为多学科研究开辟了新路径:对生态学家而言,它能助力河口湿地保护与碳循环估算;对气候学家来说,可为海平面上升、特大型干旱的影响评估提供支撑;对水资源管理者而言,更是预测盐水入侵、保障沿海城市供水安全的关键依据。研究团队已公开相关数据与分析代码,随着SWOT卫星观测序列的延长,未来还将解析更多潮汐分潮与河潮相互作用机制,进一步提升潮汐预测精度。
