Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is widely used to treat patients with coronary artery disease. However, restenosis after PTCA, which occurs in 30%~50% of cases, is a severe problem that limits the efficacy of the intervention. Restenosis is a complex process caused by many factors, including elastic recoil of vessels, thrombosis, neointima formation, blood vessel wall remodeling, and inflammatory reactions. One of the most important steps in restenosis is the excessive proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Magnetic induction hyperthermia treatment offers a new approach to prevent and treat restenosis, by inhibiting the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Magnetic induction hyperthermia avoids the need for surgery, does not carry risk of adverse physical stimulation, and can reduce the suffering of patients.
