    地球早期的岩浆海洋在冷却过程中,会结晶出固态矿物,逐渐形成地幔。其中,布里奇曼石是地幔中最早结晶且含量超过1/2的主要矿物。它如同一个微观的“储水容器”,其“锁水”能力直接决定了有多少水能从岩浆中转入固态地球。以往研究基于相对低温的实验条件,认为布里奇曼石的储水能力有限。
    研究团队利用自主研发的超高压实验模拟装置,将实验温度大幅提升至4100℃左右的极端高温。研究人员发现,矿物的“锁水”能力随温度升高而显著增强。这意味着,在地球最炽热的“岩浆洋”阶段,正在结晶的布里奇曼石反而能够“捕获”并封存远超以往想象的海量水分,颠覆了“深下地幔几乎不含水”的传统认识。
    该研究突破了2大技术挑战:一是在实验室模拟深度超地下660 km的极端环境;二是在不足头发丝直径1/10的“微尘”级实验样品中,精准捕捉含量低至万分之一级别的痕量水信号。
    基于这次研究的新发现,研究团队构建了岩浆海洋结晶模型,模拟结果显示,由于地球早期高温下布里奇曼石的强效“锁水”能力,在岩浆海洋凝固后,下地幔成为整个固体地幔中最大的储水层,其储水量可能是此前模型预估的5~100倍。据估算,早期固体地幔中储存的水量,可能相当于0.08~1个现代全球海洋的总水量。
    研究人员表示,随着时间推移,深部水通过岩浆活动等地质过程被逐渐“泵”回地表,参与形成原始大气和海洋。这股早在46亿年前的星球初期就被封存于地球“骨骼”中的“水之火种”,很可能正是推动地球从岩浆炼狱转变为蓝色宜居星球的关键力量。
