Developing efficient material recovery strategies is crucial for achieving a sustainable transformation of the plastic economy. However, the complex composition and high heterogeneity of real−life plastic waste pose significant challenges to the process. Professor Ma from Peking University, along with collaborators, proposed an orthogonal transformation strategy. They integrated solid−state NMR analysis with catalytic conversion methods. This approach successfully established a highly adaptable route. The route can convert unknown real−life plastic waste into a series of valuable chemicals. The strategy still requires further optimization and validation in its economic feasibility, environmental benefits, industrial applicability and so on. Nevertheless, it offers a complementary new perspective for addressing this complex real−world problem. This strategy holds promise for achieving high−value utilization of carbon and hydrogen resources in real−life plastic waste. It also provides theoretical support for advancing a circular economy in the plastics sector.

开发高效的物质回收策略对实现塑料经济的可持续转型至关重要,然而实际塑料废弃物的复杂组成和高度异质性,使得其回收过程面临巨大挑战。本文提出一种正交转化策略,其核心思想是利用不同塑料在分子结构、溶解行为和反应活性等方面的本征差异,通过一系列相互独立、互不干扰的物理分离与催化反应步骤,实现混合塑料中各组分的分步识别与选择性转化。该策略通过固体核磁共振对真实塑料废弃物进行原位表征,并据此动态匹配溶剂体系与催化路径,建立了一条对原料组成不确定性具有较高适应性的转化流程,可将未知来源的复杂塑料混合物转化为多种高附加值化学品。尽管该策略在经济性、环境效益及产业化可行性等方面仍需进一步优化与验证,但它为解决这一复杂现实问题提供了具有差异化和互补性的新思路,有望实现真实塑料废弃物中碳氢资源的高值化利用,为塑料领域循环经济发展提供理论支撑。

开发高效的物质回收策略对实现塑料经济的可持续转型至关重要,然而实际塑料废弃物的复杂组成和高度异质性,使得其回收过程面临巨大挑战。本文提出一种正交转化策略,其核心思想是利用不同塑料在分子结构、溶解行为和反应活性等方面的本征差异,通过一系列相互独立、互不干扰的物理分离与催化反应步骤,实现混合塑料中各组分的分步识别与选择性转化。该策略通过固体核磁共振对真实塑料废弃物进行原位表征,并据此动态匹配溶剂体系与催化路径,建立了一条对原料组成不确定性具有较高适应性的转化流程,可将未知来源的复杂塑料混合物转化为多种高附加值化学品。尽管该策略在经济性、环境效益及产业化可行性等方面仍需进一步优化与验证,但它为解决这一复杂现实问题提供了具有差异化和互补性的新思路,有望实现真实塑料废弃物中碳氢资源的高值化利用,为塑料领域循环经济发展提供理论支撑。

Developing efficient material recovery strategies is crucial for achieving a sustainable transformation of the plastic economy. However, the complex composition and high heterogeneity of real−life plastic waste pose significant challenges to the process. Professor Ma from Peking University, along with collaborators, proposed an orthogonal transformation strategy. They integrated solid−state NMR analysis with catalytic conversion methods. This approach successfully established a highly adaptable route. The route can convert unknown real−life plastic waste into a series of valuable chemicals. The strategy still requires further optimization and validation in its economic feasibility, environmental benefits, industrial applicability and so on. Nevertheless, it offers a complementary new perspective for addressing this complex real−world problem. This strategy holds promise for achieving high−value utilization of carbon and hydrogen resources in real−life plastic waste. It also provides theoretical support for advancing a circular economy in the plastics sector.

