Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be isolated, expanded, and stimulated to differentiate into various tissues in vitro. This approach is now being explored to generate engineered tissues that the body cannot naturally repair when challenged. Obstacles relate to the application of controllable cell culture modes and systems to specifically mimic in vivo environment.
