We first briefly review the Higgs mechanism proposed in 1964 by Peter Higgs and Francois Englert et al. together with its important role in the construction of the electroweak standard model, showing why the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to Englert and Higgs after the discovery of a Higgs resonance in 2012.