化石燃料(包括煤、石油和天然气)不仅是全球主要的能源来源,也为化学品、聚合物等日常生活必需品的生产提供了基础原料。然而,其使用过程中排放的CO2,已成为全球气候变化的主要推动因素,这促使国际社会积极寻求可再生的替代资源。当前,已有明确的路径表明可再生电力可替代化石燃料,但长期来看石油炼厂所生产的运输燃料和化学品仍将不可或缺。为逐步实现碳循环闭环,研究人员提出对炼油过程进行电气化改造,并将原料从化石燃料转向2类来源:一是用于生产碳氢燃料的CO2,二是来自农业和城市废弃物、可用于制造化学品和聚合物的可再生碳资源[1]。实现这一愿景将代表着向可持续发展迈出重要一步。
如今,全球塑料年产量已超过4亿t,其中约90%来源于不可再生的化石原料。数据显示,2015年全球近4%的碳排放来自塑料生产过程。若依当前趋势发展,预计到2050年,全球塑料年产量将攀升至11亿t,消耗全球剩余石油产量的20%,并贡献全年碳排放量的15%[2]。在传统的线性经济模式中,每年约有80%的塑料制品最终被废弃。这类材料往往难以自然降解,持续积聚在填埋场和自然环境中。部分塑料产品所含的微珠以及破碎分解产生的微塑料,进一步加剧了全球污染。由此可见,废塑料若得不到合理处置,不仅意味着碳资源的浪费,还会带来严重的环境与安全风险,亟须建立健全高效回收与处理体系。
塑料回收通常包括4个层次[3]:初级回收、二级回收(机械回收)、焚烧以及化学回收。作为塑料废弃物回收的2条主要路径,物理回收与化学回收各自具备优势与局限性。物理回收适用于品类单一且清洁度较好的废塑料,但其再生产品往往难以达到高价值应用领域的质量要求。相比之下,化学回收能够处理混合型以及受污染的废塑料,通过在分子层面进行解聚与重组,将废塑料转化为原始单体或新型原料,品质可接近石油基原料。然而,现有化学回收技术通常能耗较高、工艺复杂,在经济性与环境效益方面仍存在争议,尚需进一步优化与突破。
目前,全球仅有约10%的塑料废弃物得到回收利用,且主要依靠机械回收方式[4]。这一低回收率不仅源于构成塑料的高聚物化学结构高度稳定,更与其复杂的组成和高度异质性密切相关。常见塑料聚合物包括聚乙烯(PE)、聚丙烯(PP)、聚氯乙烯(PVC)、聚对苯二甲酸乙二醇酯(PET)、聚氨酯(PU)、聚苯乙烯(PS)等。从微观结构来看,即便是单一类型的聚合物,其链结构也往往具有显著的复杂性,体现在分子量分布、拓扑结构、构象、构型及端基结构等多个方面。而当这些聚合物被加工成实际塑料制品时,其结构的复杂性和多样性还会进一步增加。
几乎所有商用塑料都含有增塑剂、填料、颜料和改性剂等添加剂,这些成分一方面赋予塑料加工所需的可操作性,另一方面也提升了最终产品的使用性能。然而,在塑料制品到达使用寿命后,这些添加剂会严重影响废弃物回收。例如,在机械回收中,它们可能作为杂质逐渐累积,降低再生材料的品质;而在化学回收过程中,则可能毒化催化剂,导致反应效率下降,从而影响整体回收效果。
近年来,多组分聚合物体系的应用日益广泛。无论是通过无规共聚、接枝、嵌段、交替共聚等方式合成的共聚物(如丙烯腈−丁二烯−苯乙烯共聚物),还是借助化学或物理手段对现有高分子材料进行剪裁加工所获得的多组分材料(如多层薄膜),均展现出优异的性能组合,显著提升了材料的综合性能或赋予其特殊功能,进而创造了显著的经济效益。然而,多相结构的存在也使这类多组分塑料在废弃后难以高效回收,对资源循环利用提出了新的挑战。
因此,塑料制品在使用后进入废弃物流,不仅常与其他固体废物混合共存,还往往包含多种难以分离的聚合物、添加剂及污染物。这种高度复杂性严重制约了针对单一类型塑料的回收策略的适用性,亟需开发能够有效处理复杂塑料混合物的回收技术。
在此背景下,催化技术为塑料回收提供了新的可能。过去几年,利用催化技术实现塑料化学回收的研究显著增加[59],通过催化反应解聚塑料中的聚合物链,将其转化为有价值的小分子产物。然而,现有的研究多集中于单一组分/类型塑料的回收,开发出能够处理“现实世界”中复杂混合废塑料的方法仍是一项关键挑战。这不仅要求在杂质存在下催化过程保持高稳定性,还需对混合塑料的化学组成有充分的理解。
