This paper discusses the characteristics of inflatable anchor and reviews the present state of development of inflatable anchor, the mechanism of load transferring and the anchoring mechanism. It is shown that the limit tensile load of inflatable anchor is related to many factors, including soil density, soft soil liquidity index, anchor length, inflatable air pressure, rubber thickness, rubber fiction, air inflatable volume and the anchoring depth. Among those factors, the anchor length is the most important. The limit tensile load of inflatable anchor is 4 times of that of helical plate anchor. The limit tensile load in the drainage test is 3~4 times of that in undrainage test. If the air pressure is constant, the limit tensile load varies greatly in different soils. The short anchor (about 100mm in length) will be loaded along the whole shaft. Inflatable anchor is a new type of anchor, developed based on the soil-anchor characteristics. Under compressive loading, the soft soil will be greatly deformed.