2025年6月,北京大学马丁教授团队与中国科学院大连化学物理研究所徐舒涛研究员团队合作,提出了一种针对真实塑料废弃物的正交转化策略,借助一系列相互独立的催化反应实现了混合物中各组分的分步转化[10]。该研究选取了8种具有广泛应用背景的塑料类别(PE、PP、PVC、PET、PU、PS,以及聚碳酸酯PC、聚乳酸PLA),研究人员指出,正是这些塑料在分子结构、物理性质及化学反应活性方面存在的显著差异,为这一产物导向策略的实现带来了机会。
研究人员首先采用固态核磁共振(NMR)技术精确鉴定了混合物中的化学基团,进而设计了一个多步流程来将混合物转化为高价值产物。利用各组分特定物理化学性质的差异性,该过程通过溶剂法实现了特定组分的选择性提取——能够针对8种塑料中的1种或多种进行有效分选,进而结合催化方法将分离后的塑料转化为有用化合物。此外,该过程还涉及了无需预先分离即可将混合物中的特定塑料组分/组合直接选择性转化为高附加值产物的方法步骤。例如,利用良溶剂四氢呋喃和不良溶剂正己烷的组合,可将混合溶剂的溶解度和极性等参数调节至仅能溶解PS,其余7种塑料则保持固态。分离出的PS随后经光激活催化反应转化为苯甲酸——一种工业上广泛使用的化合物。之后,研究人员仅使用四氢呋喃从剩余混合物中选择性溶解了另外3种塑料:PU、PC和PVC,并将它们转化为多种有价值的产品。最终,通过对剩余4种塑料依次施加选择性反应,实现了整个混合物的逐级化学回收。
通过由等质量的8种纯塑料(购自商业化学品供应商)组成的模型系统对该方法进行验证后,研究人员进一步将该策略应用于来自日常生活、石化企业等成分未知的实际塑料废弃物。尽管偶尔需根据塑料的具体组成和特性对催化反应条件进行微调,但该方法在这些真实样本中仍表现出良好的可行性和鲁棒性。尽管仍需在材料与能耗、CO2排放、整体工艺效率与可持续性等方面进一步优化,这一方法的内在适应性使其可以与新兴技术融合以提升效率与扩展性。通过对混合物中主要组分的初步识别,灵活调整后续化学过程,从而最大化整体回收效率,或在无需处理时跳过特定步骤,能够显著提升过程的适应性和有效性。
正交转化策略的概念验证确立了其在塑料废物处理技术路径上的可行性,为解决复杂现实问题提供了一条具有差异化和互补性的新思路。例如,在生产者责任延伸制度和资源循环利用政策的推动下,一些大型工业生产企业已自主设立资源循环企业,专门处置生产过程中产生的废弃物并实现内部回用。在此类情形中,机械回收法通常被视为最优选择(图1)。
针对复杂程度较高的消费后废弃物,如生活垃圾,通常包含具有一定循环利用价值的废玻璃、废纺织品、废弃家具、废泡沫和低值废塑料等多种固体废弃物。这类废弃物的回收利用难度较大,借助热解/气化等非/低选择性工艺,结合分选、清洗及杂原子去除等上游处理技术,将其转化为适用于炼油企业现有工艺体系(如催化裂解、催化加氢、费托合成等)的原料,可能是技术成熟度较高的方案(图1)。
而对于特定来源的消费后废弃物,如废弃农膜和废弃纺织品等,正交转化策略展现出显著潜力,有望大幅提升产物价值,提供更具经济效益和环境效益的处理途径(图1)。总之,实现塑料的可持续价值化有赖于跨学科协作,需要整合分析化学、催化、过程工程、数据科学等多领域的专业知识。在实时废物表征、智能分类技术以及动态过程控制等方面的创新,对推动塑料循环利用至关重要。目前,许多关键技术仍处于实验室或中试阶段,其在经济可行性、环境影响与规模化应用方面仍存在待解决的关键问题。相关法规和标准的制定也将驱动回收技术升级和产业链形成,例如垃圾分类等政策的规范实施,是稳定的高值化转化原料供应的有力保障,从而增加塑料垃圾作为可再生碳资源的竞争力。通过有针对性地投资与跨部门协同,这些策略有望为构建未来具有韧性的低碳塑料经济奠定坚实基础。
